1Tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the role of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) in cirrhotic patients who have hepatic and renal impairment with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(SBP).METHODS:We prospectively studied 120 cirrhotic patients with SBP and 80 cirrhotic patients with sterile ascitic fluid.They included 144 males and 56 females with ages ranging between 34 and 62 years.The diagnosis of cirrhosis was established by clinical and laboratory criteria that did not require histological confirmation.The severity of underlying liver disease was evaluated using Pugh's modification of Child's criteria(Child-Pugh scores).Ascitic fluid was sent to the laboratory for cell count,culture,sensitivity testing,and measurement of chemical elements(i.e.,albumin,glucose).Specimens were inoculated into aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles.Serum and ascitic fluid were also collected in sterile tubes at study entry(before the initiation of antibiotic treatment) and 48 h later.Assays for TNF-α and IL-6 in the serum and ascitic fluid were performed with an immunoenzymometric assay using manufacture's instructions.RESULTS:Cytokine levels in serum and ascitic fluid were significantly higher in the patients with SBP.(plasma TNF-α:135.35 ng/mL ± 11.21 ng/mL vs 92.86 ng/mL ± 17.56 ng/mL,P < 0.001;plasma IL-6:32.30 pg/mL ± 7.07 pg/mL vs 12.11 pg/mL ± 6.53 pg/mL,P < 0.001;ascitic fluid TNF-α:647.54 ± 107.11 ng/mL vs 238.43 ng/mL ± 65.42 ng/mL,P < 0.001);ascitic fluid IL-6:132.84 ng/mL ± 34.13 vs 40.41 ± 12.85 pg/mL,P < 0.001).About 48(40%) cirrhotic patients with SBP developed renal and hepatic impairment and showed significantly higher plasma and ascitic fluid cytokine levels at diagnosis of infection.[(plasma TNF-α:176.58 ± 17.84 vs 135.35 ± 11.21 ng/mL)(P < 0.001) and(IL-6:57.83 ± 7.85 vs 32.30 ± 7.07 pg/mL)(P < 0.001);ascitic fluid TNF-α:958.39 ± 135.72 vs 647.54 ± 107.11 ng/mL,(P < 0.001),ascitic fluid IL-6:654.74 ± 97.43 vs 132.84 ± 34.13 pg/mL,(P < 0.001)].Twenty nine patients(60.4%) with SBP and renal impairment died whereas,only four patients(5.55%) with SBP but without renal impairment died from gastrointestinal hemorrhage(P < 0.0005).CONCLUSION:It appears that TNF-α production may enhance liver cell injury and lead to renal impairment.This correlated well with the poor prognosis and significantly increased mortality associated with SBP in cirrhotic patients.Muhammed AM Suliman Fawzy MH Khalil Salam SA Alkindi Anil V Pathare Ali AA Almadhani Neveen AAI Soliman 2012World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology2012,3,5:39
2Review of surfactant-assisted chemical enhanced oil recovery for carbonate reservoirs: challenges and future perspectives显示文摘A significant fraction of the conventional oil reserves globally is in carbonate formations which contain a substantial amount of residual oil. Since primary and secondary recovery methods fail to yield above 20%–40%of original oil in place from these reserves, the need for enhanced oil recovery(EOR) techniques for incremental oil recovery has become imperative. With the challenges presented by the highly heterogeneous carbonate rocks,evaluation of tertiary-stage recovery techniques including chemical EOR(c EOR) has been a high priority for researchers and oil producers. In this review, the latest developments in the surfactant-based c EOR techniques applied in carbonate formations are discussed, contemplating the future direction of existing methodologies. In connection with this, the characteristics of heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs are outlined. Detailed discussion on surfactant-led oil recovery mechanisms and related processes, such as wettability alteration, interfacial tension reduction, microemulsion phase behavior, surfactant adsorption and mitigation, and foams and their applications is presented. 3Obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetic retinopathy: Beyond hyperglycemia显示文摘Diabetic retinopathy(DR) is the most feared ocular manifestation of diabetes. DR is characterized by progressive retinal damage that may eventually result in blindness. Clinically, this blindness is caused by progressive damage to the retinal microvasculature, which leads to ischemia, retinal swelling, and neovascularization. Retinopathy is associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with DR being the leading cause of new onset blindness in United States adults. Despite this strong association with diabetes, it must be noted that the development of retinopathy lesions is multifactorial and may occur in individuals without an established history of diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a multifactorial condition of central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, fasting hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance. Although several studies examined the individual components observed in the metabolic syndrome in relation to the development of DR, there is conflicting data as to the association of the metabolic syndrome with the development of retinopathy lesions in nondiabetic subjects. This review will summarize the current literature on the evidence of the metabolic syndrome on retinopathy in subjects with and without an established history of diabetes. 4Circulating tumor and cancer stem cells in hepatitis C virusassociated liver disease显示文摘AIM:To assess the role of circulating tumor cells(CTCs)and cancer stem cells(CSCs)in hepatitis C virus(HCV)-associated liver disease.METHODS:Blood and/or tissue samples were obtained from HCV(genotype 4)-associated hepatocellularcarcinoma patients(HCC;n=120),chronic hepatitis C patients(CH;n=30)and 33 normal control subjects(n=33).Serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP),alkaline phosphatase,and alanine and aspartate aminotransferases were measured.Cytokeratin 19(CK19)monoclonal antibody was used to enumerate CTCs,and CD133 and CD90 were used to enumerate CSCs by flow cytometry.The expression levels of the CSCs markers(CD133 and CD90)as well as telomerase,melanoma antigen encoding gene 1(MAGE1)and MAGE3 were assessed by RTPCR and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions.The number of CTCs and/or the expression levels of CK19,CD133,telomerase,MAGE1 and MAGE3 were correlated to the standard clinicopathologic prognostic factors and disease progression.RESULTS:Levels of AFP,alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase were significantly different among the HCC,CH and control groups(P<0.001),whereas alanine aminotransferase differed significantly between patient(HCC and CH)and control groups(P<0.001).At the specified cutoff values determine by flow cytometry,CK19(49.8),CD90(400)and CD133(73)were significantly higher in the blood of HCC patients compared to those in the CH and control groups(P<0.001).On the other hand,CD133 at a 69.5 cutoff was significantly higher in the CH compared to the control group(P≤0.001).Telomerase,MAGE1 and MAGE3RNA were expressed in 55.71%,60.00%and 62.86%of the HCC patients,respectively,but were not detected in patients in the CH or control groups,which were statistically significant(Ps<0.001).The expression levels of telomerase,CD90,MAGE3,CD133 and CK19 were all significantly associated with high tumor grade and advanced stage in HCC patients(all P s<0.05).CONCLUSION:CTC counts and AFP,CK19,telomerase,and MAGE1/MAGE3 expression predict disease progression in patients with HCV,whereas telomerase,MAGE3,CD90,CD133 and CK19 are prognostic mark-Abeer A Bahnassy Abdel-Rahman N Zekri Ahmed El-Bastawisy Amal Fawzy Marwa Shetta Nehal Hussein Dalia Omran Abdallah A S Ahmed Samir S El-Labbody 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,48:9
5Assessment of KL-6 as a tumor marker in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To investigate the clinical significance of KL-6 as a tumor marker of HCC in two different ethnic groups with chronic liver disease consecutively encountered at outpatient clinics.METHODS: Serum KL-6 was measured by the sandwich enzyme immunoassay method using the KL-6 antibody (Ab) as both the capture and tracerAb according to the manufacturer's instructions (Eisai, Tokyo, Japan).Assessment of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and protein induced vitamin K deficiency or absence (PIVKA-Ⅱ) was performed in both groups using commercially available kits.RESULTS: A significantly higher mean serum KL-6(556±467 U/L) was found in HCC in comparison with non-HCC groups either with (391±176 U/L; P<0.001)or without (361±161 U/L; P<0.001) liver cirrhosis (LC).Serum KL-6 level did not correlate with either AFP or PIVKA-Ⅱ serU/Levels. Using receiver operating curve analysis for KL-6 as a predictor for HCC showed that the area under the curve was 0.574 (95%CI = 0.50-0.64)and the KL-6 level that gave the best sensitivity (61%) was found to be 334 U/L but according to the manufacturer's instructions; a cut-off point of 500 U/Lwas used that showed the highest specificity (80%)in comparison with AFP and PIVKA-Ⅱ (78% vs 72%respectively). Combining the values of the three markers improved specificity of AFP for HCC diagnosis from 78%for AFP alone; 93% for AFP plus PIVKA-Ⅱ to 99% for both plus KL-6 value (P<0.001). 6Isolation and characterisation of human gingival margin-derived STRO-1/MACS^+ and MACS^-cell populations显示文摘Recently,gingival margin-derived stem/progenitor cells isolated via STRO-1/magnetic activated cell sorting(MACS) showed remarkable periodontal regenerative potential in vivo.As a second-stage investigation,the present study's aim was to perform in vitro characterisation and comparison of the stem/progenitor cell characteristics of sorted STRO-1-positive(MACS^+) and STRO-1-negative(MACS^-) cell populations from the human free gingival margin.Cells were isolated from the free gingiva using a minimally invasive technique and were magnetically sorted using anti-STRO-1 antibodies.Subsequently,the MACS^+ and MACS^- cell fractions were characterized by flow cytometry for expression of CD14,CD34,CD45,CD73,CD90,CD105,CD146/MUC18 and STRO-1.Colony-forming unit(CFU) and multilineage differentiation potential were assayed for both cell fractions.Mineralisation marker expression was examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR).MACS^+ and MACS- cell fractions showed plastic adherence.MACS^+ cells,in contrast to MACS- cells,showed all of the predefined mesenchymal stem/progenitor cell characteristics and a significantly higher number of CFUs(P<0.01).More than 95%of MACS^+ cells expressed CD105,CD90 and CD73;lacked the haematopoietic markers CD45,CD34 and CD14,and expressed STRO-1 and CD146/MUC18.MACS- cells showed a different surface marker expression profile,with almost no expression of CD14 or STRO-1,and more than 95%of these cells expressed CD73,CD90 and CD146/MUC18,as well as the haematopoietic markers CD34 and CD45 and CD105.MACS^+ cells could be differentiated along osteoblastic,adipocytic and chondroblastic lineages.In contrast,MACS- cells demonstrated slight osteogenic potential.Unstimulated MACS^+ cells showed significantly higher expression of collagen I(P<0.05) and collagen III(P<0.01),whereas MACS^- cells demonstrated higher expression of osteonectin(P<0.05;MannWhitney).The present study is the first to compare gingival MACS^+ and MACS- cell populations demonstrating that MACS^+ cells,in contrast to MACS- cells,harbour stem/progenitor cell characteristics.This study also validates the effectiveness of the STRO-l/MACS^+technique for the isolation of gingival stem/progenitor cells.Human free gingival margin-derived STRO-1/MACS^+ cells are a unique renewable source of multipotent stem/progenitor cells.Karim M Fawzy El-Sayed Sebastian Paris Christian Graetz Neemat Kassem Mohamed Mekhemar Hendrick Ungefroren Fred Fndrich Christof Drfer 2015International Journal of Oral Science2015,7,2:6

8Interplay between micro RNA-17-5p, insulin-like growth factor-Ⅱ through binding protein-3 in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of microR NA on insulinlike growth factor binding protein-3(IGFBP-3) and hence on insulin-like growth factor-Ⅱ(IGF-Ⅱ) bioavailability in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Bioinformatic analysis was performed using microrna.org, DIANA lab and Segal lab softwares. Total RNA was extracted from 23 HCC and 10 healthy liver tissues using mir Vana mi RNA Isolation Kit. microR NA-17-5p(miR-17-5p) expression was mimicked and antagonized in Hu H-7 cell lines using Hi Per Fect Transfection Reagent, then total RNA was extracted using Biozol reagent then reverse transcribed into cD NA followed by quantification of mi R-17-5p and IGFBP-3 expression using Taq Man real-time quantitative PCR. Luciferase reporter assay was performed to validate the binding of miR-17-5p to the 3'UTR of IGFBP-3. Free IGF-Ⅱ protein was measured in transfected Hu H-7 cells using IGF-Ⅱ ELISA kit. RESULTS: Bioinformatic analysis revealed IGFBP-3 as a potential target for miR-17-5p. Screening of miR-17-5p and IGFBP-3 revealed a moderate negative correlation in HCC patients, where mi R-17-5p was extensively underexpressed in HCC tissues(P = 0.0012), while IGFBP-3 showed significant upregulation in the same set of patients(P = 0.0041) compared to healthy donors. Forcing mi R-17-5p expression in Hu H-7 cell lines showed a significant downregulation of IGFBP-3 mR NA expression(P = 0.0267) and a significant increase in free IGF-Ⅱ protein(P = 0.0339) compared to mock untransfected cells using unpaired t-test. 9Exploitation of Gene Expression and Cancer Biomarkers in Paving the Path to Era of Personalized Medicine显示文摘Cancer therapy agents have been used extensively as cytotoxic drugs against tissue or organ of a specific type of cancer. With the better understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis and cellular events during cancer progression and metastasis, it is now possible to use targeted therapy for these molecular events. Targeted therapy is able to identify cancer patients with dissimilar genetic defects at cellular level for the same cancer type and consequently requires individualized approach for treatment. Cancer therapy begins to shift steadily from the traditional approach of ‘‘one regimen for all patients' to a more individualized approach, through which each patient will be treated specifically according to their specific genetic defects. Personalized medicine accordingly requires identification of indicators or markers that guide in the decision making of such therapy to the chosen patients for more effective therapy. Cancer biomarkers are frequently used in clinical practice for diagnosis and prognosis, as well as identification of responsive patients and prediction of treatment response of cancer patient. The rapid breakthrough and development of microarray and sequencing technologies is probably the main tool for paving the way toward ‘‘individualized biomarker-driven cancer therapy' or ‘‘personalized medicine'. 10A survey on herbal management of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘In this review we outline the different mechanisms mediating hepatocarcinogenesis. We also discuss possible targets of bioactive herbal agents at different stages of hepatocarcinogenesis and highlight their role at each individual stage. We gathered information on the most common herbal prescriptions and extracts thought to be useful in prevention or sensitization for chemotherapy in management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The value of this topic may seem questionable compared to the promise offered for HCC management by chemotherapy and radiation. However, we would recommend the use of herbal preparations not as alternatives to common chemo /and or radiotherapy, but rather for prevention among atrisk individuals, given that drug/herb interactions are still in need of extensive clarification. The bioactive constituents of various herbs seem to be promising targets for isolation, cancer activity screening and clinical evaluation. 11Occurrence and ecotoxicological risk assessment of pesticides in sediments of the Rosetta branch,Nile River, Egypt显示文摘This study aimed to(1) monitor the occurrence and spatiotemporal variations of 100 pesticides in sediments collected monthly from July 2018 to June 2019 from sampling sites in El-Rahawy, Sabal, and Tala, along the Rosetta branch of the Nile River, Egypt, and(2) perform an ecological risk assessment for aquatic organisms upon exposure to the detected sediment pesticides based on the risk quotient(RQ) method. Out of the 100 pesticides monitored, 16 pesticides belonging to seven chemical families were detected, and 55% of the sediment samples were contaminated with one or more pesticide residues. The mean concentration(mg/kg dry weight(dw)) and detection frequency(%) of the four most frequently detected pesticides in the sediment samples were as follows: chlorpyrifos(0.18 mg/kg dw and 34%), p,p-DDE(0.018 mg/kg dw and 30%), cypermethrin(0.03 mg/kg dw and 14%), and deltamethrin(0.026 mg/kg dw and 13%). The spatial distribution exhibited that El-Rahawy had the highest pesticide load(2.86 mg/kg dw) among the studied sites, whereas the temporal variations revealed that the highest total pesticide concentrations were detected in winter season(1.73 mg/kg dw). 12N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, iso-amyl-2-cyanoacrylate and hypertonic glucose with 72% chromated glycerin in gastric varices显示文摘AIM: To compare n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, iso-amyl-2-cyanoacrylate and a mixture of 72% chromated glycerin with hypertonic glucose solution in management of gastric varices. METHODS: Ninety patients with gastric varices presented to Endoscopy Unit of Ain Shams University Hospital were included. They were randomly allocated into three groups; each group included 30 patients treated with intravariceal sclerosant injections in biweekly sessions till complete obturation of gastric varices; Group I(n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate; Histoacryl), Group II(iso-amyl-2-cyanoacrylate; Amcrylate) and Group III(mixture of 72% chromated glycerin; Scleremo with glucose solution 25%). All the procedures were performed electively without active bleeding. Recruited patients were followed up for 3 mo. RESULTS: 26% of Scleremo group had bleeding during puncture vs 3.3% in each of the other two groups with significant difference,(P < 0.05). None of Scleremo group had needle obstruction vs 13.3% in each of the other two groups with no significant difference,(P > 0.05). Rebleeding occurred in 13.3% of Histoacryl and Amcrylate groups vs 0% in Scleremo group with no significant difference. The in hospital mortality was 6.6% in both Histoacryl and Amcrylate groups, while it was 0% in Scleremo group with no significant difference. In the first and second sessions, the amount of Scleremo needed for obturation was significantly high, while the amount of Histoacryl was significantly low. Scleremo was the less costly of the two treatments. 13Maternal vitamin D level and vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism as a risk factor for congenital heart diseases in offspring;An Egyptian case-control study显示文摘Vitamin D&vitamin D receptor(VDR)signaling play a very crucial role in early embryonic heart development.We construct this case-control study to investigate the association between maternal serum vitamin D level&VDR gene Fok1 polymorphism and risk of congenital heart defects(CHD)in offspring.Fifty mothers who had term neonates with CHD were considered as cases.Fifty age-comparable healthy mothers who had neonates without CHD were contemplated as controls.Maternal serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D]level was tested using ELISA.Maternal VDR gene Fok1 polymorphism was analyzed using PCR-based RFLP-assay.There was a significant decrease in maternal vitamin D level(P=0.002)and a significant increase in vitamin D deficient status(P=0.007)among cases when compared to controls.VDR gene Fok1 genotypes distribution frequency were in accordance with Hardy Weinberg equilibrium(HW)among controls.A significant increase in VDR gene Fok1 F/f&f/f genotypes and f allele were observed in cases compared to controls with estimated odds ratio(95%confidence interval)&P-value of 3(1e8)&P=0.006,11(1e97)&P=0.01 and 3(2e6)&P=0.001 respectively.There was a significant decrease in maternal vitamin D level in neonates with cyanotic CHD(P=0.000)compared to those with a cyanotic CHD while there was no significant difference in VDR Fok1 genotype(P=0.18)&allele(P=0.05)distribution between two groups.We concluded that maternal vitamin D deficiency and VDR gene Fok1 F/f,f/f genotype and f allele were associated with increased risk of CHD in offspring.Wesam A.Mokhtar Amal Fawzy Reem M.Allam Rania M.Amer Mona S.Hamed 2019Genes & Diseases2019,6,2:2

15Low-density lipoprotein receptor genetic polymorphism in chronic hepatitis C virus Egyptian patients affects treatment response显示文摘AIM: To correlate a genetic polymorphism of the low-density lipoprotein(LDL) receptor with antiviral responses in Egyptian chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV) patients.METHODS: Our study included 657 HCV-infected patients with genotype 4 who received interferonbased combination therapy. Patients were divided into two groups based on their response to therapy: 356 were responders, and 301 were non-responders. Patients were compared to 160 healthy controls. All patients and controls underwent a thorough physical examination, measurement of body mass index(BMI) and the following laboratory tests: serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, prothrombin time, prothrombin concentration, INR, complete blood count, serum creatinine, fasting blood sugar, HCV antibody, and hepatitis B surface antigen. All HCV patients were further subjected to the following laboratory tests: HCV-RNA using quantitative polymerase chain reaction(PCR), antinuclear antibodies, thyroid-stimulating hormone, an LDL receptor(LDLR) genotype study of LDLR exon8 c.1171G>A and exon-10 c.1413G>A using real-time PCR-based assays, abdominal ultrasonography, ultrasonographic-guided liver biopsy, and histopathological examination of liver biopsies. Correlations of LDL receptor polymorphisms with HAI, METAVIR score, presence of steatosis, and BMI were performed in all cases.RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in response rates between the different types of interferon used or LDLR exon10 c.1413G>A. However, there was a significant difference in the frequency of the LDL receptor exon8 c.1171G>A genotype between cases(AA: 25.9%, GA: 22.2%, GG: 51.9%) and controls(AA: 3.8%, GA: 53.1% and GG: 43.1%)(P < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in the frequency of the LDLR exon 8C:1171 G>A polymorphism between responders(AA: 3.6%, GA: 15.2%, GG: 81.2%) and nonresponders(AA: 52.2%, GA: 30.6%, GG: 17.2%)(P < 0.001). The G allele of LDL receptor exon8 c.1171G>A predominated in cases and controls over the A allele, and a statistically significant association with response to interferon was observed. The frequency of the LDLR exon8 c.1171G>A allele in non-responders was: A: 67.4% and G: 32.6 vs A: 11.2% and G: 88.8% in responders(P < 0.001). Therefore, carriers of the A allele exhibited a 16.4 times greater risk for nonresponse. There was a significant association between LDL receptors exon8 c.1171G>A and HAI(P < 0.011). There was a significant association between LDL receptors exon8 c.1171G>A and BMI. The mean BMI level was highest in patients carrying the AA genotype(28.7 ± 4.7 kg/m2) followed by the GA genotype(28.1 ± 4.8 kg/m2). The lowest BMI was the GG genotype(26.6 ± 4.3 kg/m2)(P < 0.001). 16Impact of dietary oils and fats on lipid peroxidation in liver and blood of albino rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the effects of different dietary fat and oils(differing in their degree of saturation and unsaturation)on lipid peroxidation in liver and blood of rats.Methods:The study was conducted on SO albino rats that were randomly divided into 5 groups of 10 animals.The groups were fed on dietary butter(Group I),margarine(Croup II),olive oil(Group III),sunflower oil(Group IV)and com oil(Group V)for 7 weeks.After 12 h of diet removal,livers were excised and blood was collected to measure malondialdehyde(MDA)levels in the supernatant of liver homogenate and in blood.Blood superoxide dismutase activity(SOD),glutathione peroxidase activity(GPx),serum vitamin E and total antioxidant capacity(TAC)levels were also measured to determine the effects of fats and oils on lipid peroxidation.Results:The results indicated that no significant differences were observed in SOD activity,vitamin E and TAC levels between the five groups.However,there was significant decrease of GPx activity in groups IV and V when compared with otlier groups.The results indicated that feeding corn oil caused significant increases in liver and blood MDA levels as compared with other oils and fats.There were positive correlations between SOD and GPx,vitamin E and TAC as well as between GPx and TAC(r:0.743;P<0.001)and between blood MDA and liver MDA(r:0.897;P<0.00l).The results showed also negative correlations between blood MDA on one hand and SOD,GPx,vitamin E and TAC on the other hand.Conclusions:The results demonstrated that feeding oils rich in polyunsaturated fatly acids(PUFA)increases lipid peroxidation significantly and may raise the susceptibility of tissues to free radical oxidative damage.Mohammad El-Sayed Yassin El-Sayed Haggag Rafaat Mohamed Elsanhoty Mohamed Fawzy Ramadan 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,1:2
17Effects of Mesopotamian Marsh (Iraq) desiccation on the cultural knowledge and livelihood of Marsh Arab women显示文摘In this study,we evaluate ecological and cultural resiliency in response to desertification of the Mesopotamian Marshes of Southern Iraq.Our research illustrates that the desiccation of the marshes has caused a drastic change in how Marsh Arab women interact with their environment;specifically,in comparison to the predesiccation period,women’s roles are increasingly limited to domestic rather than marsh-dependent activities.With the exception of raising water buffalo and limited horticulture activities,most families today have little opportunity to utilize women’s ability to generate income by applying their traditional ecological knowledge and skills.Furthermore,these women are no longer transmitting their marsh-specific knowledge and skills to the next generation,and these valuable and ancient cultural memories are being lost.Upstream dam construction,drought,and regional climate change is depriving Marsh Arab communities of marsh eco-system services such as potable water,water buffalo forage,fish yields,and reed production.In marsh areas,where enough water remains to sustain ecosystem services(such as in Chibayish and the Iraq Marshlands Na-tional Park),cultural knowledge has been retained and passed on to the next generations.We recommend that programs be implemented to preserve these traditional skills,to develop a market for handicrafts to support women and their families,and to support cultural knowledge.Otherwise,with the passing of the older genera-tion,these remnants of ancient Sumerian knowledge systems and traditional ways of life will soon be forgotten.Nadia Al-Mudaffar Fawzi Kelly P.Goodwin Bayan A.Mahdi Michelle L.Stevens 2016Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2016,2,3:2
