| 3 | Comparing the Diagnostic Criteria for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus of World Health Organization 2013 with 1999 in Chinese Population显示文摘INTRODUCTION Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was earlier defined as 'hyperglycemia first recognized during pregnancy' and has more recently been described by American Diabetes Association (ADA) (2012) as diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy that is not clearly overt diabetes.[1] The hyperglycemia and adverse pregnancy outcomes study (HAPO) demonstrated that the risk of adverse maternal,fetal,and neonatal outcomes continuously increase as a function of maternal glycemia at 24-28 weeks,even within ranges previously considered normal for pregnancy.[2] After reviewing the results of the HAPO study,many international diabetes study groups,including the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups and ADA have adopted the 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 24-28 weeks as a screening and diagnostic test and defined new cut-off values for GDM diagnosis.The Ministry of Health of China published the criteria for GDM,that is the same as the ADA criteria on July 1,2011.World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the 75 g OGTT with different cut-offvalues as a diagnostic test since 1999,changed its recommendation on 2013.In Hongkong and Yunnan province in China,most hospital adopted the WHO 1999 criteria,nevertheless,there is no evidence of multicenter and large sample to show that the GDM population within the same ethnic group diagnosed by the new WHO criteria matches those diagnosed by the old one and consistency between the two criteria has not been reported.Thus,we conducted this study to analyze the two criteria in Chinese pregnant women. | Weiwei Zhu Huixia Yang Yumei Wei Zilian Wang Xuelan Li Hairong Wu Nan Li Meihua Zhang Xinghui Liu Hua Zhang Yunhui Wang Jianmin Niu Yujie Gan Liruo Zhong Yunfeng Wang Anil Kapur | 2015 | Chinese Medical Journal2015,,1: | 42 |

| 5 | Puerarin protects brain tissue against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by inhibiting the inflammatory response显示文摘Puerarin, a traditional Chinese medicine, exerts a powerful neuroprotective effect in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, but its mechanism is unknown. Here, we established rat models of middle cerebral artery ischemia/reperfusion injury using the suture method. Puerarin(100 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally 30 minutes before middle cerebral artery occlusion and 8 hours after reperfusion. Twenty-four hours after reperfusion, we found that puerarin significantly improved neurological deficit, reduced infarct size and brain water content, and notably diminished the expression of Toll-like receptor-4, myeloid differentiation factor 88, nuclear factor kappa B and tumor necrosis factor-α in the ischemic region. | 6 | A new strategy for integrated urban water management in China:Sponge city显示文摘Urban water-related problems associated with rapid urbanization, including waterlogging, water pollution, the ecological degradation of water, and water shortages, have caused global concerns in recent years. In 2013, in order to mitigate increasingly severe urban water-related problems, China set forth a new strategy for integrated urban water management(IUWM) called the 'Sponge City'. This is the first holistic IUWM strategy implemented in a developing country that is still undergoing rapid urbanization, and holds promise for application in other developing countries. This paper aims to comprehensively summarize the sponge city. First, this paper reviews prior studies and policies on urban water management in China as important background for the sponge city proposal. Then, the connotations, goals, and features of the sponge city are summarized and discussed.Finally, the challenges, research needs, and development directions pertinent to the sponge city are discussed based on investigations and studies conducted by the authors. The sponge city in China has a short history—given this, there are many issues that should be examined with regard to the stepwise implementation of the Sponge City Programme(SCP). | 7 | Sonodynamic therapy(SDT): a novel strategy for cancer nanotheranostics显示文摘Sonodynamic therapy(SDT) is a promising non-invasive therapeutic modality. Compared to photo-inspired therapy, SDT provides many opportunities and benefits, including deeper tissue penetration, high precision, less side effects, and good patient compliance. Thanks to the facile engineerable nature of nanotechnology, nanoparticles-based sonosensitizers exhibit predominant advantages, such as increased SDT efficacy, binding avidity, and targeting specificity. This review aims to summarize the possible mechanisms of SDT, which can be expected to provide the theoretical basis for SDT development in the future. We also extensively discuss nanoparticle-assisted sonosensitizers to enhance the outcome of SDT. | 8 | Effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus on the growth performance and intestinal health of broilers challenged with Clostridium perfringens显示文摘Background: Clostridium perfringens is the main etiological agent of necrotic enteritis. Lactobacil i show beneficial effects on intestinal health in infectious disease, but the protective functions of lactobacil i in C. perfringens-infected chickens are scarcely described. This study examined the effects of Lactobacil us acidophilus(L. acidophilus) on the growth performance and intestinal health of broiler chickens chal enged with Clostridium perfringens(C. perfringens) over a 28-day period. Using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, a total of 308 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chicks were included to investigate the effects of Lactobacil us acidophilus(L. acidophilus) on the growth performance and intestinal health of broiler chickens chal enged with Clostridium perfringens(C. perfringens) during a 28-day trial.Results: During infection(d 14–21), C. perfringens challenge decreased the average daily gain(P < 0.05), and increased feed conversion ratio and the mortality rate(P < 0.05). However, dietary supplementation with L. acidophilus increased the body weight of C. perfringens-infected broilers on d 21(P < 0.05), and tended to decrease the mortality(P = 0.061).C. perfringens challenge decreased the villus height(P < 0.05), the ratio of villus height to crypt depth(P < 0.05) and OCLN(occludin) m RNA expression(P < 0.05), and increased the pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the spleen and jejunum, the intestinal populations of C. perfringens and Escherichia(P < 0.05), and the serum content of endotoxin(P < 0.05), regardless of L. acidophilus supplementation. | 11 | Crust and upper mantle structure of the Ailao Shan-Red River fault zone and adjacent regions显示文摘Using arrival data of the body waves recorded by seismic stations, we reconstructed the velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau and the northwestern continental margin of the South China Sea through a travel time tomography technique. The result revealed the apparent tectonic variation along the Ailao Shan-Red River fault zone and its adjacent regions. High velocities are observed in the upper and middle crust beneath the Ailao Shan-Red River fault zone and they reflect the character of the fast uplifting and cooling of the metamorphic belt after the ductile shearing of the fault zone, while low velocities in the lower crust and near the Moho imply a relatively active crust-mantle boundary beneath the fault zone. On the west of the fault zone, the large-scale low velocities in the uppermost mantle beneath western Yunnan prove the influence of the mantle heat flow on volcano, hot spring and magma activities, however, the upper mantle on the east of the fault zone shows a relatively stable structure similar to the Yangtze block. | 14 | In vitro antibacterial activity of thymol and carvacrol and their effects on broiler chickens challenged with Clostridium perfringens显示文摘Background:In the post-antibiotic era,essential oils(EO) are promising alternatives to growth-promoting antibiotics.The aim of the present study was to investigate the antibacterial activities of an EO product and its components thymol and carvacrol in vitro,and the efficacy of EO to control Clostridium perfringens challenge in broiler chickens.Results:The in vitro minimum inhibitory concentration assay showed strong antibacterial activity of the EO product,thymol,and carvacrol against pathogenic Escherichia coli,C.perfringens,and Salmonella strains,and weak activity towards beneficial Lactobacillus strains.Besides,an additive effect was observed between thymol and carvacrol.The in vivo study was carried out with 448 male broiler chicks following a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement to test the effects of EO supplementation(0,60,120,or 240 mg/kg EO in wheat-based diet),pathogen challenge(with or without oral gavage of C perfringens from day 14 to day 20) and their interactions.Each treatment consisted of eight replicate pens(seven birds/pen).The challenge led to macroscopic gut lesions,and resulted in a significant increase in ileal populations of C.perfringens and Escherichia subgroup(P< 0.05) on day 21.Dietary EO supplementation did not influence C perfringens numbers,but linearly alleviated intestinal lesions on day 21 and 28(P=0.010 and 0.036,respectively),and decreased Escherichia populations in ileum with increased EO dosages(P=0.027 and 0.071 for day 21 and 28,respectively).For caecum,EO quadratically influenced Lactobacillus populations on day 21(p=0.002),and linearly decreased the numbers of total bacteria and Escherichia on day 28(P=0.026 and 0.060,respectively).Mean thymol and carvacrol concentrations in the small intestine were 0.21 and 0.20 μg/g in intestinal digesta(wet weight),respectively,for birds fed 60 mg/kg EO,and 0.80 and 0.71 μg/g,respectively,for birds fed 240 mg/kg EO.Conclusions:These results indicated that dietary EO supplementation could affect intestinal microbiota and alleviate intestinal lesions in broilers,which may contribute in controlling C.perfringens infection in broiler chickens. | Encun Du Liping Gan Zhui Li Weiwei Wang Dan Liu Yuming Guo | 2016 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2016,7,1: | 14 |
| 15 | Characteristics of Settings and Etiologic Agents of Foodborne Disease Outbreaks—China,2020显示文摘Introduction:Foodborne diseases are a growing public health problem and have caused a large burden of disease in China.This study analyzed epidemiological characteristics of foodborne diseases in China in 2020 to provide a scientific basis for prevention and control measures.Methods:Data were collected from 30 of 31 provincial-level administrative divisions(PLADs)in the mainland of China,excluding Xizang(Tibet)Autonomous Region,via the National Foodborne Disease Outbreaks Surveillance System・The number and proportion of outbreaks,illnesses,hospitalizations,deaths by setting,pathogen-food category pairs and etiology were calculated.Results:In 2020,7,073 foodborne disease outbreaks were reported,resulting in 37,454 illnesses and 143 deaths.Among the identified pathogens,microbial pathogens were the most common confirmed etiology,accounting for 41.7%of illnesses.Poisonous mushrooms caused the largest proportion of outbreaks(58.0%)and deaths(57.6%).For venues where foodborne disease outbreaks occur,household had the highest number of outbreaks(4,140)and deaths(128),and catering service locations caused the largest proportion of illnesses(59.9%).Outbreaks occurring between June and September accounted for 62.8%of total outbreaks.Conclusions:Foodborne disease outbreaks mainly occurred in households・Microbial pathogens remained the top cause of outbreak-associated illnesses.Poisonous mushrooms were ranked the top cause of deaths in private homes in China.The supervision and management of food safety and health education should be strengthened to reduce the burden of foodborne diseases・Publicity should be increased to reduce the incidence of mushroom poisonings in families,and supervision and management of food should be strengthened to reduce microbial contamination. | Hongqiu Li Weiwei Li Yue Dai Yuyan Jiang Junhua Liang Santao Wang Maoqiang Zhuang Zheng Huang Lizi Xu Bo Xue Jikai Liu Haihong Han Sara M.Pires Ping Fu Yunchang Guo | 2021 | China CDC weekly2021,3,42: | 14 |

| 18 | Coordinated Transcriptional Regulation by the UVB Photoreceptor and Multiple Transcription Factors for Plant UV-B Responses显示文摘Non-damaging ultraviolet B(UV-B)light promotes photomorphogenic development and stress acclimation through UV-B-specific signal transduction in Arabidopsis.UV-B irradiation induces monomerization and nuclear translocation of the UV-B photoreceptor UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8(UVR8).However,it is not clear how the nuclear localization of UVR8 leads to changes in global gene expression.Here,we reveal that nuclear UVR8 governs UV-B-responsive transcriptional networks in concert with several previously known transcription factors,including ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5(HY5)and PHYTOCHROME INTERACTING FACTOR 4(PIF4).Based on the transcriptomic analysis,we identify MYB13 as a novel positive regulator in UV-B-induced cotyledon expansion and stress acclimation.MYB13 is UV-B inducible and is predominantly expressed in the cotyledons.Our results demonstrate that MYB13 protein functions as a transcription factor to regulate the expression of genes involved in auxin response and flavonoid biosynthesis through direct binding with their promoters.In addition,photoactivated UVR8 interacts with MYB13 in a UV-B-dependent manner and differentially modulates the affinity of MYB13 with its targets.Taken together,our results elucidate the cooperative function of the UV-B photoreceptor UVR8 with various transcription factors in the nucleus to orchestrate the expression of specific sets of downstream genes and,ultimately,mediate plant responses to UV-B light. | Chongzhen Qian Zhiren Chen Qing Liu Weiwei Mao Yanling Chen Wei Tian Yan Liu Jiupan Han Xinhao Ouyang Xi Huang | 2020 | Molecular Plant2020,13,5: | 13 |

| 20 | Rapid detection of multiple class pharmaceuticals in both municipal wastewater and sludge with ultra high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry显示文摘This work described the development,optimization and validation of an analytical method for rapid detection of multiple-class pharmaceuticals in both municipal wastewater and sludge samples based on ultrasonic solvent extraction,solid-phase extraction,and ultra high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry quantification.The results indicated that the developed method could effectively extract all the target pharmaceuticals(25)in a single process and analyze them within 24 min.The recoveries of the target pharmaceuticals were in the range of 69%–131%for wastewater and 54%–130%for sludge at different spiked concentration levels.The method quantification limits in wastewater and sludge ranged from 0.02 to 0.73 ng/L and from 0.02 to 1.00μg/kg,respectively.Subsequently,this method was validated and applied for residual pharmaceutical analysis in a wastewater treatment plant located in Beijing,China.All the target pharmaceuticals were detected in the influent samples with concentrations varying from0.09 ng/L(tiamulin)to 15.24μg/L(caffeine);meanwhile,up to 23 pharmaceuticals were detected in sludge samples with concentrations varying from 60 ng/kg(sulfamethizole)to8.55 mg/kg(ofloxacin).The developed method demonstrated its selectivity,sensitivity,and reliability for detecting multiple-class pharmaceuticals in complex matrices such as municipal wastewater and sludge. | Xiangjuan Yuan Zhimin Qiang Weiwei Ben Bing Zhu Junxin Liu | 2014 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2014,26,9: | 12 |
