Listening to Turkish classical music decreases patients’anxiety, pain, dissatisfaction and the dose of sedative and analgesic drugs during colonoscopy:A prospective randomized controlled trial显示文摘AIM: To determine whether listening to music decreases the requirement for dosages of sedative drugs, patients’ anxiety, pain and dissatisfaction feelings during colonoscopy and makes the procedure more comfortable and acceptable. METHODS: Patients undergoing elective colonoscopy between October 2005 and February 2006 were randomized into either listening to music (Group 1, n = 30) or not listening to music (Group 2, n = 30). Anxiolytic and analgesic drugs (intravenous midazolam and meperidine) were given according to the patients’ demand. Administered medications were monitored. We determined their levels of anxiety using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Test form. Patients’ satisfaction, pain, and willingness to undergo a repeated procedure were self-assessed using a visual analog scale.RESULTS: The mean dose of sedative and analgesic drugs used in group 1 (midazolam: 2.1 ± 1.4, meperidine: 18.1 ± 11.7) was smaller than group 2 (midazolam: 2.4 ± 1.0, meperidine: 20.6 ± 11.5), but without a significant difference (P > 0.05). The mean anxiety level in group 1 was lower than group 2 (36.7 ± 2.2 vs 251.0 ± 1.9, P < 0.001). The mean satisfaction score was higher in group 1 compared to group 2 (87.8 ± 3.1 vs 58.1 ± 3.4, P < 0.001). The mean pain score in group 1 was lower than group 2 (74.1 ± 4.7 vs 39.0 ± 3.9, P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Listening to music during colonoscopy helps reduce the dose of sedative medications, as well as patients’ anxiety, pain, dissatisfaction during the procedure. Therefore, we believe that listening to music can play an adjunctive role to sedation in colonoscopy. It is a simple, inexpensive way to improve patients’ comfort during the procedure.Nimet Ovayolu Ozlem Ucan Seda Pehlivan Yavuz Pehlivan Hakan Buyukhatipoglu M Cemil Savas Murat T Gulsen 2006World Journal of Gastroenterology2006,12,46:10
Leptin levels in the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant ascites显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the role of leptin levels in the differential diagnosis of ascites. METHODS: Ascitic leptin, TNFα and serum leptin levels were measured in 77 patients with ascites (35 with malignancies, 30 cirrhosis and 12 tuberculosis). Control serum samples were obtained from 20 healthy subjects. Leptin and TNFα levels were measured by ELISA. Body mass index (BMI) and percentage of body fat (BFM) by skin fold measurement were calculated for all patients and control groups. Peritoneal biopsy, ascites cytology and cultures or biochemical values were used for the diagnosis of patients. RESULTS: In patients with malignancies, the mean serum and ascites leptin levels and their ratios were significantly decreased compared to the other patient groups and controls. In tuberculosis peritonitis, ascitic fluid TNFα levels were significantly higher than malignant ascites and cirrhotic sterile ascites. BMI and BFM values did not distinguish between patients and controls. CONCLUSION: In patients with malignant ascites, levels of leptin and TNFα were significantly lower than in patients with tuberculous ascites.Mehmet Buyukberber Mehmet Koruk M Cemil Savas Murat T Gulsen Yavuz Pehlivan Rukiye Deveci Alper Sevinc Serdar Gergerlioglu 2007World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,3:7
Therapeutic effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester on cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the therapeutic role of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) in a rat model of ceruleaninduced acute pancreatitis (AP).METHODS: Seventy male Wistar albino rats were divided into seven groups. Acute edematous pancreatitis was induced by subcutaneous cerulein injection (20 μg/kg) four times at 1-h intervals. CAPE (30 mg/kg) was given by subcutaneous injection at the beginning (CAPE 1 group) and 12 h after the last cerulein injection (CAPE 2 group). Serum amylase, lipase, white blood cell count, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels were measured, and pancreatic histopathology was assessed. RESULTS: In the AP group, amylase and lipase levels were found to be elevated and the histopathological evaluation showed massive edema and inflammation of the pancreas, with less fatty necrosis when compared with sham and control groups. Amylase and lipase levels and edema formation decreased signif icantly in the CAPE therapy groups (P < 0001); especially in the CAPE 2 group, edema was improved nearly completely (P = 0001). Inflammation and fatty necrosis were partially recovered by CAPE treatment. The pathologicalresults and amylase level in the placebo groups were similar to those in the AP group. White blood cell count and TNF-α concentration was nearly the same in the CAPE and placebo groups.CONCLUSION: CAPE may be useful agent in treatment of AP but more experimental and clinical studies are needed to support our observation of benef icial effects of CAPE before clinical usage of this agent.Mehmet Buyukberber M Cemil Savas Cahit Bagci Mehmet Koruk Murat T Gulsen Ediz Tutar Tugba Bilgic Nurdan  Ceylan 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,41:4
Treatment with NADPH oxidase inhibitor apocynin alleviates diabetic neuropathic pain in rats显示文摘Increased reactive oxygen species by the activation of NADPH oxidase(NOX) contributes to the development of diabetic complications.Apocynin,a NOX inhibitor, increases sciatic nerve conductance and blood flow in diabetic rats.We investigated potential protective effect of apocynin in rat diabetic neuropathy and its precise mechanism of action at molecular level.Rat models of streptozotocin-induced diabetes were treated with apocynin(30 and 100 mg/kg per day, intragastrically) for 4 weeks.Mechanical hyperalgesia and allodynia were determined weekly using analgesimeter and dynamic plantar aesthesiometer.Western blot analysis and histochemistry/immunohistochemistry were performed in the lumbar spinal cord and sciatic nerve respectively.Streptozotocin injection reduced pain threshold in analgesimeter, but not in aesthesiometer.Apocynin treatment increased pain threshold dose-dependently.Western blot analysis showed an increase in catalase and NOX-p47 phox protein expression in the spinal cord. However, protein expressions of neuronal and inducible nitric oxide synthase(n NOS,i NOS),superoxide dismutase, glutathion peroxidase, nitrotyrosine, tumor necrosis factor-α,interleukin-6,interleukin-1β,aldose reductase,cyclooxygenase-2 or MAC-1(marker for increased microgliosis) in the spinal cord remained unchanged.Western blot analysis results also demonstrated that apocynin decreased NOX-p47 phox expression at both doses and catalase expression at 100 mg/kg per day.Histochemistry of diabetic sciatic nerve revealed marked degeneration.n NOS and i NOS immunoreactivities were increased, while S-100 immunoreactivity(Schwann cell marker) was decreased in sciatic nerve.Apocynin treatment reversed these changes dose-dependently.In conclusion, decreased pain threshold of diabetic rats was accompanied by increased NOX and catalase expression in the spinal cord and increased degeneration in the sciatic nerve characterized by increased NOS expression and Schwann cell loss.Apocynin treatment attenuates neuropathic pain by decelerating the increased oxidative stress-mediated pathogenesis in diabetic rats.Murat Olukman Aytül onal Fatma Gül celenk Yigit Uyankgil Türker cavusoglu Neslihan Düzenli Sibel ülker 2018Neural Regeneration Research2018,13,9:4
Peroxynitrite induced decrease in Na^+, K^+-ATPase activity is restored by taurine显示文摘AIM: Peroxynitrite (ONOO-) is a powerful oxidant shown to damage membranes. In the present study, the effect of taurine on changes of liver plasma membrane Na+, K+-ATPase induced by ONOO- was investigated. METHODS: Liver plasma membrane was exposed toONOO-with or without taurine. Na+, K+-ATPase activity and lipid peroxidation as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were measured.RESULTS: Different concentrations of ONOO- (100, 200,500, and 1 000 μmol/L) were found to decrease liver plasma membrane Na+, K+-ATPase activity significantly. The depletion of enzyme activity was not concentration dependent. Effects of different concentrations of taurine on liver plasma membrane Na+, K+-ATPase activity were also measured. Taurine did not cause any increase in enzyme activity. When plasma membranes were treated with 200 μmol/L ONOO- with different concentrations of taurine, a restoring effect of taurine on enzyme activity was observed. TBARS levels were also measured and taurine was found to decrease the elevated values. CONCLUSION: Taurine is observed to act as an antioxidant of ONOO-to decrease lipid peroxidation and thus affect liver plasma membrane Na+, K+-ATPase by restoring its activity.Necla Kocak-Toker Murat Giris Feti Tülübas Müjdat Uysal Gülcin Aykac-Toker 2005World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,23:2
