1Silicon photonic platforms for mid-infrared applications [Invited]显示文摘Silicon photonic integrated circuits for telecommunication and data centers have been well studied in the past decade, and now most related efforts have been progressing toward commercialization. Scaling up the silicon-oninsulator(SOI)-based device dimensions in order to extend the operation wavelength to the short mid-infrared(MIR) range(2–4 μm) is attracting research interest, owing to the host of potential applications in lab-on-chip sensors, free space communications, and much more. Other material systems and technology platforms, including silicon-on-silicon nitride, germanium-on-silicon, germanium-on-SOI, germanium-on-silicon nitride, sapphireon-silicon, Si Ge alloy-on-silicon, and aluminum nitride-on-insulator are explored as well in order to realize low-loss waveguide devices for different MIR wavelengths. In this paper, we will comprehensively review silicon photonics for MIR applications, with regard to the state-of-the-art achievements from various device demonstrations in different material platforms by various groups. We will then introduce in detail of our institute's research and development efforts on the MIR photonic platforms as one case study. Meanwhile, we will discuss the integration schemes along with remaining challenges in devices(e.g., light source) and integration. A few application-oriented examples will be examined to illustrate the issues needing a critical solution toward the final production path(e.g., gas sensors). 2Genomic-wide analysis of lymphatic metastasis-associated genes in human hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To identify the genes related to lymph node metastasis in human hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),32 HCC patients with or without lymph node metastasis were investigated by high-throughput microarray comprising 886 genes.METHODS:The samples of cancerous and non-cancerous paired tissue were taken from 32 patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy with lymph node dissection.Total RNA was extracted from the cells obtained by means of laser microdissection(LCM) and was amplified by the T7-based amplification system.Then,the amplifi ed samples were applied in the cDNA microarray comprising of 886 genes.RESULTS:The results demonstrated that 25 up-regulated genes such as cell membrane receptor,intracellular signaling and cell adhesion related genes,and 48 down-regulated genes such as intracellular signaling and cell cycle regulator-related genes,were correlated with lymph node metastasis in HCC.Amongst them were included some interesting genes,such as MET,EPHA2,CCND1,MMP2,MMP13,CASP3,CDH1,and PTPN2.Expression of 16 genes(MET,CCND1,CCND2,VEGF,KRT18,RFC4,BIRC5,CDC6,MMP2,BCL2A1,CDH1,VIM,PDGFRA,PTPN2,SLC25A5 and DSP) were further confirmed by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptional polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR).CONCLUSION:Tumor metastasis is an important biological characteristic,which involves multiple genetic changes and cumulation.This genome-wide information contributes to an improved understanding of molecular alterations during lymph node metastasis in HCC.It may help clinicians to predict metastasis of lymph nodes and assist researchers in identifying novel therapeutic targets for metastatic HCC patients.Chun-Feng Lee Zhi-Qiang Ling Ting Zhao Shih-Hua Fang Weng-Cheng Chang San-Chih Lee Kuan-Rong Lee 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,3:7
3Advances in lithium niobate photonics:development status and perspectives显示文摘Lithium niobate(LN)has experienced significant developments during past decades due to its versatile properties,especially its large electro-optic(EO)coefficient.For example,bulk LN-based modulators with high speeds and a superior linearity are widely used in typical fiber-optic communication systems.However,with everincreasing demands for signal transmission capacity,the high power and large size of bulk LN-based devices pose great challenges,especially when one of its counterparts,integrated silicon photonics,has experienced dramatic developments in recent decades.Not long ago,high-quality thin-film LN on insulator(LNOI)became commercially available,which has paved the way for integrated LN photonics and opened a hot research area of LN photonics devices.LNOI allows a large refractive index contrast,thus light can be confined within a more compact structure.Together with other properties of LN,such as nonlinear/acousto-optic/pyroelectric effects,various kinds of high-performance integrated LN devices can be demonstrated.A comprehensive summary of advances in LN photonics is provided.As LN photonics has experienced several decades of development,our review includes some of the typical bulk LN devices as well as recently developed thin film LN devices.In this way,readers may be inspired by a complete picture of the evolution of this technology.We first introduce the basic material properties of LN and several key processing technologies for fabricating photonics devices.After that,various kinds of functional devices based on different effects are summarized.Finally,we give a short summary and perspective of LN photonics.We hope this review can give readers more insight into recent advances in LN photonics and contribute to the further development of LN related research.Guanyu Chen Nanxi Li Jun Da Ng Hong-Lin Lin Yanyan Zhou Yuan Hsing Fu Lennon Yao Ting Lee Yu Yu Ai-Qun Liu Aaron J.Danner 2022Advanced Photonics2022,4,3:6
4Ethanol extract from Gynostemma pentaphyllum ameliorates dopaminergic neuronal cell death in transgenic mice expressing mutant A53T human alpha-synuclein显示文摘Gynostemma(G.) pentaphyllum(Cucurbitaceae) contains various bioactive gypenosides. Ethanol extract from G. pentaphyllum(GP-EX) has been shown to have ameliorative effects on the death of dopaminergic neurons in animal models of Parkinson’s disease(PD) induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-and 6-hydroxydopamine. PD patients exhibit multiple symptoms, so PD-related research should combine neurotoxin models with genetic models. In the present study, we investigated the ameliorative effects of GP-EX, including gypenosides, on the cell death of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain of A53 T α-synuclein transgenic mouse models of PD(A53 T). Both GP-EX and gypenosides at 50 mg/kg per day were orally administered to the A53 T mice for 20 weeks.α-Synuclein-immunopositive cells and α-synuclein phosphorylation were increased in the midbrain of A53 T mice, which was reduced following treatment with GP-EX. Treatment with GP-EX modulated the reduced phosphorylation of tyrosine hydroxylase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK1/2), Bcl-2-associated death promoter(Bad) at Ser112, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK1/2) due to α-synuclein overexpression. In the A53 T group, GP-EX treatment prolonged the latency of the step-through passive avoidance test and shortened the transfer latency of the elevated plus maze test. Gypenosides treatment exhibited the effects and efficacy similar to those of GP-EX. Taken together, GP-EX, including gypenosides, has ameliorative effects on dopaminergic neuronal cell death due to the overexpression of α-synuclein by modulating ERK1/2, Bad at Ser112, and JNK1/2 signaling in the midbrain of A53 T mouse model of PD. Further studies are needed to investigate GP-EX as a treatment for neurodegenerative synucleinopathies, including PD. 6Rotablation in the treatment of high-risk patients with heavily calcified left-main coronary lesions显示文摘Objective Heavily calcified left-main coronary diseases (LMCA) remain a formidable challenge for percutaneous interventions (PCI). This study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of using rotational atherectomy (RA) in treating such lesions in actual practice. Methods From February 2004 to March 2012, all consecutive patients who received RA for heavily-calcified LMCA lesions in our cath lab were en-rolled. The relevant clinical and angiographic characteristics at the time of index PCI, as well as the clinical follow-up outcomes, were re-trieved and analyzed. Results A total of 34 consecutive patients were recruited with a mean age 77.2 ± 10.2 years. There were 82.4%pre-sented with acute coronary syndrome and 11.8%with cardiogenic shock. Chronic renal disease and diabetes were seen in 64.7%and 52.9%, respectively. Triple-vessel coronary disease was found in 76.5%of them. The mean SYNTAX score was 50 ± 15 and EuroSCORE II scale 5.6 ± 4.8. The angiographic success rate was 100%with a procedural success rate of 91.2%. The mean number of burrs per patient was 1.7 ± 0.5. Crossing-over stenting was used in 64.7%. Most stents were drug-eluting (67.6%). Intra-aortic ballon pump was used in 20.6%of the procedures. Three patients died during hospitalization, all due to presenting cardiogenic shock. No major complication occurred. Among 31 hospital survivors, the major adverse cardiac events (MACE) rate was 16.1%, all due to target lesion revascularization or target vessel revas-cularization. 8Distinct expression patterns in hepatitis B virus-and hepatitis C virus-infected hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To identify biomarkers indicating virus-specific hepatocarcinogenic process,differential mRNA expres-sion in 32 patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-/hepa-titis C virus (HCV)-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were investigated by means of cDNA microar-rays comprising of 886 genes. METHODS: Thirty two HCC patients were divided into two groups based on viral markers: hepatitis B virus positive and HCV positive. The expression profiles of 32 pairs of specimens (tumorous and surrounding non-tumorous liver tissues),consisting of 886 genes were analyzed. RESULTS: Seven up-regulated genes in HBV-associat-ed HCC comprised genes involved in protein synthesis (RPS5 ),cytoskeletal organization (KRT8 ),apoptosis related genes (CFLAR),transport (ATP5F1),cell mem-brane receptor related genes (IGFBP2),signal trans-duction or transcription related genes (MAP3K5),and metastasis-related genes (MMP9). The up-regulated genes in HCV-infected group included 4 genes: VIM (cell structure),ACTB (cell structure),GAPD (glycolysis) and CD58 (cell adhesion). The expression patterns of the 11 genes,identified by cDNA microarray,were con-firmed by quantitative RT-PCR in 32 specimens. CONCLUSION: The patterns of all identified genes were classified based on the viral factor involved in HBV-and HCV-associated HCC. Our results strongly suggest that the pattern of gene expression in HCC is closely associated with the etiologic factor. 9Bi_(2)S_(3) for Aqueous Zn Ion Battery with Enhanced Cycle Stability显示文摘Aqueous Zn ion batteries(ZIBs)are promising in energy storage due to the low cost,high safety,and material abundance.The development of metal oxides as the cathode for ZIBs is limited by the strong electrostatic forces between O2−and Zn2+which leads to poor cyclic stability.Herein,Bi2S3 is proposed as a promising cathode material for rechargeable aqueous ZIBs.Improved cyclic stability and fast diffusion of Zn2+is observed.Also,the layered structure of Bi2S3 with the weak van der Waals interaction between layers offers paths for diffusion and occupancy of Zn2+.As a result,the Zn/Bi2S3 battery delivers high capacity of 161 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and good cycling stability up to 100 cycles with ca.100%retention.The battery also demonstrates good cyclic performance of ca.80.3%over 2000 cycles at 1 A g−1.The storage mechanism in the Bi2S3 cathode is related to the reversible Zn ion intercalation/extraction reactions and the capacitive contribution.This work indicates that Bi2S3 shows great potential as the cathode of ZIBs with good performance and stability.Ting Xiong Yinming Wang Bosi Yin Wen Shi Wee Siang Vincent Lee Junmin Xue 2020Nano-Micro Letters2020,12,1:3
10Metal Organic framework derived carbon for ultrahigh power and long cyclic life aqueous Zn ion capacitor显示文摘In order to develop functional energy storage device,it is necessary to improve the energy and power density.As a potential candidate that can synergistically harmonize energy and power density,lithium ion capacitor(LIC)has shown exciting promises in recent years.However,in the recent years,alternative metal has been explored to replace lithium in such metal-ion capacitor system.Hence,in this work we present zinc ion capacitor(ZIC)in which zinc acts as negative electrode and Metal Organic framework(MOF)derived carbon as positive electrode.The assembled ZIC was able to demonstrate exceptional power density of 85.5 kW kg^-1 and a maximal energy density of 36.4W h kg^-1,together with 99%capacitance retention after cycling for 20000 cycles.Ting Xiong Yirui Shen Wee Siang Vincent Lee Junmin Xue 2020Nano Materials Science2020,2,2:3

15Silicon substrate-integrated hollow waveguide for miniaturized optical gas sensing显示文摘Gas sensors have a wide variety of applications.Among various existing gas sensing technologies,optical gas sensors have outstanding advantages.The development of the Internet of Things and consumer electronics has put stringent requirements on miniaturized gas sensing technology.Here,we demonstrate a chip-scale silicon substrate-integrated hollow waveguide(Si-iHWG) to serve as an optical channel and gas cell in an optical gas sensor.It is fabricated through silicon wafer etching and wafer bonding.The Si-i HWG chip is further assembled with an off-chip light source and detector to build a fully functional compact nondispersive infrared(NDIR) CO_(2) sensor.The chip size is 10 mm × 9 mm,and the dimension of the sensor excluding the microcontroller board is 50 mm × 25 mm × 16 mm.This chip solution with compactness,versatility,robustness,and low cost provides a cost-effective platform for miniaturized optical sensing applications ranging from air quality monitoring to con-sumer electronics.SHAONAN ZHENG HONG CAI LINFANG XU NANXI LI ZHONGHUA GU YAO ZHANG WEIGUO CHEN YANYAN ZHOU QINGXIN ZHANG LENNON YAO TING LEE 2022Photonics Research2022,10,1:2
