1Laboratory study on the mechanical behaviors of an anisotropic shale rock显示文摘Shale gas is becoming an important energy source worldwide.The geomechanical properties of shale rocks can have a major impact on the ef fi ciency of shale gas exploration.This paper studied the mineralogical and mechanical characteristics of a typical gas shale in Ohio,USA.Scanning electron microscope(SEM)with energy dispersive X-ray(EDX)analyses was employed to measure the microstructure and material composition of the shale rock.The anisotropic behaviors of shale rock,including compressive and tensile strengths,were experimentally measured.The characteristics of shale rock were also studied by nondestructive wave speed measurements.The shale demonstrated strong anisotropic behaviors with the tensile strengths perpendicular to the bedding plane around 300e360 times of that parallel to bedding plane.Results of ultrasonic tests indicated that both compression and shear wave velocities show strong anisotropic patterns.The compression wave speed was the smallest in the direction perpendicular to the bedding plane;while the shear wave speed was the smallest in the direction parallel to the bedding plane.The ratio of wave speed anisotropy is around 1.3e1.4 for compression wave;the ratio of shear wave speed anisotropy is larger and more diverse compared with the compression wave anisotropy.This might be related to the larger variability in the frictional adhesive strength along bedding plane than the compressive adhesive strength.Quan Gao Junliang Tao Jianying Hu Xiong(Bill) Yu 2015Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2015,7,2:10
2Global significance of the carbon cycle in the karst dynamic system:evidence from geological and ecological processes显示文摘On the basis of proposing the existence of a karst carbon cycle and carbon sink at a watershed scale,this paper provides four pieces of evidence for;the integration of geology and ecology during the carbon cycle processes m the karst dynamic system,and estxmated the karst carbon sink effect using the methods of comparative monitoring of paired watersheds and the carbon stable isotope tracer technique.The results of the soil carbon cycle in Maocun,Guilin,showed that the soil carbon cycle in the karst area,the weathering and dissolution of carbonate rocks under the soil,resulted in a lower soil respiration of 25% in the karstoarea than in a non-karst area (sandstone and shale),and the carbon isotope results indicated that 13.46% of the heavy carbon of the hmestone is involved in the soil carbon cycle.The comparative monitoring results m paxred watersheds,suggesting that the HCO3 concentration m a karst spring is 10 times that of a rivulet in a non-karst area,while the concentration of inorganic carbon flux is 23.8 times.With both chemical stoichiometry and carbon stable isotopes,the proportion of carbon in karst springs derived from carbonate rocks was found to be 58.52% and 37.65% respectively.The comparison on carbon exchange and isotopes at the water-gas interface between the granite and carbonate rock basins in the Li River showed that the CO2 emission of the karst water is 10.92 times that of the allogenic water from the non-karst area,while the carbon isotope of HCO3^- in karst water is lighter by 8.62%.However,this does not mean that the karst water body has a larger carbon source effect.On the contrary,it means the karst water body has a greater karst carbon sink effect.When the karst subterranean stream in Zhaidi,Guilin,is exposed at the surface,carbon-rich karst water stimulated the growth of aquatic plants.The values of carbon stable isotopes in the same species of submerged plants gradually becomes heavier and heavier,and the 512 m flow process has a maximum range of 15.46%.The calculation results showed that 12.52% of inorganic carbon is converted into organic carbon.According to the data that has been published,the global karst carbon sink flux was estimated to be 0.53-0.58 PgC/a,equivalent to 31.18%-34.41% of the global forest carbon sink flux.In the meanwhile,the karst carbon sink flux in China was calculated to be 0.051 PgC/a,accounting for 68% of its forest carbon sink flux.Jian-hua Cao Xia Wu Fen Huang Bill Hu Chris Groves Hui Yang Chun-lai Zhang 2018China Geology2018,1,1:9

15Identification of hydraulic conductivity distributions in density dependent flow fields of submarine groundwater discharge modeling using adjoint-state sensitivities显示文摘A mathematical optimal control method is developed to identify a hydraulic conductivity distribution in a density dependent flow field. Using a variational method, the adjoint partial differential equations are obtained for the density-dependent state equations used for the saline aquifer water flow. The adjoint equations are numerically solved in through a finite difference method. The developed method is applied to identify the hydraulic conductivity distribution through the numerical solution of an optimal control problem. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimal control method, three numerical experiments are conducted with artificial observation data. 17Comparison between gradient based UCODE2005 and the ensemble Kalman Filter for transient groundwater flow inverse modeling显示文摘Gradient based UCODE_2005 and data assimilation based on the Ensemble Kalman Filter(EnKF) are two different inverse methods. A synthetic two-dimensional flow case with four no-flow boundaries is used to compare the UCODE_2005 with the Ensemble Kalman Filter(EnKF) for their efficiency to inversely calculate and calibrate a hydraulic conductivity field based on hydraulic head data. A zonal, random heterogeneous conductivity field is calibrated by assimilating the time series of heads observed in monitoring wells. The study results indicate that the two inverse methods, UCODE_2005 and EnKF, could be used to calibrate the hydraulic conductivity field to a certain degree. More available observations and information about the conductivity field, more accurate inverse results will be obtained for the UCODE_2005. On the other hand, for a realistic zonal heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity field, EnKF can only efficiently determine the hydraulic conductivity field at the first several assimilated time steps. The results obtained by the UCODE_2005 look better than those by the EnKF. 18Variational Bayesian Kalman filter using natural gradient显示文摘We propose a technique based on the natural gradient method for variational lower bound maximization for a variational Bayesian Kalman filter.The natural gradient approach is applied to the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the parameterized variational distribution and the posterior density of interest.Using a Gaussian assumption for the parametrized variational distribution,we obtain a closed-form iterative procedure for the Kullback-Leibler divergence minimization,producing estimates of the variational hyper-parameters of state estimation and the associated error covariance.Simulation results in both a Doppler radar tracking scenario and a bearing-only tracking scenario are presented,showing that the proposed natural gradient method outperforms existing methods which are based on other linearization techniques in terms of tracking accuracy.Yumei HU Xuezhi WANG Quan PAN Zhentao HU Bill MORAN 2022Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2022,35,5:0
