| 1 | Changes in soil carbon sequestration and soil respiration following afforestation on paddy fields in north subtropical China显示文摘Aims Although many studies have reported net gains of soil organic carbon(SOC)after afforestation on croplands,this is uncertain for Chinese paddy rice croplands.Here,we aimed to evaluate the effects of affores-tation of paddy rice croplands on SOC sequestration and soil respiration(R).Such knowledge would improve our understanding of the efctive-ness of various land use options on greenhouse gas mitigation in China.Methods The investigation was conducted on the Chongming Island,north subtropical China.Field sites were reclaimed from coastal salt marshes in the 1960s,and soils were homogeneous with simple land use:histories.SOC stocks and R,levels were monitored over one year in a paddy rice cropland,an evergreen and a deciduous broad-leaved plantation established on previous paddy fields and a reference fal-low land site never cultivated.Laboratory incubation of soil under fast-changing temperatures was used to compare the temperature sensitivity(Q10)of SOC decomposition across land uses.Important Findings After 15-20 years of afforestation on paddy fields,SOC concentra-tion only slightly increased at the depth of 0--5 cm but decreased in deeper layers,which resulted in a net loss of SOC stock in the top 40cm.Seasonal increase of sOC was observed during the rice-growing period in croplands but not in afforested soils,suggest-ing a stronger SOC sequestration by paddy rice cropping.However,SOC sequestered under cropping was more labile,as indicated by its higher contents of dissolved organic carbon and microbial bio-mass.Also,paddy soils had higher annual R,than afforested soils;R,abruptly increased after paddy fields were drained and plowed and remained distinctively high throughout the dry farming period.Laboratory incubation revealed that paddy soils had a much higher Q10 of SOC decomposition than afforested soils.Given that tem-perature was the primary controller of R,in this region,it was con-cluded that despite the stronger SOC sequestration by paddy rice cropping,its SOC was less stable than in afforested systems and might be more easily released into the atmosphere under global warming. | Jun Cui Rongjuan Zhang Naishun Bu Huabin Zhang Boping Tang Zhaolei Li Lifeng Jiang Jiakuan Chen Changming Fang | 2013 | Journal of Plant Ecology2013,6,3: | 4 |

| 11 | Effects of different ridge-furrow mulching systems on yield and water use efficiency of summer maize in the Loess Plateau of China显示文摘Ridge-furrow film mulching has been proven to be an effective water-saving and yield-improving planting pattern in arid and semi-arid regions.Drought is the main factor limiting the local agricultural production in the Loess Plateau of China.In this study,we tried to select a suitable ridge-furrow mulching system to improve this situation.A two-year field experiment of summer maize(Zea mays L.)during the growing seasons of 2017 and 2018 was conducted to systematically analyze the effects of flat planting with no film mulching(CK),ridge-furrow with ridges mulching and furrows bare(RFM),and double ridges and furrows full mulching(DRFFM)on soil temperature,soil water storage(SWS),root growth,aboveground dry matter,water use efficiency(WUE),and grain yield.Both RFM and DRFFM significantly increased soil temperature in ridges,while soil temperature in furrows for RFM and DRFFM was similar to that for CK.The largest SWS was observed in DRFFM,followed by RFM and CK,with significant differences among them.SWS was lower in ridges than in furrows for RFM.DRFFM treatment kept soil water in ridges,resulting in higher SWS in ridges than in furrows after a period of no water input.Across the two growing seasons,compared with CK,RFM increased root mass by 10.2%and 19.3%at the jointing and filling stages,respectively,and DRFFM increased root mass by 7.9%at the jointing stage but decreased root mass by 6.0%at the filling stage.Over the two growing seasons,root length at the jointing and filling stages was respectively increased by 75.4%and 58.7%in DRFFM,and 20.6%and 30.2%in RFM.Relative to the jointing stage,the increased proportions of root mass and length at the filling stage were respectively 42.8%and 94.9%in DRFFM,63.2%and 115.1%in CK,and 76.7%and 132.1%in RFM,over the two growing seasons,showing that DRFFM slowed down root growth while RFM promoted root growth at the later growth stages.DRFFM treatment increased root mass and root length in ridges and decreased them in 0-30 cm soil layer,while RFM increased them in 0-30 cm soil layer.Compared with CK,DRFFM decreased aboveground dry matter while RFM increased it.Evapotranspiration was reduced by 9.8%and 7.1%in DRFFM and RFM,respectively,across the two growing seasons.Grain yield was decreased by 14.3%in DRFFM and increased by 13.6%in RFM compared with CK over the two growing seasons.WUE in CK was non-significantly 6.8%higher than that in DRFFM and significantly 22.5%lower than that in RFM across the two growing seasons.Thus,RFM planting pattern is recommended as a viable water-saving option for summer maize in the Loess Plateau of China. | CHEN Pengpeng GU Xiaobo LI Yuannong QIAO Linran LI Yupeng FANG Heng YIN Minhua ZHOU Changming | 2021 | Journal of Arid Land2021,13,9: | 1 |
| 12 | Evolution of Weyl nodes in Ni-doped thallium niobate pyrochlore Tl_(2-x)Ni_(x)Nb_(2)O_(7)显示文摘The magnetic Weyl semimetal(WSM)is important for fundamental physics and potential applications due to its spontaneous magnetism,robust band topology,and enhanced Berry curvature.It possesses many unique quantum effects,including a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect,Fermi arcs,and chiral anomaly.In this work,using ab initio calculations,we propose that Nidoped pyrochlore Tl2Nb2O7is a magnetic WSM caused by the exchange field splitting on bands around its quadratic band crossing point.The exchange field tuned by Ni 3d on-site Coulomb interaction parameter U drives the evolution of Weyl nodes and the resulting topological phase transition.As Weyl nodes can exist at generic points in the Brillouin zone and are hard to identify exactly,their creation and annihilation,i.e.,the change in their number,chirality,and distribution,have been consistently confirmed with a combined theoretical approach,which employs parity criterion,symmetry indicator analysis,and the Wilson loop of the Wannier center.We find that Weyl nodes remain in a large range of U and are close to the Fermi level,which makes the experimental observation very possible.We think that this method and our proposal of magnetic WSM will be useful in finding more WSMs and add to the understanding of the topological phase transition. | Yuefang Hu Changming Yue Danwen Yuan Jiacheng Gao Zhigao Huang Zhong Fang Chen Fang Hongming Weng Wei Zhang | 2022 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2022,65,9: | 0 |
