Crack-based and Hair-like Sensors Inspired from Arthropods:A Review显示文摘Over a long period of time, arthropods evolve to have two excellent mechanical sensilla of slit sensilla and trichobothria sensilla, which construct a perfect perception system. The former mainly perceives the change of the in-the-plane force while the latter perceives that of the out-of-plane force. In recent years, these two sensilla have attracted researchers as the models for developing artificial mechanical sensors. This review mainly includes the biomechanics and biomimetic manufacturing techniques as well as their future application value. In order to better understand the advantages of biological strategies, this review describes the morphology, mechanical analysis, and information recognition of slit sensilla and trichobothria sensilla. Then this review highlights the recent development of Crack-based Sensors(CBSs)and Hair-like Sensors(HLSs)based on the analysis of biological mechanism. The manufacturing method and substrate of crack in CBS and those of hair rods in HLS are discussed respectively. Finally, the practical applications and potential value of two sensilla, such as flexible wearable electronic devices, robot sensing system, autopilot sensing and wind tunnel speed detection, are briefly discussed. | Changchao Zhang Junqiu Zhang Daobing Chen Xiancun Meng Linpeng Liu Kejun Wang Zhibin Jiao Tao Sun Dakai Wang Shichao Niu Zhiwu Han Luquan Ren | 2020 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2020,17,5: | 2

Large Curvature Folding Strategies of Butterfly Proboscis显示文摘Due to its real-time control, high folding ratio, and structure self-locking,flexible large curvature self-folding devices have broad application prospects, such as foldable human implants, flexible electronics, and flexible robots.Driven by this background, flexible large curvature folding butterfly(Polyura eudamippus)proboscises were studied in this work. The folding ratio of the proboscises was about 15.The curvature of coiled proboscises ranged from about 150 m_1 to 880 m The external and internal structures of the proboscises were studied by different methods.Three main strategies for large-curvature folding of proboscises were identified:a gradual decrease in thickness,a lower elastic modulus, and(most importantly)large numbers of regular corrugated cracks arranged on the surface. These corrugated cracks can effectively accommodate the coiled strain and provide space for the large curvature folding of proboscises. Finally,a 4D printed coiled sample with corrugated cracks was fabricated to mimic the proboscises stretching process.Large-curvature folding strategies, based on these proboscises, provide insights for the biomimetic design of artificial highly folded components. | Daobing Chen Honglie Song Qingping Liu Jie Gan Yang Liu Keyu Che' Chong Wang Shifeng Wen Yan Zhou Chunze Yan Junqiu Zhang Yusheng Shi Zhiwu Han | 2020 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2020,17,6: | 1

Micro/nano-scale Characterization and Fatigue Fracture Resistance of Mechanoreceptor with Crack-shaped Slit Arrays in Scorpion显示文摘The nocturnal scorpion Heterometrus petersii uses Basitarsal Compound Slit Sensilla (BCSS) as mechanoreceptor to detect mechanical signal (e.g. substrate vibration, cyclic loads caused by walking) without fatigue failure such as initiation of fatigue crack and further propagation of crack-shaped slit. The outstanding perceptive function has been discovered for over half a century. However, it is not yet clear about the microstructure, material composition and micromechanical property which are all important factors that determine the fatigue fracture resistance of the BCSS. Here, the microscopic characteristics of the BCSS were thoroughly studied. The results dicate that anti-fatigue resilin and stiff chitinous cuticle form multilayered composite as the main body of the BCSS. Meanwhile, the pre-existing slit as mechanosensory structure is covered by cuticular membrane which has different mechanical property with the epicuticle. Theoretical analysis shows that the structure-composition-property synergistic relations of composites confer on the BCSS with extreme fatigue fracture tolerance. | Kejun Wang Junqiu Zhang Yuqiang Fang Daobing Chen Linpeng Liu Zhiwu Han Luquan Ren | 2019 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2019,16,3: | 1
Failure Patterns and Mechanisms of Hydraulic Fracture Propagation Behavior in the Presence of Naturally Cemented Fractures显示文摘In this study,we use the extended finite element method(XFEM)with a consideration of junction enrichment functions to investigate the mechanics of hydraulic fractures related to naturally cemented fractures. In the proposed numerical model, the lubrication equation is adopted to describe the fluid flow within fractures. The fluid-solid coupling systems of the hydraulic fracturing problem are solved using the Newton-Raphson method. The energy release rate criterion is used to determine the cross/arrest behavior between a hydraulic fracture(HF)and a cemented natural fracture(NF).The failure patterns and mechanisms of crack propagation at the intersection of natural fractures are discussed.Simulation results show that after crossing an NF,the failure mode along the cemented NF path may change from the tensile regime to the shear or mixed-mode regime. When an advancing HF kinks back toward the matrix, the failure mode may gradually switch back to the tensile-dominated regime.Key factors, including the length of the upper/lower portion of the cemented NF,horizontal stress anisotropy, and the intersection angle of the crack propagation are investigated in detail. An uncemented or partially cemented NF will form a more complex fracture network than a cemented NF.This study provides insight into the formation mechanism of fracture networks in formations that contain cemented NF. | Daobing Wang Fang Shi Hao Qin Dongliang Sun Bo Yu | 2021 | Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2021,,3: | 1
A Numerical Study on Hydraulic Fracturing Problems via the Proper Generalized Decomposition Method显示文摘The hydraulic fracturing is a nonlinear,fluid-solid coupling and transient problem,in most cases it is always time-consuming to simulate this process numerically. In recent years, although many numerical methods were proposed to settle this problem, most of them still require a large amount of computer resources. Thus it is a high demand to develop more efficient numerical approaches to achieve the real-time monitoring of the fracture geometry during the hydraulic fracturing treatment. In this study,a reduced order modeling technique namely Proper Generalized Decomposition(PGD),is applied to accelerate the simulations of the transient,non-linear coupled system of hydraulic fracturing problem,to match this extremely tight response time constraint. The separability of the solution in space and time dimensions is studied for a simplified model problem. The solid and fluid equations are coupled explicitly by inverting the solid discrete problem, and a simple iterative procedure to handle the non-linear characteristic of the hydraulic fracturing problem is proposed in this work.Numeral validation illustrates that the results of PGD match well with these of standard finite element method in terms o f fracture opening and fluid pressure in the hydro-fracture.Moreover,after the off-line calculations, the numerical results can be obtained in real time. | Daobing Wang Sergio Zlotnik Pedro Díez Hongkui Ge Fujian Zhou Bo Yu | 2020 | Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2020,,2: | 1
Coupled heat-fluid-solid numerical study on heat extraction potential of hot dry rocks based on discrete fracture network model显示文摘Fracture networks within hot dry rock(HDR)geothermal reservoirs are complex, and heat extraction via water injection is thus a coupled process of heat-fluid-solid multifield. In this paper, utilizing the theory of normally distributed random functions,we develop a corresponding pre-processing subprogram to establish a discrete network model of complex fracture distribution in HDR reservoirs;then construct a heat-fluid-solid finite element model for heat extraction via water injection and compare the numerical solution with the analytical solution of the one-dimensional non-isothermal consolidation problem for verification. The numerical simulation results show that the main factors affecting the heat extraction efficiency of HDR reservoirs include fracture width, fracture density, fracture permeability, and matrix permeability. When a HDR reservoir is injected with water for heat extraction, there is a certain threshold value of these influential parameters, beyond which the outlet temperature drops significantly, resulting in an obvious thermal breakthrough. When injecting water for heat extraction, the values of these parameters should be controlled and kept at a reasonable level, otherwise, the HDR reservoir may enter a thermal breakthrough stage in advance, which is not conducive for long-period heat extraction.Influenced by the random distribution of complex fractures, the leading edge of the cold front may present an irregular distribution.During the process of heat extraction, the stress gradually changes from a compressional state to a tensile state, which induces further damage to the HDR reservoir. | Daobing Wang Haiyan Zhu Marembo Micheal Xuanhe Tang Qin Li Xiangyi Yi Dongliang Sun Bo Yu Qiang Liu | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0

A Numerical Study on the Propagation Mechanisms of Hydraulic Fractures in Fracture-Cavity Carbonate Reservoirs显示文摘Field data suggests that carbonate reservoirs contain abundant natural fractures and cavities. The propagation mechanisms of hydraulic fractures in fracture-cavity reservoirs are different from conventional reservoirs on account of the stress concentration surrounding cavities. In this paper,we develop a fully coupled numerical model using the extended finite element method(XFEM)to investigate the behaviors and propagation mechanisms of hydraulic fractures in fracture-cavity reservoirs.Simulation results show that a higher lateral stress coefficient can enhance the influence of the natural cavity, causing a more curved fracture path. However, lower confining stress or smaller in-situ stress difference can reduce this influence, and thus contributes to the penetration of the hydraulic fracture towards the cavity.Higher fluid viscosity and high fluid pumping rate are both able to attenuate the effect of the cavity. The frictional natural fracture connected to the cavity can significantly change the stress distribution around the cavity, thus dramatically deviates the hydraulic fracture from its original propagation direction. It is also found that the natural cavity existing between two adjacent fracturing stages will significantly influence the stress distribution between fractures and is more likely to result in irregular propagation paths compared to the case without a cavity. | Fang Shi Daobing Wang Xiaogang Chen | 2021 | Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2021,,5: | 0
Microstructures,Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Pure Tungsten—A Comparison Between Selective Laser Melting and Hot Rolling显示文摘A comparative study on the influence of different manufacturing methods(selective laser melting and hot rolling)on the microstructure, mechanical and thermal behaviours of tungsten(W)was presented for the first time. The results indicated that the selective laser melting(SLM)W exhibited a finer grain sizes,a lower strength ductility, hardness and thermal conductivity compared to hot-rolled W.The main reason for this result was that the laser underwent rapid heating and cooling when it was used to melt W powder with high energy density, resulting in large internal stress in the sample after manufacturing.Subsequently, the internal stress was released, leading to the generation of microcracks at the grain boundaries, thereby affecting the performance of SLM W samples. In addition, the higher fraction of high-angle grain boundaries(HAGBs)of SLM W was found to be the key factor for intrinsic brittleness.Because the HAGBs are the preferred crack paths, which could promote crack propagation and decrease fracture energy. | Chong Wang Daobing Chen Yan Zhou Zhuoming Xie Qianfeng Fang Shifeng Wen Chunze Yan | 2022 | Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2022,35,3: | 0
Vibrational Receptor of Scorpion(Heterometrus petersii):The Basitarsal Compound Slit Sensilla显示文摘Recently,micro-vibrational perception mechanisms of nocturnal arthropods such as scorpions and spiders are attracting increasingly more attention and research. The relevant micro-vibrational receptors are exquisite,in terms of their comprehensive performance such as sensitivity, stability, high anti-interference,and ultralow-power consumption. In this work,we find the Basitarsal Compound Slit Sensilla (BCSS) of scorpion (Heterometrus petersii) are composed of the crack-shaped slits as mechanosensory structure and can efficiently detect substrate-borne vibrational signal in complex natural environment. The study on microstructures and mechanical properties of tissue phases constituting the BCSS reveals that the strategy of tessellation is used to make crack-shaped slit amplify the tiny mechanical signal. In addition, the magnitude-frequency characteristics of electrophysiological signals caused by vibration stimulation with different frequencies indicate that the scorpion is sensitive to micro-vibrational signals at a certain frequency range.Meanwhile, the vibrational perception mechanism based on geometrical amplification and resonance is proposed to explain how scorpions detect the tiny biotic vibrational signal efficiently in noise environment. This finding not only promotes our further understanding of ultra-sensitive mechanism of the vibrational receptors, but also provides biological inspiration for the next generation of mechanosensor for a broad range of applications. | Kejun Wang Junqiu Zhang Linpeng Liu Daobing Chen Honglie Song Yinliang Wang Shichao Niu Zhiwu Han Luquan Ren | 2019 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2019,16,1: | 0
Study on a Dual Embedded Discrete Fracture Model for Fluid Flow in Fractured Porous Media显示文摘Simulation of fluid flow in the fractured porous media is very important and challenging.Researchers have developed some models for fractured porous media. With the development of related research in recent years, the prospect of embedded discrete fracture model(EDFM)is more and more bright. However, since the size of the fractures in the actual reservoir varies greatly,a very fine grid should be used which leads to a huge burden to the computing resources. To address this challenge,in the present paper,an upscaling based model is proposed. In this model, the flow in large-scale fractures is directly described by the EDFM while that in the small-scale fractures is upscaled through local simulation by EDFM.The EDFM is used to simulate the large-and small-scale fractures independently two times,so the new model is called dual embedded discrete fracture model(D-EDFM).In this paper, the detailed implementation process of D-EDFM is introduced and, through test cases,it is found the proposed model is a feasible method to simulate the flow in fractured porous media. | Heng Zhang Tingyu Li Dongxu Han Daobing Wang Dongliang Sun Bo Yu | 2020 | Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2020,,7: | 0
