| 2 | Irritable bowel syndrome: A microbiome-gut-brain axis disorder?显示文摘Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is an extremely prevalent but poorly understood gastrointestinal disorder. Consequently, there are no clear diagnostic markers to help diagnose the disorder and treatment options are limited to management of the symptoms. The concept of a dysregulated gut-brain axis has been adopted as a suitable model for the disorder. The gut microbiome may play an important role in the onset and exacerbation of symptoms in the disorder and has been extensively studied in this context. Although a causal role cannot yet be inferred from the clinical studies which have attempted to characterise the gut microbiota in IBS, they do confirm alterations in both community stability and diversity. Moreover, it has been reliably demonstrated that manipulation of the microbiota can influence the key symptoms, including abdominal pain and bowel habit, and other prominent features of IBS. A variety of strategies have been taken to study these interactions, including probiotics, antibiotics, faecal transplantations and the use of germ-free animals. There are clear mechanisms through which the microbiota can produce these effects, both humoral and neural. The primary aim of this study was to examine the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in patients with IBS and to relate such response to plasma cytokine profiles. Methods: A total of 151 subjects, 76 patients and 75 controls, were recruited. The patients with IBS were diagnosed according to Rome II criteria. Forty-nine patients and 48 matched controls had cytokine levels measured, and a subset of 21 patients and 21 controls also underwent a corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) stimulation test with plasma levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol measured. The remaining 27 patients and 27 controls underwent a dexamethasone (1 mg) challenge. Results: Cortisol and the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)- 6 (together with its soluble receptor) and IL-8 were elevated in all IBS subgroups (diarrhea predominant, constipated, and alternators), although the elevation was most marked in the constipated subgroup. There was no alteration in the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL- 10. Following CRH infusion, an exaggerated release of both ACTH and cortisol was observed in patients with IBS. There was a significant correlation between the ACTH response (δ ACTH) and the IL- 6 levels. A similar relationship existed between the δ ACTH/δ cortisol ratio and the IL- 6 levels. Dexamethasone suppression of cortisol was similar in patients and controls. Conclusions: IBS is characterized by an overactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and a proinflammat ory cytokine increase. | Dinan T.G. Quigley E.M.M. In order to validate the mathematical model developed for the cooling process of real CDQ shaft, the one-seventh scale experimental setup was established. With the air as the working fluid and the coke as the packed bed, the coke and gas temperatures and the pressure drop in the cooling shaft were measured. A mathematical model based on the non-Darcian and non-thermal equilibrium model for the cooling process of the CDQ experimental shaft was presented. The computational results were compared to the experimental data. | 10 | Scenario-based estimation of catchment carbon storage: linking multi-objective land allocation with InVEST model in a mixed agriculture-forest landscape显示文摘This study performed a scenario-based land allocation in a mixed agriculture-forest landscape in northern Iran to investigate how different land use policies contribute to changes in carbon storage.In pursuit of this goal,a temporal profile of the trade-off between the region’s land use land cover(LULC)classes was produced using Landsat image of the year 2016.The weighted linear combination procedure was also used to map the suitability of land for agriculture,forest,urban,and rangeland based on ecological and socio-economic criteria.The suitability maps were analyzed through the Multi-Objective Land Allocation procedure under five scenarios with differing areas devoted to each LULC to generate different patterns of LULC distribution in the region.In addition,the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)model was used to estimate the potential of LULC classes in carbon storage.The amount of carbon storage differed significantly between the scenarios,ranging from 1.29 tons/ha/year when the majority of the land was devoted to agriculture(76%of the area)to 5.40 tons/ha/year when the landscape was dominated by forest(77%of the area).The extreme conditions presented in this research may not be as likely to occur,but opens a dialog between different stakeholders and informs of a probable trend of ecosystem service loss due to agricultural land expansion. | Rahmatollah Niakan Lahiji Naghmeh Mobarghaee Dinan Houman Liaghati Hamidreza Ghaffarzadeh Alireza Vafaeinejad | 2020 | Frontiers of Earth Science2020,14,3: | 2 |
