| 1 | A unified intrinsic functional expansion theory for solitary waves显示文摘A new theory is developed here for evaluating solitary waves on water, with results of high accuracy uniformly valid for waves of all heights, from the highest wave with a corner crest of 120° down to very low ones of diminishing height. Solutions are sought for the Euler model by employing a unified expansion of the logarithmic hodograph in terms of a set of intrinsic component functions analytically determined to represent all the intrinsic properties of the wave entity from the wave crest to its outskirts. The unknown coefficients in the expansion are determined by minimization of the mean-square error of the solution, with the minimization optimized so as to take as few terms as needed to attain results as high in accuracy as attainable. In this regard, Stokes's formula, F2μπ = tanμπ, relating the wave speed (the Froude number F) and the logarithmic decrement μ of its wave field in the outskirt, is generalized to establish a new criterion requiring (for minimizing solution error) the functional expansion to contain a finite power series in M terms of Stokes's basic term (singular inμ), such that 2Mμ is just somewhat beyond unity, i.e. 2Mμ (^-) 1. | 2 | Topological evolution of coexpression networks by new gene integration maintains the hierarchical and modular structures in human ancestors显示文摘We analyze the global structure and evolution of human gene coexpression networks driven by new gene integration. When the Pearson correlation coefficient is greater than or equal to 0.5, we find that the coexpression network consists of 334 small components and one 'giant' connected subnet comprising of 6317 interacting genes. This network shows the properties of power-law degree distribution and small-world. The average clustering coefficient of younger genes is larger than that of the elderly genes(0.6685 vs. 0.5762). Particularly, we find that the younger genes with a larger degree also show a property of hierarchical architecture. The younger genes play an important role in the overall pivotability of the network and this network contains few redundant duplicate genes. Moreover, we find that gene duplication and orphan genes are two dominant evolutionary forces in shaping this network. Both the duplicate genes and orphan genes develop new links through a 'rich-gets-richer'mechanism. With the gradual integration of new genes into the ancestral network, most of the topological structure features of the network would gradually increase. Tangential CT injection into STOR-M induced H-mode-like phenomena including doubling the electron density, reduction in the Ha radiation level, suppression of the floating potential fluctuations, suppression of the m = 2 Mirnov oscillations, and increase in the global energy confinement time. Experimental setup, bench-test results, and some preliminary injection data for vertical CT injection experiments on STOR-M will be shown. | 12 | The power of“controllers”:Transposon-mediated duplicated genes evolve towards neofunctionalization显示文摘Since the discovery of the first transposon by Dr.Barbara McClintock,the prevalence and diversity of transposable elements(TEs)have been gradually recognized.As fundamental genetic components,TEs drive organismal evolution not only by contributing functional sequences(e.g.,regulatory elements or“controllers”as phrased by Dr.McClintock)but also by shuffling genomic sequences.In the latter respect,TE-mediated gene duplications have contributed to the origination of new genes and attracted extensive interest.In response to the development of this field,we herein attempt to provide an overview of TEmediated duplication by focusing on common rules emerging across duplications generated by different TE types.Specifically,despite the huge divergence of transposition machinery across TEs,we identify three common features of various TE-mediated duplication mechanisms,including end bypass,template switching,and recurrent transposition.These three features lead to one common functional outcome,namely,TE-mediated duplicates tend to be subjected to exon shuffling and neofunctionalization.Therefore,the intrinsic properties of the mutational mechanism constrain the evolutionary trajectories of these duplicates.We finally discuss the future of this field including an in-depth characterization of both the duplication mechanisms and functions of TE-mediated duplicates. | Huijing Ma Mengxia Wang Yong E.Zhang Shengjun Tan | 2023 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2023,50,7: | 0 |
