| 1 | A comparative laboratory diagnosis of malaria:microscopy versus rapid diagnostic test kits显示文摘Objective:To compare the two methods of rapid diagnostic tests(RDTs)and microscopy in the diagnosis of malaria.Methods:RDTs and microscopy were carried out to diagnose malaria. Percentage malaria parasitaemia was calculated on thin films and all non-acute cases of plasmodiasis with less than 0.001%malaria parasitaemia were regarded as negative.Results were simply presented as percentage positive of the total number of patients under study.The results of RDTs were compared to those of microscopy while those of RDTs based on antigen were compared to those of RDTs based on antibody.Patients' follow-up was made for all cases.Results: All the 200 patients under present study tested positive to RDTs based on malaria antibodies(serum)method(100%).128 out of 200 tested positive to RDTs based on malaria antigen(whole blood)method(64%),while 118 out of 200 patients under present study tested positive to visual microscopy of Lieshman and diluted Giemsa(59%).All patients that tested positive to microscopy also tested positive to RDTs based on antigen.All patients on the second day of follow-up were non-febrile and had antimalaria drugs.Conclusions;We conclude based on the present study that the RDTs based on malaria antigen(whole blood)method is as specific as the traditional microscopy and even appears more sensitive than microscopy.The RDTs based on antibody(serum)method is unspecific thus it should not be encouraged.It is most likely that Africa being an endemic region,formation of certain levels of malaria antibody may not be uncommon.The present study also supports the opinion that a good number of febrile cases is not due to malaria. | 2 | Antiinflammatory activity of the methanolic extract of the seeds of Carica papaya in experimental animals显示文摘Objective:To scientifically verify the claims of our traditional healers on the anti-inflammatory activity of Carica papaya(C.papaya) and possibly deduce its activities.Methods:0.1 mL of fresh egg albumin was injected into the right hind-paw of adult white Wistar rats to induce inflammation an hour post intraperitoneal(IP) administration of 50-200 mg/kg doses of the extract to 3 groups of 5 rats per group.The 4th group of 5 rats was used as negative control and received 2 mL/kg(IP) of physiological saline,while the 5th group of 5 rats was used as positive-comparative control and received(IP) 150 mg/kg of aspirin.Increases in diameter of the paw were measured with the aid of Veneer Calipers before extract administration and at interval of 30 minutes post administration for further 2 hours.Percentage inhibition of oedema was calculated for each dose group and results were subjected to statistical analysis using student /-test and analysis of variance(ANOVA).Results:All doses of extract showed a dose and time dependent inhibition effects of oedema(P<0.05).Conclusions:This work is at present though limited to animals,the anti-inflammatory activity of the seeds of C.papaya is perhaps proven. | Amazu LU Azikiwe CCA Njoku CJ Osuala FN Nwosu PJC Ajugwo AO Enye JC | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,11: | 2 |
| 3 | HIV/AIDS selective infectivity-report of two peculiar cases显示文摘We report two peculiar cases that were observed in two communities of Anambra State,South East Nigeria.The first case was a woman of 44 with a history of blood transfusion from a donor of questionable HIV status.A pint of blood was transfused in a private Hospital on the 15th January. 2000.She has had no form of antiviral therapy until 22nd April.2008 when she came to the hospital for routine medical check up.Her HIV result came out confirmed positive while that of her husband came out negative.She has had active sexual life with her husband in the previous eight years as they have had some difficulties in getting their desired extra two children having earlier gotten a boy and a girl.The second case involves a family of six.A couple with four children of ages about 6 months,2 years,3 years and 5 years.The youngest,a female presented with fever and multiple lymphadenopathy.She tested HIV positive and so was her mother and her second sibling.But her father and two other siblings remained negative at post three and six months intervals from their very first test date with us.These reported cases appear to go contrary to earher formed opinion on HIV transmission.We support the opinion on a naturally,occurring substance,APOBEC3G which possibly confers permanent immunity against the HIV virus.We recommend clinical trials of the characterized APOBEC3G as a vaccine for non HIV infected persons of all ages and to people living with HIV/AIDS as a therapeutic drug. | Azikiwe CCA Ifezulike CC Amazu LU Enye JC Nwosu PJC Osuala FN | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,12: | 0 |
| 4 | Wound healing effect of methanolic leaf extract of Napoleona vogelii(Family:Lecythidaceae) in rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the wound healing properly of Napoleona vogelii leaf extract in folkloric medicine.Methods:Roth sexes of adult albino rats(n=25) were used in this study and another group(n=30) were subjected to acute toxicity test(LD_(50)) of the plant extract.For the LD_(50),three randomized groups of 5 rats were first treated with 10,100,1 000 mg/kg body weight(bw),orally.This w as followed by a second treatment of 1500,3000,and 5 000 mg/kg bw of the leaf extract with continual monitoring of the animals for mortality or non-mortality.Incision wounds(1.3cm) were created on the skin of five groups of 5 rals using surgical blade under anesthesia.The first group was topically treated with petroleum jelly alone,group 2 was topically applied 400 mg/mL w/v of the reference drug,Neobaein,while group 3-5 were topically treated with 5-50 mg/mL w/v of the plant extract,respectively.Results:The percentage yield of the extract was 49.80%w/w dry matter.The phytochemical analysis revealed several bioactive constituents including glycosides,tannins,alkaloids,perpenoids.saponins,steroids,proteins,and carbohydrates.The LD_(50) was beyond our experimental limit and was not determined.Increased concentrations(5,20,and 50mg/mL w/v) of the extract had significant(ANOVA,P<0.05) healing effect on the incision wounds giving rise to 125%-140% while treatmentawith Neobacin resulted in 150% healing effect on the third treatment regimen compared to the control(100%).Conclusions:These data indicate that Napoleona vogelii leaf extract contains potent bioactive compounds containing wound healing activity,substantiating its use as a wound healer in folkloric medicine. | Adiele LC Adiele RC Enye JC | 2014 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2014,7,8: | 0 |
