1Biodiesel production from green seaweed Ulva fasciata catalyzed by novel waste catalysts from Pakistan Steel Industry显示文摘This research article is based on the biodiesel synthesis from the marine green macroalga Ulva fasciata, collected from the coast of Karachi, Pakistan using new and the most potential waste catalysts from Pakistan Steel Industry.The oil was extracted with n-hexane then it was analyzed by GC, TLC and by the examination of fuel properties.The metal analysis of catalysts was carried out by chemical tests and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy(FAAS). The thermal treatment of catalysts at 1500–1700 °C during various processes in steel manufacturing industry converted the metals to metal oxides. The presence of CaO, MgO and ZnO in these catalysts made them highly reactive for biodiesel synthesis. The basicity of waste industrial catalysts was calculated to know their basic strength. The transesterification of U. fasciata oil was performed by fast stirring using 9:1 molar ratio of methanol/oil in the presence of seven different waste industrial catalysts for 6 h at 80–100 °C. The solid catalysts were easily separated from product for re-use. In addition, the rate of reaction in the presence of these catalysts was found to be quite feasible. The waste brown dust from the steel converter gave the highest yield(88%) of biodiesel. 3Weed growth, herbicide efficacy, and rice productivity in dry seeded paddy field under different wheat stubble management methods显示文摘To ascertain the influence of wheat stubble management options and chemical weed control methods on weed growth and productivity of dry direct-seeded fine rice, a two years' field study was undertaken at the Agronomic Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan in 2013 and 2014. Different wheat stubble management methods, viz., incorporation, burning and retention were executed during seed-bed preparation. While, herbicide treatments comprised of a weed check, weed free, pendimethalin followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl, and bispyribac sodium followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl. Results revealed that weed control efficacy of both herbicide treatments ranged from 84 to 94%. Herbicide treatments significantly reduced weed density(88–90%) and dry weight(86–88%), while improved the rice growth attributes compared with weed check. Application of bispyribac sodium followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl in stubble retention recorded 226 and 273% increase in kernel yield over weedy check in 2013 and 2014, respectively. In stubble incorporation, pendimethalin followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl was more effective in increasing(256–293%) rice yields over weedy check. Among different treatment combinations, the maximum net benefits(1 397.49^(–1) 472.22 USD ha^(–1)), net returns(636–700 USD ha^(–1)), benefit cost ratio(1.77^(–1).83) and marginal rate of return(2 187–2 330%) were recorded with the application of bispyribac sodium followed by fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl in stubble retention. 6Convolutional Neural Network-Based Classificationof Multiple Retinal Diseases Using Fundus Images显示文摘Use of deep learning algorithms for the investigation and analysis of medical images has emerged as a powerful technique.The increase in retinal dis-eases is alarming as it may lead to permanent blindness if left untreated.Automa-tion of the diagnosis process of retinal diseases not only assists ophthalmologists in correct decision-making but saves time also.Several researchers have worked on automated retinal disease classification but restricted either to hand-crafted fea-ture selection or binary classification.This paper presents a deep learning-based approach for the automated classification of multiple retinal diseases using fundus images.For this research,the data has been collected and combined from three distinct sources.The images are preprocessed for enhancing the details.Six layers of the convolutional neural network(CNN)are used for the automated feature extraction and classification of 20 retinal diseases.It is observed that the results are reliant on the number of classes.For binary classification(healthy vs.unhealthy),up to 100%accuracy has been achieved.When 16 classes are used(treating stages of a disease as a single class),93.3%accuracy,92%sensitivity and 93%specificity have been obtained respectively.For 20 classes(treating stages of the disease as separate classes),the accuracy,sensitivity and specificity have dropped to 92.4%,92%and 92%respectively.Aqsa Aslam Saima Farhan Momina Abdul Khaliq Fatima Anjum Ayesha Afzaal Faria Kanwal 2023Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing2023,,6:0

8Biodiesel synthesis via metal oxides and metal chlorides catalysis from marine alga Melanothamnus afaqhusainii显示文摘This research article demonstrates the most comprehensive comparative catalytic study of different metal oxides and metal chlorides towards the methanolysis of triglycerides of marine red macroalga Melanothamnus afaqhusainii.CaO was found to be the most reactive metal oxide that yielded 80% biodiesel while ZnCl_2 was the most reactive metal chloride that produced 60% biodiesel by mechanical stirring for 6 h at 100–110 °C.The overall reactivity order of the catalysts was found to be CaO>MgO>PbO_2>ZnCl_2>TiCl_4>PbO>HgCl_2>ZnO>AlCl_3>SnCl_2>TiO_2whereas,CaCl_2,MgCl_2,Al_2O_3,HgO,PbCl_2,MnO_2,MnCl_2,Fe_2O_3 and FeCl_3 were found to be non-reactive for transesterification of triglycerides.In addition,a detailed study of the screening of mobile phases and spraying reagents was conducted which showed that petroleum ether :chloroform :toluene(7:2:1)is the best mobile phase,whereas iodine crystals/silica gel is the best visualizing agent for the thin layer chromatography(TLC)examination of biodiesel.Biodiesel production was confirmed by comparative TLC examination.It was further supported by the determination of fuel properties of biodiesel,which were found to be similar to the standard limits of American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM).Abdul Majeed Khan Noureen Fatima 2016Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2016,24,3:0
9Risk and predictors of severity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes and COVID-19 in Dubai显示文摘BACKGROUND Globally,patients with diabetes suffer from increased disease severity and mortality due to coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Old age,high body mass index(BMI),comorbidities,and complications of diabetes are recognized as major risk factors for infection severity and mortality.AIM To investigate the risk and predictors of higher severity and mortality among inhospital patients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes(T2D)during the first wave of the pandemic in Dubai(March–September 2020).METHODS In this cross-sectional nested case-control study,a total of 1083 patients with COVID-19 were recruited.This study included 890 men and 193 women.Of these,427 had T2D and 656 were non-diabetic.The clinical,radiographic,and laboratory data of the patients with and without T2D were compared.Independent predictors of mortality in COVID-19 non-survivors were identified in patients with and without T2D.RESULTS T2D patients with COVID-19 were older and had higher BMI than those without T2D.They had higher rates of comorbidities such as hypertension,ischemic heart disease,heart failure,and more life-threatening complications.All laboratory parameters of disease severity were significantly higher than in those without T2D.Therefore,these patients had a longer hospital stay and a significantly higher mortality rate.They died from COVID-19 at a rate three times higher than patients without.Most laboratory and radiographic severity indices in non-survivors were high in patients with and without T2D.In the univariate analysis of the predictors of mortality among all COVID-19 non-survivors,significant associations were identified with old age,increased white blood cell count,lymphopenia,and elevated serum troponin levels.In multivariate analysis,only lymphopenia was identified as an independent predictor of mortality among T2D non-survivors.CONCLUSION Patients with COVID-19 and T2D were older with higher BMI,more comorbidities,higher disease severity indices,more severe proinflammatory state with cardiac involvement,and died from COVID-19 at three times the rate of patients without T2D.The identified mortality predictors will help healthcare workers prioritize the management of patients with COVID-19.Fatheya Alawadi Alaaeldin Bashier Azza Abdulaziz Bin Hussain Nada Al-Hashmi Fawzi Al Tayb Bachet Mohamed Mahmoud Aly Hassanein Marwan Abdelrahim Zidan Rania Soued Amar Hassan Khamis Debasmita Mukhopadhyay Fatima Abdul Aya Osama Fatima Sulaiman Muhammad Hamed Farooqi Riad Abdel Latif Bayoumi 2023World Journal of Diabetes2023,14,8:0
10Tocilizumab in severe COVID-19-A randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled trial显示文摘Background:The therapeutic effectiveness of interleukin-6 receptor inhibitor in critically ill hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is uncertain.Methods:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the outcome as recovery or death of tocilizumab for severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)infection,we conducted a randomized,double-blinded,placebo-controlled phase 2 trial in critically ill COVID-19 adult patients.The patients were randomly assigned in a 4:1 ratio to receive standard medical treatment plus the recommended dose of either tocilizumab or the placebo drug.Randomization was stratified.The primary outcome was the recovery or death after administration of tocilizumab or a placebo drug.The secondary outcomes were clinical recovery or worsening of the patients’symptoms and inflammatory markers and discharge from the hospital.Results:Of 190 patients included in this study,152 received tocilizumab,and 38 received a placebo.The duration of hospital stay of the interventional group was 12.9±9.2,while the placebo group had a more extended hospital stay(15.6±8.8).The mortality ratio for the primary outcome,ie,mortality or recovery in the tocilizumab group was 17.8%;p=0.58 by log-rank test).The mortality ratio in the placebo group was 76.3%;p=0.32 by log-rank test).The inflammatory markers in the tocilizumab group significantly declined by day 16 compared to the placebo group.Conclusions:The use of tocilizumab was associated with decreased mortality,earlier improvement of inflamma-tory markers,and reduced hospital stay in patients with severe COVID-19.Muhammad Irfan Malik Sardar Al Fareed Zafar Fabiha Qayyum Muna Malik Muhammad Sohaib Asghar Muhammad Junaid Tahir Ammarah Arshad Fatima Khalil Hafiza Shafia Naz Mudassar Aslam Jodat Saleem Abdul Aziz Mustafa Usman Azhar Muhammad Naqash Zohaib Yousaf 2022Infectious Medicine2022,1,2:0
