| 1 | Effects of aeration method and aeration rate on greenhouse gas emissions during composting of pig feces in pilot scale显示文摘The aim of this study was to uncover ways to mitigate greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions and reduce energy consumption during the composting process. We assessed the effects of different aeration rates(0, 0.18, 0.36, and 0.54 L/(kg dry matter(dm)·min)) and methods(continuous and intermittent) on GHG emissions. Pig feces and corn stalks were mixed at a ratio of 7:1. The composting process lasted for 10 weeks, and the compost was turned approximately every 2 weeks. Results showed that both aeration rate and method significantly affected GHG emissions. Higher aeration rates increased NH3 and N2O losses,but reduced CH4 emissions. The exception is that the CH4 emission of the passive aeration treatment was lower than that of the low aeration rate treatment. Without forced aeration,the CH4 diffusion rates in the center of the piles were very low and part of the CH4 was oxidized in the surface layer. Intermittent aeration reduced NH3 and CH4 losses, but significantly increased N2 O production during the maturing periods. Intermittent aeration increased the nitrification/denitrification alternation and thus enhanced the N2 O production. Forced aeration treatments had higher GHG emission rates than the passive aeration treatment. Forced aeration accelerated the maturing process, but could not improve the quality of the end product. Hawaii’s East-West Center in collaboration with the Ohana Foundation implemented an educational re- search activity designed to assess the current needs and best practices for English language teaching and learn- ing at the middle school level in China.The project focused on increasing creativity and innovation in English language education and used case studies of successful English language teaching/learning as the unit of analysis. | 4 | SENSITIVITY OF HURRICANE INTENSITY AND STRUCTURE TO TWO TYPES OF PLANETARY BOUNDARY LAYER PARAMETERIZATION SCHEMES IN IDEALIZED HWRF SIMULATIONS显示文摘This paper investigates the sensitivity of simulated hurricane intensity and structure to two planetary boundary layer(PBL) schemes in the Hurricane Weather and Research Forecast model including 1) the GFS scheme(control run) that uses the K-profile method to parameterize turbulent fluxes, and 2) the MYJ scheme that is based on turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) budget for turbulent closure. Idealized simulations with these two PBL schemes show that the storm in the TKE run is stronger than that in the control run after three days into simulation. Multi-scale structures are evaluated and compared between the control and the TKE runs prior to the divergence of the model-simulated intensity to elucidate the mechanism underlying such a difference in the intensity between the two runs. It is found that the storm in the TKE run has i) a shallower boundary layer with a stronger PBL inflow, ii) stronger boundary layer convergence closer to the storm center, iii) higher vorticity and inertial stability inside the RMW; iv) stronger and deeper updrafts in regions further inward from the radius of maximum wind(RMW), and v) more convective bursts located near the RMW as compared to the control run. | 5 | Impact of an innovative financing and payment model on tuberculosis patients'financial burden:is tuberculosis care more affordable for the poor?显示文摘Background:In response to the high financial burden of health services facing tuberculosis(TB)patients in China,the China-Gates TB project,PhaseⅡ,has implemented a new financing and payment model as an important component of the overall project in three cities in eastern,central and western China.The model focuses on increasing the reimbursement rate for TB patients and reforming provider payment methods by replacing fee-for-service with a case-based payment approach.This study investigated changes in out-of-pocket(OOP)health expenditure and the financial burden on TB patients before and after the interventions,with a focus on potential differential impacts on patients from different income groups.Methods:Three sample counties in each of the three prefectures:Zhenjiang,Yichang and Hanzhong were chosen as study sites.TB patients who started and completed treatment before,and during the intervention period,were randomly sampled and surveyed at the baseline in 2013 and final evaluation in 2015 respectively.OOP health expenditure and percentage of patients incurring catastrophic health expenditure(CHE)were calculated for different income groups.OLS regression and Iogit regression were conducted to explore the intervention's impacts on patient OOP health expenditure and financial burden after adjusting for other covariates.Key-informant interviews and focus group discussions were conducted to understand the reasons for any observed changes.Results:Data from 738(baseline)and 735(evaluation)patients were available for analysis.Patient mean OOP health expenditure increased from RMB 3576 to RMB 5791,and the percentage of patients incurring CHE also increased after intervention.The percentage increase in OOP health expenditure and the likelihood of incurring CHE were significantly lower for patients from the highest income group as compared to the lowest.Qualitative findings indicated that increased use of health services not covered by the standard package of the model was likely to have caused the increase in financial burden.Conclusions:The implementation of the new financing and payment model did not protect patients,especially those from the lowest income group,from financial difficulty,due partly to their increased use of health service.More financial resources should be mobilized to increase financial protection,particularly for poor patients,while cost containment strategies need to be developed and effectively implemented to improve the effective coverage of essential healthcare in China. | Wei-Xi Jiang Qian Long Henry Lucas Di Dong Jia-Ying Chen Li Xiang Qiang Li Fei Huang Hong Wang Chris Elbers Frank Cobelens Sheng-Lan Tang | 2019 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019,8,2: | 4 |
