| 1 | Transitional geology and its effects on development and longwall mining in Pittsburgh Seam显示文摘This paper presents the geologic and ground control challenges that were encountered by Consol Energy's coal mining operations in southwestern Pennsylvania,USA. Geologic encounters,such as sandstoneto-limestone geology transition,massive sandstone channels,shale channels,pyritic rich green claystone,laminated roof,and soft floor,have significantly impacted the development and longwall mining in Consol's Pittsburgh Seam coal mines. Experience from different mines shows that,in the sandstone-to-limestone geology transition zone,1.83 m high-tension,fully-grouted primary bolts employed along with 4.88 m center cable bolts at every other strap greatly improved beam building and ensured proper anchorage into the competent roof. Hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was often necessary to enhance caving of the massive sandstone behind the shields to relieve pressure at the face. The presence of soft floor coupled with presence of thick floor coal and deep cover,induced excessive headgate convergence during retreat of the first right hand longwall panel. In all,it is important to explore the roof and in-seam geology in detail to delineate normal and anomalous geologic conditions prior to and during development. With diligent geologic reconnaissance,geotechnical monitoring,and assessment,site-specific geotechnical solutions have been provided to mine operations to improve safety and productivity. | Lu Jun Van Dyke Mark Su Daniel W.H. | 2 | Left atrial physiology and pathophysiology:Role of deformation imaging显示文摘The left atrium(LA) acts as a modulator of left ventricular(LV) filling. Although there is considerable evidence to support the use of LA maximum and minimum volumes for disease prediction,theoretical considerations and a growing body of literature suggest to focus on the quantification of the three basic LA functions:(1) Reservoir function:collection of pulmonary venous return during LV systole;(2) Conduit function:passage of blood to the left ventricle during early LV diastole; and(3) Contractile booster pump function(augmentation of ventricular filling during late LV diastole. Tremendous advances in our ability to non-invasively characterize all three elements of atrial function include speckle tracking echocardiography(STE),and more recently cardiovascular magnetic resonance myocardial feature tracking(CMR-FT). Corresponding imaging biomarkers are increasingly recognized to have incremental roles in determining prognosis and risk stratification in cardiac dysfunction of different origins. | 4 | Challenges of mining the first right-handed longwall panel in a new reserve block in Pittsburgh Seam显示文摘In this paper, the mining experience and challenges for the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh Seam are introduced. The longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence(up to 61 cm), accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded. Different underground instruments, such as a roof scope, de-gas drill, tell-tale, laser meter,and borehole pressure Cell(BPC), were employed to explore the roof geology and to monitor the entry convergence and the stress changes in the pillar. In addition, the impact of other geologic factors, such as large overburden depth, laminated sandstone roof geology, soft floor, and large headgate equipment,were also analyzed.
