| 1 | Microarray,SAGE and their applications to cardiovascular diseases显示文摘The wealth of DNA data generated by the human genome project coupling with recently invented high-throughput gene expression profiling techniques has dramatically sped up the process for biomedical researchers on elucidating the role of genes in human diseases. One powerful method to reveal insight into gene functions is the systematic analysis of gene expression. Two popular high-throughput gene expression technologies, microarray and Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE) are capable of producing large amounts of gene expression data with the potential of providing novel insights into fundamental disease processes, especially complex syndromes such as cardiovascular disease, whose etiologies are due to multiple genetic factors and their interplay with the environment. Microarray and SAGE have already been used to examine gene expression patterns of cell-culture, animal and human tissues models of cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we will first give a brief introduction of microarray and SAGE technologies and point out their limitations. We will then discuss the major discoveries and the new biological insightsthat have emerged from their applications to cardiovascular diseases. Finally we will touch upon potential challenges and future developments in this area. | SHUI QING YE, TERA LAVOIE, DAVID C USHER, LI Q. | 6 | Modeling and simulation of ion channels and action potentials in taste receptor cells显示文摘Based on patch clamp data on the ionic currents of rat taste receptor cells, a mathematical model of mammalian taste receptor cells was constructed to simulate the action potentials of taste receptor cells and their corresponding ionic components, including voltage-gated Na+ currents and outward delayed rectifier K+ currents. Our simulations reproduced the action potentials of taste receptor cells in response to electrical stimuli or sour tastants. The kinetics of ion channels and their roles in action potentials of taste receptor cells were also analyzed. Our prototype model of single taste receptor cell and simulation results presented in this paper provide the basis for the further study of taste information processing in the gustatory system. | CHEN PeiHua1, LIU Xiao-dong2, ZHANG Wei1, ZHOU Jun1, WANG Ping1, YANG Wei3 & LUO JianHong3 1Biosensor National Special Laboratory, Key Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering of Ministry of Education, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310027, China 2Calcium Signals Lab, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD 21205, USA 3Department of Neurobiology, Institute for Neuroscience, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou 310058, China | 2009 | Science China(Life Sciences)2009,52,11: | 1 |

| 15 | The Degree of Symmetry of Certain Compact Smooth Manifolds II显示文摘We give the sharp estimates for the degree of symmetry and the semi-simple degree of symmetry of certain compact fiber bundles with non-trivial four dimensional fibers in the sense of cobordism, by virtue of the rigidity theorem of harmonic maps due to Schoen and Yau (Topology, 18, 1979, 361-380). As a corollary of this estimate, we compute the degree of symmetry and the semi-simple degree of symmetry of CP2×V, where V is a closed smooth manifold admitting a real analytic Riemannian metric of non-positive curvature. In addition, by the Albanese map, we obtain the sharp estimate of the degree of symmetry of a compact smooth manifold with some restrictions on its one dimensional cohomology. | Bin XU Department of Mathematics, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China Chern Institute of Mathematics, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, China Department of Mathematics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD 21218, USA. | 2007 | Chinese Annals of Mathematics,Series B2007,28,2: | 0 |
| 16 | PROBING THE EARLY UNIVERSE WITH DEEP OBSERVATIONS AND LARGE SURVEYS显示文摘Recent advances in astronomy have enabled scientists to reach the early universe to an unprecedented depth. With the new telescopes such as the Chandra, FUSE, and with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we have gained critical insights into the 'Origin of our Universe', i.e. how the intergalactic medium evolves to form galaxies and quasars. SDSS has broken a ten-year barrier of z=5 to reach the very early universe, with the discovery of five quasars at z 5.0. The survey will find more than ten thousands of quasars, enabling us to carry out the most comprehensive classification of quasars. FUSE finds traces of the primordial matter at z ~3, which corresponds to hydrogen column density as low as 10 -11 cm -2 and cannot be detected even with the largest optical telescope. The finding suggests that the intergalactic medium is an evolving and complex entity, and it is ionized mainly by the accumulated radiation from quasars. The Chandra telescope has taken a million second deep exposure of a selected region, reaching about twenty times deeper than ROSAT to a limiting flux of 5 × 10 -17 ergs s -1 cm -2 in the 0.5-2 keV band. The sources found so far can account for up to 90% of the hard X-ray background field, and they consist of Seyfert-2 and normal galaxies at z < 1 and quasars at z < 4.5. In the near future, the Next Generation Space Telescope and others will reveal the first generation of baryonic objects after the Big Bang. | Zheng Wei (Department of Physics and Astronomy, The Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MD 21218-2686, USA) (Center for Astrophysics University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, AnHui, 230026) | 2001 | 中国科学院上海天文台年刊2001,,1: | 0 |
| 17 | Parameterization of the Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium Source Function with Chemical Production by an Equivalent Two-Level Model显示文摘The classic two-level or equivalent two-level model that includes only the statistical equilibriumof radiative and thermal processes of excitation and quenching between two vibrational energy levelsis extended by adding chemical production to the rate equations. The modifications to the non-localthermodynamic equilibrium source function and cooling rate are parameterized by φc, which characterizesthe ratio of chemical production to collisional quenching. For applications of broadband emission of O3 at9.6 μm, the non-LTE effect of chemical production on the cooling rate and limb emission is proportionalto the ratio of O to O3. For a typical [O]/[O3], the maximum enhancements of limb radiance and coolingrate are about 15%-30% and 0.03-0.05 K day-1, respectively, both occurring near the mesopause regions. This suggests that the broadband limb radiance above ~80 km is sensitive to O3 density but not sensitiveto the direct cooling rate along the line-of-sight, which makes O3 retrieval feasible but the direct coolingrate retrieval difficult by using the O3 9.6 μm band limb emission. | Xun ZHUThe Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, MD 20723-6099, USA | 2003 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2003,20,4: | 0 |
