| 2 | Microscopic colitis:A large retrospective analysis from a health maintenance organization experience显示文摘AIM:To examine the demographic data on a large multi-ethnic population of patients with microscopic colitis (MC) in Southern California and to determine the association of MC with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer.METHODS: All patients diagnosed with MC by colonic biopsy from 1996-2005 were identified utilizing a pathology database. All biopsies were reviewed by experienced pathologists utilizing standard histologic criteria. Patients' medical records were reviewed and data regarding patient age, co-morbidities, sex, ethnicity, and medications were analyzed. An age-and sexmatched standard control group was also generated. Chi-square test was used to evaluate the associations of co-morbidities between lymphocytic colitis (LC), collagenous colitis (CC) and the control group.RESULTS: A total of 547 cases of MC were identif ied,376 patients with LC and 171 patients with CC. The female/male ratio was 3:1 in CC and 2.7:1 in LC patients. Celiac disease (P<0.001), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (P<0.001), and thyroid diseases (P<0.001) were found to have a higher occurrence in MC compared to the control group. No statistical differences in the occurrence of colorectal cancer, diabetes and IBD were found between the MC group and the control group.CONCLUSION: This is the largest group of patients with MC known to the authors that has been studied to date. Conditions such as celiac disease, IBS, and thyroid diseases were found to be related to MC. | 3 | Air quality monitoring using mobile microscopy and machine learning显示文摘Rapid,accurate and high-throughput sizing and quantification of particulate matter(PM)in air is crucial for monitoring and improving air quality.In fact,particles in air with a diameter of≤2.5μm have been classified as carcinogenic by the World Health Organization.Here we present a field-portable cost-effective platform for high-throughput quantification of particulate matter using computational lens-free microscopy and machine-learning.This platform,termed c-Air,is also integrated with a smartphone application for device control and display of results.This mobile device rapidly screens 6.5 L of air in 30 s and generates microscopic images of the aerosols in air.It provides statistics of the particle size and density distribution with a sizing accuracy of~93%.We tested this mobile platform by measuring the air quality at different indoor and outdoor environments and measurement times,and compared our results to those of an Environmental Protection Agency–approved device based on beta-attenuation monitoring,which showed strong correlation to c-Air measurements.Furthermore,we used c-Air to map the air quality around Los Angeles International Airport(LAX)over 24 h to confirm that the impact of LAX on increased PM concentration was present even at 47 km away from the airport,especially along the direction of landing flights.With its machinelearning-based computational microscopy interface,c-Air can be adaptively tailored to detect specific particles in air,for example,various types of pollen and mold and provide a cost-effective mobile solution for highly accurate and distributed sensing of air quality. | Yi-Chen Wu Ashutosh Shiledar Yi-Cheng Li Jeffrey Wong Steve Feng Xuan Chen Christine Chen Kevin Jin Saba Janamian Zhe Yang Zachary Scott Ballard Zoltán Göröcs Alborz Feizi Aydogan Ozcan | 2017 | Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1: | 5 |

| 5 | Intravitreal stem cell paracrine properties as a potential neuroprotective therapy for retinal photoreceptor neurodegenerative diseases显示文摘Retinal degenerations are the leading causes of irreversible visual loss worldwide. Many pathologies included under this umbrella involve progressive degeneration and ultimate loss of the photoreceptor cells, with age-related macular degeneration and inherited and ischemic retinal diseases the most relevant. These diseases greatly impact patients' daily lives, with accompanying marked social and economic consequences. However, the currently available treatments only delay the onset or slow progression of visual impairment, and there are no cures for these photoreceptor diseases. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are being investigated, such as gene therapy, optogenetics, cell replacement, or cell-based neuroprotection. Specifically, stem cells can secrete neurotrophic, immunomodulatory, and anti-angiogenic factors that potentially protect and preserve retinal cells from neurodegeneration. Further, neuroprotection can be used in different types of retinal degenerative diseases and at different disease stages, unlike other potential therapies. This review summarizes stem cell-based paracrine neuroprotective strategies for photoreceptor degeneration, which are under study in clinical trials, and the latest preclinical studies. | 6 | White matter hyperintensity progression is associated with incident probable dementia or mild cognitive impairment显示文摘Background White matter hyperintensity(WMH)on brain MRI is associated with developing dementia or mild cognitive impairment(MCI),but WMH progression over time has not been fully investigated as an independent risk factor.Methods We performed a post hoc analysis of the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial-Memory and Cognition in Decreased Hypertension(SPRINT MIND)trial.The primary outcome was incident probable dementia or MCI(dementia/MCI)before the follow-up MRI at 48 months from enrolment.The primary predictor was WMH progression,defined as the Z score difference between the follow-up and baseline WMH volumes.The secondary predictor was a binary WMH progression threshold(≥1.4 mL vs<1.4 mL).Results Among the 433 included patients,33(7.6%)developed dementia/MCI.There were 156(36.0%)patients who met the WMH progression threshold of≥1.4 mL,in whom the rate of dementia/MCI was 12.8%(20/156)vs 4.7%(13/277)of patients with<1.4 mL WMH progression(p=0.002).In multivariable logistic regression,the Z score of WMH progression was associated with dementia/MCI(OR 1.51,95%CI 1.12 to 2.04,p=0.007)as was the WMH progression threshold of≥1.4 mL(OR 2.89,95%CI 1.23 to 6.81,p=0.015).Conclusions In this post hoc analysis of SPRINT MIND,WMH progression over 48 months was associated with the development of probable dementia or MCI. | Adam de Havenon Kevin N Sheth Sharon D Yeatts Tanya N Turan Shyam Prabhakaran | 2022 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2022,7,4: | 2 |

METHODS: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded gas-trointestinal biopsy blocks from patients (n = 48) with non-inflammatory bowel disease (irritable bowel syndrome and functional abdominal pain) and inflammatory bowel disease were sectioned and stained for IL-6, mast cells, enterochromaffin cells, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and substance P. All children had chronic abdominal pain as part of their presenting symptoms. Biopsy phenotype was confirmed by a pathologist, blinded to patient information. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and independent sample t tests were used to compare differences between the inflammatory and non-inflammatory groups. RESULTS: The cohort (n = 48), mean age 11.9 years (SD = 2.9), 54.2% females, 90% Caucasian, was comprised of a non-inflammatory (n = 26) and an inflammatory (n = 22) phenotype. There was a significant negative correlation between substance P expression and mast cell count (P = 0.05, r = -0.373). Substance P was found to be expressed more often in female patient biopsies and more intensely in the upper gastrointestinal mucosa as compared to the lower mucosa. There were significantly increased gastrointestinal mucosal immunoreactivity to IL-6 (P = 0.004) in the inflammatory phenotype compared to non-inflammatory. Additionally, we found significantly increased mast cells (P = 0.049) in the mucosa of the non-inflammatory phenotype compared to the inflammatory group. This difference was particularly noted in the lower colon biopsies.
