| 5 | Dynamics of phosphorus in sediments of a naturally acidic lake显示文摘The mechanisms which controls the fixation and/or release of P in sediment of an extremely acidic lake(pH = 2.0 to 3.0) and its response to the influence of eutrophic urban waste water were investigated.The results,in the chemical composition,in the mineralogy of the sediment and in the material as obtained from sediment traps,show that the lake sediments are mainly volcanic material reflecting volcanic features of the basin.The sedimentation rate calculated for the lake(2.5×10^(-2) mg m^(-2) day^(-1)) was higher than that observed in other similar glacial lakes in both Andean Patagonia and also elsewhere in the world.The Total Phosphorus concentration in sediments was higher than figures reported by other authors for mining acid lakes,and the main fraction of P was found associated with organic matter.There was no control by Fe or Al on P,because both are in solution at pH < 3.0.It was concluded that changes in the natural input of nutrients(derivatives of Copahue volcano fluid,the discharge of sewage,or basin run-off) are responsible for a high concentration of SRP and N-NH_4^+ in the lake.Laboratory experiments showed that sediments have no ability to retain phosphorus and a continuous release of P from the sediments into the water column was observed.The assays where the pH was artificially increased showed that the P still remains in solution until at least pH 7.0.It was concluded that changes in the natural input of nutrients due to:1) the volcanic fluids,2) the increase in sewage charges,or 3) surface runoff upstream,maintain a high trophic state with high concentrations of dissolved P and N-NH_4^+,although the threshold of neutral pH in the lake is exceeded.This study will enable a better understanding about of the mechanism of release/fixation of phosphorus in acidic sediments in order to assist in making decisions regarding the conservation and management of this natural environment. | Temporetti PEDRO Snodgrass KIMBERLEY Pedrozo FERNANDO | 2013 | International Journal of Sediment Research2013,28,1: | 6 |

| 7 | Effects of insulin and pathway inhibitors on the PI3K-Akt- mTOR phosphorylation profile in acute myeloid leukemia cells显示文摘The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K)-Akt-mechanistic target of rapamycin(mTOR)pathway is constitutively activated in human acute myeloid leukemia(AML)cells and is regarded as a possible therapeutic target.Insulin is an agonist of this pathway and a growth factor for AML cells.We characterized the effect of insulin on the phosphorylation of 10 mediators in the main track of the PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway in AML cells from 76 consecutive patients.The overall results showed that insulin significantly increased the phosphorylation of all investigated mediators.However,insulin effects on the pathway activation profile varied among patients,and increased phosphorylation in all mediators was observed only in a minority of patients;in other patients,insulin had divergent effects.Global gene expression profiling and proteomic/phosphoproteomic comparisons suggested that AML cells from these two patient subsets differed with regard to AML cell differentiation,transcriptional regulation,RNA metabolism,and cellular metabolism.Strong insulin-induced phosphorylation was associated with weakened antiproliferative effects of metabolic inhibitors.PI3K,Akt,and mTOR inhibitors also caused divergent effects on the overall pathway phosphorylation profile in the presence of insulin,although PI3K and Akt inhibition caused a general reduction in Akt pT308 and 4EBP1 pT36/pT45 phosphorylation.For Akt inhibition,the phosphorylation of upstream mediators was generally increased or unaltered.In contrast,mTOR inhibition reduced mTOR pS2448 and S6 pS244 phosphorylation but increased Akt pT308 phosphorylation.In conclusion,the effects of both insulin and PI3K-Akt-mTOR inhibitors differ between AML patient subsets,and differences in insulin responsiveness are associated with differential susceptibility to metabolic targeting. | Ina Nepstad Kimberley Joanne Hatfield Ida Sofie Grønningsæter Elise Aasebø Maria Hernandez-Valladares Karen Marie Hagen Kristin Paulsen Rye Frode SBerven Frode Selheim Håkon Reikvam Øystein Bruserud | 2019 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2019,4,1: | 4 |
| 8 | The effect of acute aerobic exercise on central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics in adults with diabetes:A randomized cross-over design显示文摘Background:Individuals with diabetes have greater central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics,all of which promote the accelerated cardiovascular pathology seen in this population.Acute aerobic exercise has been shown to be an effective strategy for reducing central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics in healthy individuals;however,the effects of acute aerobic exercise in reducing these outcomes is not well established in people with diabetes.Recently,implementation of high-intensity interval exercise(HIIE)has shown superior improvements in cardiovascular health outcomes when compared to traditional aerobic exercise.Yet,the effect of HIIE on the aforementioned outcomes in people with diabetes is not known.The purpose of this study was to(i)describe the central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamic responses to a bout of HIIE and moderate-intensity continuous exercise(MICE)in adults with diabetes;and(ii)compare the effects of HIIE and MICE on the aforementioned outcomes.Methods:A total of 24 adult men and women(aged 29-59 years old)with type 1(n=12)and type 2(n=12)diabetes participated in a randomized cross-over study.All participants completed the following protocols:(i)HIIE:cycling for 4×4 min at 85%-95%of heart rate peak(HR_(peak)),interspersed with 3 min of active recovery at 60%-70%HR_(peak);(ii)MICE:33 min of continuous cycling at 60%-70%HR_(peak);and(iii)control(CON):lying quietly in a supine position for 30 min.Results:A significant group£time effect was found for changes in central systolic blood pressure(F=3.20,p=0.01)with a transient reduction for the HIIE group but not for the MICE or CON groups.There was a significant group£time effect for changes in augmentation index at a heart rate of 75 beats/min(F=2.32,p=0.04)with a decrease following for HIIE and MICE but not for CON.For all other measures of central arterial stiffness and hemodynamics,no significant changes were observed(p>0.05).Conclusion:A bout of HIIE appears to lead to a greater transient reduction in central systolic blood pressure than the reduction observed following MICE;however,both HIIE and MICE improved augmentation index at a heart rate of 75 beats/min in people with diabetes.There was no significant difference in response to HIIE and MICE in all outcomes.This provides preliminary evidence on the role of HIIE on such outcomes in people with diabetes. | Kimberley L.Way Angela S.Lee Stephen M.Twigg Nathan A.Johnson | 2021 | Journal of Sport and Health Science2021,10,4: | 4 |

| 10 | Effect of dietary fiber and threonine content on intestinal barrier function in pigs challenged with either systemic E.coli lipopolysaccharide or enteric Salmonella Typhimurium显示文摘Background:The independent and interactive effects of dietary fiber(DF)and threonine(Thr)were investigated in growing pigs challenged with either systemic E.coli lipopolysaccharide(LPS)or enteric Salmonella Typhimurium(ST)to characterise their effect on intestinal barrier function.Results:In experiment 1,intestinal barrier function was assessed via oral lactulose and mannitol(L:M)gavage and fecal mucin analysis in pigs challenged with E.coli LPS and fed low fiber(LF)or high fiber(HF)diets with graded dietary Thr.Urinary lactulose recovery and L:M ratio increased(P<0.05)during the LPS inoculation period in LF fed pigs but not in HF fed pigs.Fecal mucin output was increased(P<0.05)in pigs fed HF compared to LF fed pigs.In experiment 2,RT-qPCR,ileal morphology,digesta volatile fatty acid(VFA)content,and fecal mucin output were measured in Salmonella Typhimurium challenged pigs,fed LF or HF diets with standard or supplemented dietary Thr.Salmonella inoculation increased(P<0.05)fecal mucin output compared to the unchallenged period.Supplemental Thr increased fecal mucin output in the HF-fed pigs(Fib×Thr;P<0.05).Feeding HF increased(P<0.05)VFA concentration in cecum and colon.No effect of either Thr or fiber on expression of gene markers was observed except a tendency(P=0.06)for increased MUC2 expression with the HF diet.Feeding HF increased goblet cell numbers(P<0.05).Conclusion:Dietary fiber appears to improve barrier function through increased mucin production capacity(i.e.,goblet cell numbers,MUC2 gene expression)and secretion(i.e.,fecal mucin output).The lack of effect of dietary Thr in Salmonella-challenged pigs provides further evidence that mucin secretion in the gut is conserved and,therefore,Thr may be limiting for growth under conditions of increased mucin production. | Michael O.Wellington Kimberley Hamonic Jack E.C.Krone John K.Htoo Andrew G.Van Kessel Daniel A.Columbus | 2020 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2020,11,3: | 3 |

| 14 | Distal triceps injuries(including snapping triceps):A systematic review of the literature显示文摘AIM To review current literature on types of distal triceps injuryand determine diagnosis and appropriate management.METHODS We performed a systematic review in PubM ed, Cochrane and EMBASE using the terms distal triceps tears and snapping triceps on the 10 th January 2017. We excluded all animal, review, foreign language and repeat papers. We reviewed all papers for relevance and of the papers left we were able to establish the types of distal triceps injury, how these injuries are diagnosed and investigated and the types of management of these injuries including surgical. The results are then presented in a review paper format.RESULTS Three hundred and seventy-nine papers were identified of which 65 were relevant to distal triceps injuries. After exclusion we had 47 appropriate papers. The papers highlighted 2 main distal triceps injuries: Distal triceps tears and snapping triceps. Triceps tear are more common in males than females occurring in the 4th-5th decade of life and often due to a direct trauma but are also strongly associated with weightlifting and American football. The tears are diagnosed by history and clinically with a palpable gap. Diagnosis can be confirmed with the use of ultrasound(US) and magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment depends on type of tear. Partial tears can be treated conservatively with bracing and physio whereas acute tears need repair either open or arthroscopic using suture anchor or bone tunnel techniques with similar success. Chronic tears often need augmenting with tendon allograft or autograft. Snapping triceps are also seen more in men than women but at a mean age of 32 years. They are characterized by a snapping sensation mostly medially and can be associated with ulna nerve subluxation and ulna nerve symptoms. US is the diagnostic modality of choice due to its dynamic nature and to differentiate between snapping triceps tendon or ulna nerve. Treatment is conservative initially with activity avoidance and if that fails surgical management includes resection of triceps edge or transposition of the tendon plus or minusulna nerve transposition.CONCLUSION Distal triceps injuries are uncommon. | 16 | Impact and risk factors of post-stroke bone fracture显示文摘Bone fracture occurs in stroke patients at different times during the recovery phase, prolonging recovery time and increasing medical costs. In this review, we discuss the potential risk factors for post-stroke bone fracture and preventive methods. Most post-stroke bone fractures occur in the lower extremities, indicating fragile bones are a risk factor. Motor changes, including posture, mobility, and balance post-stroke contribute to bone loss and thus increase risk of bone fracture. Bone mineral density is a useful indicator for bone resorption, useful to identify patients at risk of post-stroke bone fracture. Calcium supplementation was previously regarded as a useful treatment during physical rehabilitation. However, recent data suggests calcium supplementation has a negative impact on atherosclerotic conditions. Vitamin D intake may prevent osteoporosis and fractures in patients with stroke.
