1A review of electromagnetic processing of materials(EPM):Heating,sintering,joining and forming显示文摘Electricity is an efficient form of energy,and the growing interest in electricity-assisted manufacturing is motivated by its inherent energy saving and reduced environmental impact.Beyond this,Electromagnetic Processing of Materials(EPM)allows the fabrication of materials with new compositions,metastable phases and nanograined microstructures that cannot be obtained using conventional heating processes using furnaces.This review covers EPM for the manufacture of ceramic and metal bulk components,with a specific focus on the effects of electric fields and electromagnetic radiations on processing in a wide spectrum of frequencies ranging from DC(f=0 Hz)to visible light(f=10^(14)–10^(15)Hz).The manuscript is divided into two parts.The first part provides a comprehensive overview of the interactions between matter and electric field/current,including heating phenomena(resistive Joule,induction,dielectric heating,electric arcs)and athermal effects(electromigration,electroplasticity,electrochemical reactions,ponderomotive force and others).The second part is focused on the technological application of the techniques,covering heat treatments,joining,sintering and forming.Seven distinct physical phenomena are involved in EPM:resistive Joule and induction heating,electrochemical reactions,electroplasticity,electric arcs and electromagnetic heating based on radio and microwave frequencies(mainly used for heating dielectric materials;i.e.,dielectric heating)or on the IR/visible light(IR heating and lasers).Mattia Biesuz Theo Saunders Daoyao Ke Michael J.Reece Chungfeng Hu Salvatore Grasso 2021Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,10:4
2High-entropy(Ca_(0.2)Sr_(0.2)Ba_(0.2)La_(0.2)Pb_(0.2))TiO_(3) perovskite ceramics with A-site short-range disorder for thermoelectric applications显示文摘Novel high-entropy perovskite-type(Ca_(0.2)Sr_(0.2)Ba_(0.2)La_(0.2)Pb_(0.2))TiO_(3)(CSBLP)ceramics with cubic structure of Pm-3 m space group were successful prepared by solid-state reaction method.Results of XRD,SEM-EDS,HRTEM confirmed a homogeneous distribution and equimolar arrangement of multicomponent cations on the A-site.The high-entropy CSBLP ceramics showed long-range structural order and short-range chemical disorder with widely dispersed nanoscale grains varying sizes of 4-6 nm in the microstructure.Because of increased configurational entropy,the CSBLP ceramic has an enhanced Seebeck coefficient(|S|=272μV/K at 1073 K)and low thermal conductivity(k=1.75 W/m·K at 1073 K)when annealed at1300℃.This work demonstrates the possibility of effectively reducing thermal conductivity and improving the performance of thermoelectric oxides through high-entropy composition design.Ping Zhang Zhihao Lou Mengjie Qin Jie Xu Jiatong Zhu Zongmo Shi Qian Chen Michael J.Reece Haixue Yan Feng Gao 2022Journal of Materials Science & Technology2022,,2:3
3Carbon deficiency introduced plasticity of rock-salt-structured transition metal carbides显示文摘High-hardness rock-salt structured transitional metal carbides(TMC)are attracting substantial interest as potential next-generation thermal protection materials.However,the intrinsic brittleness of TMC ceramics impedes their performance in aerodynamically harsh environments.In this work,a promising strategy is proposed to introduce plasticity in TaC–HfC solid solutions by manipulating carbon deficiency.The approach combines density-functional theory(DFT)with experiments and takes Pugh's ratio(k)as the criteria.Depletion of carbon atoms in TaC–HfC solid solutions results in the de-localizing of valence electrons,deviation of spatial modulus along different crystal plane directions,and leading to significant elastic anisotropy.The carbon deficient Ta_(0.8)Hf_(0.2)C_(0.8) is predicted to be a‘softer phase’with reduced modulus and Pugh's ratio(k=0.58).A series of Ta1–xHfxCy(x=0.2 and 0.8,y=0.8,0.9,and 1.0)bulk ceramics are experimentally fabricated by an excessive metal alloying method.Trigonal and hexagonal close-packed structured carbides are derived when the carbon deficiency y decreased to 0.7.The indentation modulus drops from 641.8±14.8 GPa for Ta_(0.8)Hf_(0.2)C_(1.0) to 555.8±9.9 GPa for Ta0.8Hf0.2C0.8.The specific stoichiometric composition of Ta_(0.8)Hf_(0.2)C_(0.8) is experimentally verified to possess both plasticity(k=0.41)and ultra-high nanohardness(41.3±1.3 GPa).Buhao Zhang Youwei Wang Jie Yin Yichen Wang Hangfeng Zhang Tamás Csanádi Ján Dusza Michael J.Reece Nan Lin Xiao Yang Xuejian Liu Zhengren Huang Dongliang Jiang 2023Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,33:0
4Ablation behaviour of(Hf-Ta-Zr-Nb)C high entropy carbide ceramic at temperatures above 2100℃显示文摘The ablation behaviour of(Hf-Ta-Zr-Nb)C high entropy carbide(HEC4)was studied at temperatures above 2100℃using a plasma flame gun in air.The microstructures,phase and chemical compositions of the HEC4 samples were investigated after ablation.The mass ablation rate of the HEC4 samples increased with increasing ablation time from 0.21 mg cm^(−2)s^(−1)for 60 s to 0.45 mg cm^(−2)s^(−1)for 120 s.Com-pared to the mono-and binary carbides with commonly decreased mass and thickness after ablation,the HEC4 samples with the increased mass and thickness after ablation showed good resistance to mechan-ical scouring at such high temperatures and an oxidation controlled ablation mechanism.The ablation processes mainly include the oxidation of the carbide,the phase separation of the oxides,the melting of oxides,and the diffusion of oxygen.A composition gradient in the oxide layer was detected due to the different melting temperatures of the different oxides;Nb-Ta rich oxides formed at the front surface melted and became enriched at the edge of the samples,and the Zr-Hf rich oxides were enriched in the centre of the samples.The oxide layer with complex compositions and phase distributions acted as an effective ablation barrier.Yichen Wang Buhao Zhang Chengyu Zhang Jie Yin Michael J.Reece 2022Journal of Materials Science & Technology2022,,18:0
5Effects of zinc substitution on the dielectric properties of Ca_(5)Nb_(4)TiO_(17) microwave ceramics显示文摘Ca_(5)Nb_(4)TiO_(17) ceramics with 0≤x≤0.4 were prepared through a solid-state reaction method.Effects of zinc substitution on sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of Ca_(5)Nb_(4)TiO_(17) ceramics were investigated.The sintering temperature was significantly lowered from 1480℃for pure Ca_(5)Nb_(4)TiO_(17) to 1260℃ for x=0.4.The microwave dielectric properties are strongly correlated with the composition.It is worth noting that the temperature cofficient of resonant frequency(τf)displays a tendency toward positive value,ranging from-126.4 ppm/℃ to-8.6 ppm/℃.A temperature stable microwave ceramic with dielectric constant of 52 and Q×f value of 9937GHz is achieved at x=0.4 and is a potential candidate for application as cores in dielectrically loaded antennas.Chunchun Li Xiaoyong Wei Haixue Yan Michael J.Reece 2013Journal of Advanced Dielectrics2013,3,4:0

7Low-cost Free-standing ferroelectric polymer films with high polarization produced via pressing-and-folding显示文摘Ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF)shows excellent electro-activity and is promising for flexible electronic devices.However,the processing of PVDF into the favourable ferroelectric structure(β-phase)presents difficulties,while its copolymer with trifluoroethylene(PVDF-TrFE)can directly crystallize into β-phase,but shows limited thermal stability and high-cost processing.As a result,an easily implementable method,pressing-and-folding(P&F),was used to produce highly compatible blended films of PVDF and PVDF-TrFE without using any hazardous solvent or complex polymer processing equipment.Hot-pressed PVDF(molecular weight:530 kg/mol)and PVDF-TrFE(molar ratio:51/49)films were firstly stacked before undergoing P&F treatment.Compared to extrusion-blended films before and after P&F,the P&F stacked films showed isotropic crystalline structure of b-phase,as confirmed using X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy.The ferroelectric remnant polarization of the P&F stacked films is 0.068 C/m^(2),surpassing pure PVDF-TrFE(0.062 C/m^(2))and the simulated value of remnant polarization of pure PVDF(~0.065 C/m^(2)).The above findings promise to provide inspirations for new processing strategy on PVDF-based functional polymers.Nan Meng Xintong Ren Jiyue Wu Emiliano Bilotti Michael J.Reece Haixue Yan 2022Journal of Materiomics2022,8,3:0
