| 2 | Etiology and portal vein thrombosis in Budd-Chiari syndrome显示文摘AIM: To research the etiology, portal vein thrombosis and other features of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) patients prospectively. METHODS: A total of 75 patients (40 female, 35 male) who were diagnosed between January 2002 and July 2004 as having BCS were studied prospectively. Findings from on physical examination, ultrasonography, duplex ultrasonography and venography were analyzed. Hemogram and blood chemistry were studied at the time of diagnosis and on each hospital visit. Bone marrow examination and immune phenotyping were performed by a hematologist when necessary. Protein C, S, antithrombin Ⅲ, activated protein C resistance, and anticardiolipin antibodies, antinuclear antibodies, and anti ds-DNA were studied twice. The presence of ascite, esophageal varices, and portal thrombosis were evaluated at admission and on every visit. RESULTS: At least one etiological factor was determined in 54 (72%) of the patients. The etiology could not be defined in 21 (28%) patients. One etiological factor was found in 39, 2 factors in 14 and 3 factors in 1 patient. The most common cause was the web (16%), the second was Hydatid disease (11%), the third was Behcet’s disease (9%). Portal vein thrombosis was present in 11 patients and at least one etiology was identified in 9 of them (82%). CONCLUSION: Behcet’s disease and hydatid disease are more prominent etiological factors in Turkey than in other countries. | 3 | Interaction between seed size and NaCl on germination and early seedling growth of some Turkish cultivars of chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.)显示文摘Chickpea is an important food legume crop of Turkey and is largely grown for human consumption on low moisture or salt-affected soils. The objective of the study was to find the effects of NaCl stress at electrical conductivities of 4.5,8.6,12.7 and 16.3 dS/m and seed sizes(7,8 and 9 mm) on germination and early seedling growth of three popular chickpea cultivars(AKN-97,Gokce and Uzunlu-99). Mean frequency of germination,germination time,germination index,root length,shoot length and seedling fresh weight showed seed size-dependent responses of cultivars to salt stress. In general,small seeds germinated and grew more rapidly compared to medium and large seeds of the same cultivars against all levels of salt stress,with the best results in cultivar Uzunlu-99. No effect of NaCl treatments was observed on frequency of germination;however,a drastic decrease in early seedling growth was recorded at increased NaCl concentrations. Regression analysis results showed a significantly positive rela-tionship(P<0.01) between seed size and mean germination time,whereas a significantly negative relationship was recorded between seed size and germination index,root length,shoot length. Moreover,linear regression values apparently confirmed that increased seed size in each cultivar affected decreased germination index,root and shoot lengths with enhanced mean germination time. | 4 | Nigella sativa relieves the deleterious effects of ischemia reperfusion injury on liver显示文摘AIM: To determine whether Nigella sativa prevents hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury to the liver. METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into three groups as sham (Group 1), control (Group 2), and Nigella sati-va (NS) treatment group (Group 3). All rats underwent hepatic ischemia for 45 min followed by 60 min period of reperfusion. Rats were intraperitoneally infused with only 0.9% saline solution in group 2. Rats in group 3 received NS (0.2 mL/kg) intraperitoneally, before isch-emia and before reperfusion. Blood samples and liver tissues were harvested from the rats, and then the rats were sacrifi ced. Serum aspartate aminotransfera-se (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were determined. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), total oxida-tive status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and my-eloperoxidase (MPO) in hepatic tissue were measured. Also liver tissue histopathology was evaluated by light microscopy. RESULTS: The levels of liver enzymes in group 3 weresignifi cantly lower than those in the group 2. TAC in liver tissue was significantly higher in group 3 than in group 2. TOS, OSI and MPO in hepatic tissue were signifi cantly lower in group 3 than the group 2. Histo-logical tissue damage was milder in the NS treatment group than that in the control group. | 5 | Effects of glutamine and curcumin on bacterial translocation in jaundiced rats显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of curcumin on bacterial translocation and oxidative damage in an obstructive jaundice model and compare the results to glutamine, an agent known to be effective and clinically used. METHODS: Twenty-four female Wistar-Albino rats, weighing 200-250 g, were randomly divided into three groups (8 in each group). After ligation of the common bile duct in all animals, GroupⅠ received oral normal saline, Group Ⅱ received oral glutamine and Group Ⅲ received oral curcumin for seven days. Blood samples via cardiac puncture, tissue samples (terminal ileum, liver and mesenteric lymph node) and peritoneal fluid were obtained from the animals at the time of death to investigate bacterial translocation and oxidative damage. RESULTS: We observed that both glutamine and curcumin reduced bacterial translocation in blood, hepatocellular damage, plasma cytokine levels, oxidative tissue damage and apoptosis significantly compared to the control group. Additionally, glutamine showed protective effects on ileal epithelium and reduced villus atrophy. | 6 | Relationship between diabetic polyneuropathy, serum visfatin, and oxidative stress biomarkers显示文摘BACKGROUND Diabetic polyneuropathy is a very common complication of diabetes.Numerous studies are available in terms of pathogenesis.But examination methods with low reliability are still not standardized and generally time consuming.Highsensitive,easy-to-access methods are expected.Biochemical markers are one of the subjects of research.We aimed to discover a potential biomarker that can be used for this purpose in patients with diabetes who have not yet developed symptoms of neuropathy.AIM To determine the place and availability of visfatin and thiol-disulfide homeostasis in this disorder.METHODS A total of 392 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included in the study.The polyneuropathy clinical signs were evaluated with the Subjective Peripheral Neuropathy Screen Questionnaire and Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument questionnaire and examination.The biochemical parameters,oxidative stress markers,visfatin,and thiol-disulfide homeostasis were analyzed and correlated with each other and clinical signs.RESULTS Subjective Peripheral Neuropathy Screen Questionnaire and Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument questionnaire with examination scores were correlated with each other and diabetes duration(P<0.005).Neuropathy related symptoms were present in 20.7%of the patients,but neuropathy related findings were observed in 43.9%of the patients.Serum glucose,glycated hemoglobin,and visfatin were positively correlated with each other.Also,these parameters were positively correlated with the total oxidative stress index.Total and native thiol was positively correlated with total antioxidant status and negatively with oxidant status.Inversely thiol-disulfide positively correlated with higher glucose and oxidant status and negatively with total antioxidant status(P<0.005).There was no correlation between visfatin and thiol-disulphide(P=0.092,r=0.086).However,a significant negative correlation was observed between visfatin and total with native thiol(P<0.005,r=-0.338),(P<0.005,r=-0.448).CONCLUSION Diagnosis of neuropathy is one of the issues studied in patients with diabetes.Visfatin and thiol-disulfide balance were analyzed for the first time in this study with inspiring results. | Banu Buyukaydin Eray Metin Guler Tahsin Karaaslan Atilla Olgac Mehmet Zorlu Muharrem Kiskac Abdurrahim Kocyigit | 2020 | World Journal of Diabetes2020,11,7: | 2 |
| 7 | Effect of sintering temperature on pore ratio and mechanical properties of composite structure in nano graphene reinforced ZA27 based composites显示文摘Nano graphene platelet(Gr)reinforced nano composites with a zinc–aluminum alloy(ZA27)matrix were produced by powder metallurgy at four different mass ratios(0.5wt%,1.0wt%,2.0wt%and 4.0wt%)and three different sintering temperatures(425,450,and 475°C).In order to investigate the effect of sintering temperatures and nano graphene reinforcement materials on the composite structure,the microstructures of the composite samples were investigated and their densities were determined with a scanning electron microscope.Hardness,transverse rupture,and abrasion wear tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties.According to the test results,the porosity increased and the mechanical strength of the nano composites decreased as the amount of nano graphene reinforcement in ZA27 increased.However,when the composites produced in different reinforcement ratios were evaluated,the increase in sintering temperature increased the mechanical structure by positively affecting the composite structure. | Muharrem Pul | 2020 | International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2020,27,2: | 2 |
| 8 | Assessment of clinical and pathological features of patients who underwent thyroid surgery: A retrospective clinical study显示文摘AIM To evaluate whether there was any correlation between the clinical parameters and final pathological results among patients who underwent thyroid surgery. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed parameters, including age, sex, complete blood cell count parameters, nodule diameter, nodule localization, thyroid function testing, and pathology reports, in patients who underwent thyroid surgery. The patients were divided into malignant (n = 92) and benign (n = 413) groups depending on the final pathological results. Both groups were compared for demographic and clinicalparameters. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test was used to determine if the quantitative variables had a normal distribution. The nonparametric MannWhitney U test was used to compare quantitative data that were not normally distributed, and Pearson's chisquared test was used to compare the qualitative data. The correlation between the final pathological results and fine-needle aspiration biopsy findings was calculated using the cross-tabulation method.RESULTS This study included 406 women and 99 men aged between 15 and 85 years. No significant differences were found between the groups with respect to age, sex, white blood cell count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, thrombocyte count, red cell distribution width, platelet distribution width, mean platelet volume, platecrit, nodule localization, and thyroid function testing. On the other hand, there were significant differences between the groups with respect to nodule size (P = 0.001), cervical lymphadenopathy(P = 0.0001) and nodular calcification (P = 0.0001). Compared with the malignant group, the benign group had a significantly greater nodule size (35.4 mm vs 27.6 mm). The best cut-off point (≤ 28 mm) for nodule size, as determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve, had a sensitivity and specificity of 67.7% and 64.4%, respectively. The correlation between fine-needle aspiration biopsy and the final pathological results was assessed using the cross-table method.
