1Unnormalized and normalized forms of gefura measures in directed and undirected networks显示文摘In some networks nodes belong to predefined groups(e.g.,authors belong to institutions).Common network centrality measures do not take this structure into account.Gefura measures are designed as indicators of a node's brokerage role between such groups.They are defined as variants of betweenness centrality and consider to what extent a node belongs to shortest paths between nodes from different groups.In this article we make the following new contributions to their study:(1) We systematically study unnormalized gefura measures and show that,next to the ‘structural' normalization that has hitherto been applied,a ‘basic' normalization procedure is possible.While the former normalizes at the level of groups,the latter normalizes at the level of nodes.(2) Treating undirected networks as equivalent to symmetric directed networks,we expand the definition of gefura measures to the directed case.(3) It is shown how Brandes' algorithm for betweenness centrality can be adjusted to cover these cases.Raf GUNS Ronald ROUSSEAU 2015Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering2015,16,4:6
2The Flemish Performance-based Research Funding System: A Unique Variant of the Norwegian Model显示文摘The BOF-key is the performance-based research funding system that is used in Flanders, Belgium. In this paper we describe the historical background of the system, its current design and organization, as well as its effects on the Flemish higher education landscape. The BOFkey in its current form relies on three bibliometric parameters: publications in Web of Science, citations in Web of Science, and publications in a comprehensive regional database for SSH publications. Taken together, the BOF-key forms a unique variant of the Norwegian model: while the system to a large extent relies on a commercial database, it avoids the problem of inadequate coverage of the SSH. Because the bibliometric parameters of the BOF-key are reused in other funding allocation schemes, their overall importance to the Flemish universities is substantial.Tim C.E.Engels Raf Guns 2018Journal of Data and Information Science2018,3,4:4

5National Lists of Scholarly Publication Channels: An Overview and Recommendations for Their Construction and Maintenance显示文摘Purpose: This paper presents an overview of different kinds of lists of scholarly publication channels and of experiences related to the construction and maintenance of national lists supporting performance-based research funding systems. It also contributes with a set of recommendations for the construction and maintenance of national lists of journals and book publishers.Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on analysis of previously published studies, policy papers, and reported experiences related to the construction and use of lists of scholarly publication channels. Findings: Several countries have systems for research funding and/or evaluation, that involve the use of national lists of scholarly publication channels(mainly journals and publishers). Typically, such lists are selective(do not include all scholarly or non-scholarly channels) and differentiated(distinguish between channels of different levels and quality). At the same time, most lists are embedded in a system that encompasses multiple or all disciplines. This raises the question how such lists can be organized and maintained to ensure that all relevant disciplines and all types of research are adequately represented. Research limitation: The conclusions and recommendations of the study are based on the authors' interpretation of a complex and sometimes controversial process with many different stakeholders involved.Practical implications: The recommendations and the related background information provided in this paper enable mutual learning that may feed into improvements in the construction and maintenance of national and other lists of scholarly publication channels in any geographical context. 6Predictive Characteristics of Co-authorship Networks: Comparing the Unweighted, Weighted, and Bipartite Cases显示文摘Purpose: This study aims to answer the question to what extent different types of networks can be used to predict future co-authorship among authors.Design/methodology/approach: We compare three types of networks: unweighted networks, in which a link represents a past collaboration; weighted networks, in which links are weighted by the number of joint publications; and bipartite author-publication networks. The analysis investigates their relation to positive stability, as well as their potential in predicting links in future versions of the co-authorship network. Several hypotheses are tested.Findings: Among other results, we find that weighted networks do not automatically lead to better predictions. Bipartite networks, however, outperform unweighted networks in almost all cases.Research limitations: Only two relatively small case studies are considered.Practical implications: The study suggests that future link prediction studies on co-occurrence networks should consider using the bipartite network as a training network.Originality/value: This is the first systematic comparison of unweighted, weighted, and bipartite training networks in link prediction.Raf Guns 2016Journal of Data and Information Science2016,1,3:0
