1Effects of Barium Stress in Brassica juncea and Cakile maritima:The Indicator Role of Some Antioxidant Enzymes and Secondary Metabolites显示文摘Soil contamination by toxic trace metal elements,like barium(Ba),may stimulate various undesirable changes in the metabolic activity of plants.The plant responses are fast and with,direct or indirect,generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS).To cope with the stress imposed by the ROS production,plants developed a dual cellular system composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic players that convert ROS,and their by-products,into stable nontoxic molecules.To assess the Ba stress response of two Brassicaceae species(Brassica juncea,a glycophyte,and Cakile maritime,a halophyte),plants were exposure to different Ba concentrations(0,100,200,300 and 500µM).The plants response was evaluated through their morphology and development,the determination of plant leaves antioxidant enzymatic activities and by the production of plants secondary metabolites.Results indicated that the two Brassicaceae species have the ability to survive in an environment containing Ba(even at 500µM).The biomass production of C.maritima was slightly affected whereas an increase in biomass B.juncea was noticed.The stress imposed by Ba activated the antioxidant defense system in the two species,noticed by the changes in the leaves activity of catalase(CAT),ascorbate peroxidase(APX)and guaicol peroxidase(GPX),and of the secondary metabolites,through the production of total phenols and flavonoids.The enzymatic response was not similar within the two plant species:CAT and APX seem to have a more important role against the oxidative stress in C.maritima while in B.juncea is GPX.Overall,total phenols and flavonoids production was more significant in the plants aerial part than in the roots,of the both species.Although the two Brassicaceae species response was different,in both plants catalytic and non-catalytic transformation of ROS occurs,and both were able to overcome the Ba toxicity and prevent the cell damage.Houda Bouslimi Renata Ferreira Nesrine Dridi Pedro Brito Susete Martins-Dias Isabel Caçador Noomene Sleimi 2021Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2021,90,1:2

8A Simulation of Market-based Non-frequency Ancillary Service Procurement Based on Demand Flexibility显示文摘This paper proposes a novel approach for the provision of non-frequency ancillary service(AS)by consumers connected to low-voltage distribution networks.The proposed approach considers an asymmetric pool-based local market for AS negotiation,allowing consumers to set a flexibility quantity and desired price to trade.A case study with 98 consumers illustrates the proposed market-based non-frequency AS provision approach.Also,three different strategies of consumers’participation are implemented and tested in a real low-voltage distribution network with radial topology.It is shown that consumers can make a profit from the sale of their flexibility while contributing to keeping the network power losses,voltage,and current within pre-defined limits.Ultimately,the results demonstrate the value of AS coming directly from end-users.Ricardo Faia Fernando Lezama Tiago Pinto Pedro Faria Zita Vale José Manuel Terras Susete Albuquerque 2023Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy2023,11,3:0
9Forest management for optimizing soil protection:a landscape-level approach显示文摘Background:Soil erosion is still identified as the main cause of land degradation worldwide,threatening soil functions and driving several research and policy efforts to reverse it.Trees are commonly associated to some of the most successful land-use systems to achieve soil protection goals,but the extent to which forest ecosystems reduce erosion risks can largely depend on management decisions and associated silvicultural practices.Optimization tools can assist foresters in solving the complex planning problem they face,concerning the demand for different,and often conflicting,ecosystem services.A resource capability model(RCM),based on a linear programming approach,was built and solved for a forest landscape management problem in Northwest Portugal,over a 90-years planning horizon,divided in 10-years periods.Results:Timber provision and soil erosion were found to be in trade-off.The management alternatives included in the model were proven to be sufficiently flexible to obtain the desired level of timber yield,both in volume and even distribution along the planning horizon,while ensuring lower levels of soil loss estimates(below 35 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1)).However,under climate change conditions,compatible with an increasing greenhouse gases emission scenario,potential landscape soil erosion may be enhanced up to 46 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1) in critical periods.Conclusions:Soil conservation concerns in landscape-level forest management planning can be addressed by LPbased optimization methods.Besides providing an optimal management solution at landscape level,this approach enables a comprehensive analysis of the RCM,possible trade-offs and potential changes towards uncertainties.Ana Raquel Rodrigues Susete Marques Brigite Botequim Marco Marto Jose G.Borges 2021Forest Ecosystems2021,8,4:0
10Antioxidant and antitumor potential of wild and IMT-Acultivated Osmundea pinnatifida显示文摘Osmundea pinnatifida is a red edible seaweed known as pepper dulse.O.pinnatifida was cultivated in the farm of ALGAplus(ílhavo,Portugal).This farm is integrated with a seabream and seabass commercial aquaculture and uses the nutrient-enriched water resultant from the fish production as its cultivation medium in the integrated multi-trophic aquaculture(IMTA)manner.Wild and IMTA-cultivated samples of O.pinnatifi da were screened for antioxidant and antitumor activities.The antioxidant capacity of solvent extracts from wild and IMTA cultivated samples was assessed in two methods(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)and oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC)),and their total phenolic contents(TPC)were estimated.Antitumor activity was evaluated in three different tumor cell lines(HepG-2,MCF-7,and SH-SY5Y)through 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT)assay.Among the solvents used for extraction,dichloromethane was the most eff ective to extract phenolic compounds and presented higher ORAC.A significant correlation was found between TPC and ORAC,which was also sustained by the principal components analysis(PCA).Dichloromethane extracts induced a cytostatic eff ect on MCF-7 cells and showed weak cytotoxicity to SH-SY5Y cells and weak impact on cell proliferation.Overall,there were no statistically signifi cant differences in the biological activities shown by the wild and IMTA-cultivated samples.Hence,O.pinnatifida can be obtained in an economical and environmentally sustainable way through IMTA,maintaining bioactive properties in a high potential for further nutraceutical purposes.SILVA J.Paulo ALVES Celso PINTEUS Susete SILVA Joana VALADO Ana PEDROSA Rui PEREIRA Leonel 2019Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2019,37,3:0
11Historical Scope of Seasonal Influenza A and B Infections in Cuba and Their Impact on Mortality in the Elderly,1983-2005显示文摘Background:Influenza causes high mortality in the elderly.Its behavior has not been studied regularly in tropical and subtropical countries,like Cuba.The purposes of this study were to understand the circulation type and subtype of the influenza virus and to obtain evidence of their relationship with underlying P&I deaths in persons aged 65 years or older.Methods:A retrospective study was carried out with 7,252 positive sera from influenza A(H3N2),A(H1N1)or from type B by hemagglutination inhibition assay from 1983-1984 and 2004-2005 seasons,which created three series with the type/subtype prevalence percentages corresponding to the total of positive cases.The relationship between mortality by pneumonia and influenza in people aged 65 years or more was determined by calculating its mean rates when the type/subtype prevalence was above the median or not.Results:The circulation pattern of these viruses in Cuba was defined,and predominance of A(H3N2)in the 77%of seasons was corroborated.The mean rate of mortality increased 24.4%(p<0.001)when any pair of virus was above its medians and for the subtype A(H3N2)the increase was of 14.6%(p<0.05).Conclusions:For the first time the Health Authorities of Cuba received a“native”pattern on the circulation of influenza viruses in the period studied,showing increases in mortality for underlying pneumonia and influenza in people aged 65 years or older when the A(H3N2)or any pair of viruses were above their means and underscoring the need for better prevention measures and vaccination programs for elderly people in our country.Oropesa Fernández Suset Gonzalez Ochoa Edilberto Alonso Ismell Savón Valdés Clara Armas Luisa Arencibia García Amely Gonzalez Munoz Grehete Martínez Motas Isabel Hernández Espinosa Bárbara Gonzalez Baéz Gelsys Roque Arrieta Rosmery 2019Journal of US-China Medical Science2019,16,1:0
