| 1 | Total hepatectomy and liver transplantation as a two-stage procedure for fulminant hepatic failure: A safe procedure in exceptional circumstances显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the outcomes of two-stage liver transplant at a single institution, between 1993 and March 2015.METHODS: We reviewed our institutional experience with emergency hepatectomy followed by transplantation for fulminant liver failure over a twenty-year period. A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained liver transplant database was undertaken at a national liver transplant centre. Demographic data, clinical presentation, preoperative investigations, cardiocirculatory parameters, operative and postoperative data were recorded.RESULTS: In the study period, six two-stage liver transplants were undertaken. Indications for transplantation included acute paracetamol poisoning(n = 3), fulminant hepatitis A(n = 1), trauma(n = 1) and exertional heat stroke(n = 1). Anhepatic time ranged from 330 to 2640 min. All patients demonstrated systemic inflammatory response syndrome in the first post-operative week and the incidence of sepsis was high at 50%. There was one mortality, secondary to cardiac arrest 12 h following re-perfusion. Two patients required re-transplantation secondary to arterial thrombosis. | 2 | Nicotine as a mitogenic stimulus for pancreatic acinar cell proliferation显示文摘Cell proliferation is an important process in life for growth of normal and cancer cells. The signal transduction pathways activated during this process are strictly regulated. This editorial focuses on the role of nicotine, a mitogen, in the induction of signaling pathways resulting in proliferation of pancreatic tumor cells and compares these events with those in normal acinar cells isolated from the rat pancreas. The data shows striking similarities between these two cellular systems. In addition, the editorial reviews very recent literature of the contribution of MAPK signaling in cell lines associated with human diseases. | 6 | Population structure analysis and determination of neurotoxin content in a set of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) accessions of Bangladesh origin显示文摘Grass pea(Lathyrus sativus L.) is a crop that is considered one of the more resilient to climate change. With protein-rich seeds and leaves, it has strong potential as human food as well as animal feed and fodder. However, genetic improvement in this crop remains stagnant owing to the poor characterization of its genetic resources. In this study, we characterized 118 accessions of grass pea with 18 EST-SSR markers. A total of 118 accessions, 101 of L. sativus(100 cultivated accessions from Bangladesh and one wild accession) and 17 wild accessions of other Lathyrus species, were used. A total of 67 alleles were detected, with an average of 3.72 alleles per locus and average polymorphism information content of 0.52. A dissimilarity matrix was formed and hierarchical cluster analysis performed using the UPGMA method grouped genotypes into four main clusters. Cluster analysis based on the genetic dissimilarity revealed a clear grouping of the 100 cultivated and 18 wild accessions into four main groups. Group I consisted of 20 accessions with high β-N-oxalyl-L-α,β-diaminopropionic acid(β-ODAP) concentration. Of these 20 accessions, 17 were wild accessions. Only one wild accession(L. cicera) was clustered in group II, which contained 35 accessions. Most of the group II accessions contained low β-ODAP. Group III was represented by 34 accessions, many of them with high β-ODAP. Group IV consisted of 29 accessions, a few of which had very high β-ODAP concentrations. Analysis of molecular variance of the microsatellite data showed significantly higher values of molecular variance between(83%) than within(17%) populations. | 7 | Protective effect of Prostane in experimental prostatic hyperplasia in rats显示文摘Aim: Prostane, a polyherbal formulation, was evaluated for its efficacy on ,5a-reductase inhibition, a-adrenergie anta-gonistic activity and testosterone-induced prostatic hypeqllasia. Methods: 5a-reductase inhibition was evaluated usingrat prostate hornogeante as an enzyme source. Adrenergic antagonistic' activity was evaluated using isolated rat vas def-erens. Experimental prostatic hyperplasia was induced in rats by' giving testosterone 3 mg/kg sc for 21 days. Re-suits: Prostane dose-dependently inhibited 5a-reductase aetivity and exhibited a-adrenergic antagonistic activity. Treat-ment with Prostane at 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg body wt, po for 21 days significantly reduced the prostatic weight, theepithelial height and the stroinal proliferation in experimental prostatic hypertrophy. Conclusion: Prostane is effectivein the treatment of experimental prostatic hypertrophy in rats and may be passed on to clinical trials on benign prostatichypertrophy after necessary toxicological evaluations.
