| 1 | Effect of Saccharomyces boulardii and Bacillus subtilis B10 on gut microbiota modulation in broilers显示文摘The gut microbiota plays important roles in animal overall health and productiveness. Balancing host gut microbiota by probiotics has been documented. Our previous study showed that Saccharomyces boulardii(Sb) and Bacillus subtilis B10(Bs) significantly improve growth performance and modulate the intestinal histomorphology in broilers. To increase the knowledge regarding Sb and Bs, this study investigated the effects of these 2 probiotic strains on the gut microbiota in broilers. Three hundred 1-day-old Sanhuang broilers(Chinese cross breed) were randomly divided into 3 groups, each group with 5 replications(n = 20). The control group(CK) was fed a basal diet containing an antibiotic(virginiamycin, 20 mg/kg) and the other 2 groups received Sb and Bs(1 × 10~8cfu/kg of feed) in addition to the basal diet. After 72 d of treatment, pyrosequencing revealed that the bacterial communities varied along the section of intestinal tract in the control and Bs groups, but not in the Sb group. No difference in microbial diversity was observed among 3 groups. The major phyla observed along the GI tract of broilers(particularly in the duodenum and cecum) were Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia, which were considered potentially growth performance-related. Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia were observed at a much higher abundance in the jejunums and ileums of the Sb group(P < 0.05). In addition, the jejunal microbial communities formed 3 different clusters at either the genus level or the category of metabolism among the groups, based on the principal component analyses. | 2 | Effects of light quality on growth and development of cucumber seedlings in controlled environment显示文摘Conventional light sources have been successfully used to cultivate a wide variety of horticultural crops.However,they are of limited use due to uncontrollability of spectra and energy inefficiency.Light-emitting diodes(LEDs)emerged with tremendous potential in controlled environment agriculture due to their energy efficiency,longevity,and spectral specificity,but the effects of different types of LEDs on plant growth and development must be examined.In this study,cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.cv.Zhongnong 26)seedlings were grown under four different lighting treatments that each delivered a photosynthetic photon flux density of 200μmol/m2·s at plant canopy including triphosphate fluorescent lamps(TF),high-frequency fluorescent lamps(HF),white LEDs(WL),and red and blue LEDs(RBL).Cucumber seedlings were grown in a growth chamber at(25.0±1.5)℃with 12-hour light and 12-hour dark for 30 days after sowing,and data were subsequently collected.Seedlings grown under the WL were 45%,12%,and 40%taller than those grown under the TF,HF and RBL,respectively.The leaf area was 23%smaller under the TF than under the HF.The shoot dry weight was 16%-22%lower under the TF than under the other lighting treatments.The transplants grown under the RBL had the lowest root dry weight and root to shoot ratio.The seedling quality index was similar among all the lighting treatments.The LEDs treatment yielded more total dry weight with unit electric power compared to the fluorescent lamps.The chlorophyll content was 13%-15%higher in plants grown under the HF and WL than that under the TF and RBL.Plants grown under the WL and RBL had greater photosynthetic rate,transpiration rate,and stomatal conductance than those grown under the TF and HF.It was concluded that high quality cucumber seedlings can be efficiently produced under the broad-spectrum WL that emit a reasonable amount of blue,green and red light,and the lack of green light and/or high ratio of red to blue light under the RBL may cause undesired plant attributes. | Song Jinxiu Meng Qingwu Du Weifen He Dongxian | 2017 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,3: | 4 |
| 3 | Distribution of living radiolarians in spring in the South China Sea and its responses to environmental factors显示文摘Using a planktonic net(62-?m mesh) and a Rose-Bengal staining method, we studied the spatial distribution of living radiolarians in spring along two sections of the South China Sea(SCS) in spring and discussed the responses of living radiolarian distribution to tropical environmental factors. Generally, the highest abundance of living radiolarians occurred at the depth range of 25–75 m, where the chlorophyll-a maximum and the highest primary productivity were. In contrast, the maximum living abundance occurred in the top 25 m in cold eddies in the open seas and the abundance decreased with depth. We found that the inhibition effect of changing salinity(due to runoffs) on living radiolarians was much stronger than the promotion effect of mesoscale cold eddies. We observed that large variation of temperature was unfavorable for living radiolarians. The dominant species composition consisted of tropical-subtropical warm species. We identified some indicator species for tropical environments. Living Didymocyrtis tetrathalamus tetrathalamus could be an indicator for tropical surface water or mixed-layer water, and even for tropical oligotrophic water. Living Tetrapyle octacantha could be used to indicate tropical thermocline and eutrophic environment. Living Acanthodesmia vinculata could indicate tropical surface and subsurface waters. T. octacantha and A. vinculata should only be used as indicators for upwelling in the open seas, i.e., far away from river mouths. Living Siphonosphaera polysiphonia preferred to form colonies, which might be related to the effect of warm eddies. | 4 | Conversion of hepatoma cells to hepatocyte-like cells by defined hepatocyte nuclear factors显示文摘Normal cells become cancer cells after a malignant transformation,but whether cancer cells can be reversed to normal status remains elusive.Here,we report that the combination of hepatocyte nuclear factor IA (HNFIA),HNF4A and forkhead box protein A3 (FOXA3)synergistically reprograms hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)cells to hepatocyte-like cells (reprogrammed hepatocytes, rHeps).Our results show that rHeps lose the malignant phenotypes of cancer cells and retrieve hepatocyte-specific characteristics including hepatocyte-like morphology;global expression pattern of genes and specific biomarkers of hepatocytes;and the unique hepatic functions of albumin (ALB)secretion,glycogen synthesis,low-density lipoprotein (LDL)uptake,urea production, cytochrome P450 enzymes induction and drug metabolism.Intratumoral injection of these three factors efficiently shrank patientderived tumor xenografts and reprogrammed HCC cells in vivo.Most importantly,transplantation of rHeps in the liver of fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase-deficient (Fah^-/-)mice led to the reconstruction of hepatic lobules and the restoration of hepatic function.Mechanistically,exogenous expression of HNF1A,HNF4A and FOXA3 in HCC cells initiated the endogenous expression of numerous hepatocyte nuclear factors,which promoted the conversion of HCC cells to hepatocyte-like cells.Collectively,our results indicate the successful conversion of hepatoma cells to hepatocyte-like cells,not only extending our current knowledge of cell reprogramming but also providing a route towards a novel therapeutic strategy for cancer. | Zhuo Cheng Zhiying He Yongchao Cai Cheng Zhang Gongbo Fu Hengyu Li Wen Sun Changcheng Liu Xiuliang Cui Beifang Ning Daimin Xiang Tengfei Zhou Xiaofeng Li Weifen Xie Hongyang Wang Jin Ding | 2019 | Cell Research2019,29,2: | 3 |
| 5 | Radiolarian biostratigraphy in the Southern Bering Sea since Pliocene显示文摘Detailed radiolarian biostratigraphy in the Plio-Pleistocene was analyzed by using samples from IODP Site U1340 that was drilled to a core depth of 604 m in the southern Bering Sea.A total of 227 species belonging to 102 genera were identified.Based on the distributions of the radiolarian index species at Site U1340,five radiolarian zones since the Pliocene were established in the southern Bering Sea for the first time,and 25 radiolarian bioevents were recognized.Their ages were estimated on the basis of the age-depth plot that was constructed by the synthetical datum of the effective biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic events.The radiolarian zones at Site U1340 were systematically compared with those in its adjacent regions since the late Early Pliocene,which further improved and interpreted the biostratigraphic datum as well as their correlations in the middle-high latitude of the North Pacific.In addition,the comparative results of radiolarian zones show that Botryostrobus aquilonaris Zone emended in this paper is equivalent to the upper part of the same zone defined by Hays,1970,and Druppatractus irregularis-Dorydruppa bensoni Zone as well as Spongodiscus sp.Zone,newly proposed in this paper,are well correlated with Cycladophora sakaii Zone and Stylatractus universus Zone in the subarctic North Pacific,respectively. | ZHANG Qiang CHEN MuHong ZHANG LanLan WANG RuJian XIANG Rong HU WeiFen | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,4: | 3 |
| 6 | Chitosan and β-cyclodextrin Microspheres as Pulmonary Sustained Delivery Systems显示文摘Chitosan andβ-cyclodextrin were used to prepare microspheres with theophylline for pulmonary delivery by spray drying method.The characteristics,mucociliotoxicity,permeation rate and drug release were studied.The drug entrapments of microspheresⅠ,ⅡandⅢ were from 35.70%to 21.09% and 13.33%,while yields and encapsulation efficiencies were higher than 45% and about 90% respectively. | 10 | Capacitive humidity sensing properties of carbon nanotubes grown on silicon nanoporous pillar array显示文摘Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on silicon nanoporous pillar array (Si-NPA) by thermal chemical vapor deposition method, and the structural and capacitive humidity sensing properties of CNT/Si-NPA were studied. It was found that with the relative humidity (RH) changing from 11% to 95%, a device re-sponse of ~480% was achieved at the frequency of 50000 Hz, and a linear device response curve could be obtained by adopting longitudinal logarithmic coordinate. The response/recovery times were measured to be ~20 s and ~10 s, respectively, which indicated a rather fast response/recovery rate. The adsorption-desorption dynamic cycle experiments demonstrated the high measurement reproducibility of CNT/Si-NPA sensors. | 12 | Prevalence of intermittent exotropia among primary and secondary school students in Shantou,China显示文摘Background: Few prevalence studies on intermittent exotropia(IXT) based on Chinese populations. Furthermore, longitudinal change in this pattern within a local setting has not been reported in the past. This study aims to determine the profile of children with IXT in China.Methods: A total of 7,537 subjects from nine multi-layer primary and secondary schools participated in this investigation. The position of eyes was examined by using Hirschberg test and alternate cover test. The obtained results were classified according to respective features and analyzed statistically. Results: The prevalence of IXT among the participants was 7.98%, accounting for 73.04% of all types of strabismus. Junior high school students had a lower prevalence of IXT than elementary and senior high school counterparts. Logistic regression analysis showed that IXT was mainly found in male pupils at high grades in rural areas and in male secondary students at high grade in urban regions. Conclusions: IXT was shown to be more prevalent than other types of strabismus in Chinese children.
