The response of deltaic systems to climatic and hydrological changes in Daihai Lake rift basin,Inner Mongolia, northern China显示文摘Delta systems are ubiquitous around lacustrine rift basins. Its peripheral ge-ometry, progradation structures and sedimentary successions were controlled by both tec-tonic settings and climatic changes. Peripheral geometry of a delta was strongly influenced by depositional gradients which formed the fan-shape delta on the steep slopes and developed the lobe-shape delta on the gentle slopes. Due to the discharge feed rivers can change rapidly driven by climatic variations, and the nearshore area of deltas display considerable facies variability. The rise of annual rainfall, which suggests the rivers feeding deltas are continuous, and result in distributary mouth bars that are prevalent in the front of deltas since the down-slope flows are greater than the along-slope currents. On the contrary, when the annual rainfall decreases and evaporation increases, the rivers only can feed deltas ephemerally. If the along-slope currents were in a dominant position, the distal bars were deposited. Progra-dation structure and sedimentary successions of deltas were controlled by the gradients of slopes. On gentle depositional slopes, shingle foreset beds predominate with fine sediments and small-scale sedimentary structures or vice versa.Yu Xinghe Li Shunli Tan Chengpeng Xie Jing Chen Bintao Yang Fan 2013Journal of Palaeogeography2013,2,1:6
The Relationship between Tectonic Subsidence and BSR of Upper Neogene in the Deep-Water Area of the Northern Continental Slope, South China Sea显示文摘BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector) occurs widely in the strata since the late Miocene in the deep-water area of the northern continental slope of South China Sea (SCS). It is an important seismic reference mark which identifies the gas hydrate and its distribution influenced by the tectonic movements. Single-point basin modeling was conducted using 473 points in the study area. To discuss the relationships between the tectonic subsidence and BSR, the volume and rate of tectonic subsidence in each geological time have been simulated. The results show that there are three tectonic accelerate subsidence processes in the study area since the late Miocene, especially since 1.8Ma the tectonic subsidence accelerates more apparently. Since the Late Miocene to Pleistocene, the rate of tectonic subsidence in deep-water underwent a transformation from weak to strong. The ratio of tectonic subsidence to the total subsidence was relatively high (65-70%). Through the superposition of the BSR developed areas and the contours of tectonic subsidence in this area, it was discovered that more than 80% of BSR tend to be distributed at the slope break or depression-uplift structural transfer zone and the average tectonic subsidence rate ranges from 70 m/Ma to 125 m/Ma.YU Xinghe WANG Jianzhong LI Shengli FANG Jingnan JIANG Longyan CONG Xiaorong LIANG Jinqiang SHA Zhibin 2013Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2013,87,3:6
Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy of Marine to Lacustrine Deltaic Deposits in a Craton Basin and Their Controlling Factors: Shan 2 Member–He 8 Member(Guadalupian–Lopingian, Permian), Southeast Ordos Basin, North China显示文摘The Shan 2 Member, Shan 1 Member and He 8 Member of the Mid–Late Permian Shanxi and lower Xiashihezi formations, in the southeastern Ordos Basin, together comprise ~150 m of deltaic deposits. This sequence records an overall evolution from deep marine environment to shallow lake associated with braided river, braided river delta and meandering river delta. Core description, well log interpretation, and stable isotope analysis, including carbon, oxygen and strontium, were conducted to understand the sedimentary evolution of Shan 2 to He 8 Member. The Shanxi Formation, which consists of the Shan 2 and Shan 1 members, is characterized by a tidal-influenced meandering river delta environment and a higher δ^(13)C value and ^(87)Sr?(^(86)Sr) ratio and a lower δ^(18)O value. The He 8 Member, the basal part of the Xiashihezi Formation, is featured by a braided river to braided river delta system and a lower δ^(13)C value, ^(87)Sr?(^(86)Sr) ratio, and a higher δ^(18)O value. Four third-order depositional sequences separated by five sequence boundaries are determined. Coarsening upward sequences of the Shan 2 Member–He 8 Member indicate a general regression trend, which can be correlated to global sea-level fall occurring during the Roadian–Wuchiapingian, as also evidenced by previous published zircon U–Pb results. The coal-bearing sequence(Shanxi Formation) to non-coal-bearing sequence(He 8 Member), as well as a decrease of ^(87)Sr?(^(86)Sr), suggest a trend from humid to arid climates. A combined effect of sea-level drop and a small uplift at the end of Shanxi Formation are proposed.SHAN Xin YU Xinghe Peter CLIFT LI Yalong JIN Lina SU Dongxu DU Yonghui ZHOU Jinsong HAN Xiaoqin 2018Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2018,92,1:4
Patterns of gas hydrate accumulation in mass transport deposits related to canyon activity: Example from Shenhu drilling area in the South China Sea显示文摘Since 2017, a plenty of gas hydrates have been drilled in a new area of Shenhu, and good heterogeneity has been found throughout the spatial distribution of the reservoir. After distinguishing different sedimentary sequence types and matching their formation with slope deposition settings, this study proposes three mass transport deposit(MTD) patterns related to canyon activity that occurred contemporaneously or epigenetically with it: well preserved MTDs, MTDs eroded by canyon migration, and MTDs dislocated by contemporaneous faults. Based on seismic reflection characteristics, this study proposed methods of quantitatively analyzing sedimentary factors, such as measuring the turbidities flow rate in the canyon, and results are interpreted with respect to canyon activity. Combining the above parameters and their relationship with gas hydrate accumulation, fine-grained seals overlapping coarse MTDs reservoirs are found to be indispensable to gas hydrate accumulation, as they prevent the release of free gas. Based on grain size data of hydrate samples from drilling wells, multi-layered gas hydrate reservoirs capped by fine-grained sediments and overlapping mud show favorable hydrate-bearing prospects. The release of gas hydrates, however, is mostly caused by the lack of mud sealing in relation to canyon activity, such as turbidities flow erosion and contemporaneous fault breaking. Canyon migration with respect to MTDs may be the actual cause of erosion of overlapping syn-sedimentary layers, and high bottom flows may contribute to an increase in the release of free gas. It is believed that contemporaneous faults caused by unstable canyon walls may break the muddy over layers and decrease the accumulation pressure of gas hydrate bearing. Thus, according to the sedimentary characteristics of MTDs and the hydrate accumulation process, three responding accumulation or releasing patterns are proposed, which respond to the different types of MTDs distinguished above: a well-preserved MTD accumulation pattern; a canyon migration eroded MTD release pattern; and a micro-contemporaneous fault dislocated MTD release pattern.Chao Fu Shengli Li Xinghe Yu Jinqiang Liang Zenggui Kuang Yulin He Lina Jin 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,5:3
Sedimentary Patterns and Stratigraphic Trap Models of Deeply Buried Intervals in the Baxian Depression, North China显示文摘The Baxian depression is a typical half-graben located in the Jizhong sub-basin, north China. Commercial petroleum traps have been discovered in the Jizhong sub-basin. However, the 3^(rd) and 4^(th) members of the Shahejie Formation in this sub-basin have been poorly explored. These two members, belonging to the Lower Paleogene age, are buried deeply in the depression. Favorable petroleum reservoir conditions exist in such deep intervals of the half-graben due to the presence of different types and extent of deltas and turbidity fans in various areas. In fact, three types of turbidite fans are developed in the sag below the transitional belt on the eastern gentle slope. This work summarized three stratigraphic trap belts, i.e., the steep slope, gentle slope, and sag. On the steep slope, structuralstratigraphic traps with small-scale delta fronts and turbidite sandbodies are well developed. On the gentle slope, hydrocarbons generally accumulate in the large-scale delta front, onlapping beds and those sandbodies adjacent to unconformities. In the sag, petroleum trap models are typically characterized by pinched-out turbidite sandbodies. Stratigraphic traps were easily formed in turbidite fans below the eastern transitional belt. The petroleum traps that have already been discovered or predicted in the study area indicate that stratigraphic traps have favorable petroleum exploration potential in deeply buried areas(depth >5000 m) in a half-graben basin or depression.LI Shengli YU Xinghe ZHANG Feng LIANG Xingru LI Shunli HUANG Jie CAO Nanzhu 2017Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2017,91,6:3
Sedimentary Microfacies and Porosity Modeling of Deep-Water Sandy Debris Flows by Combining Sedimentary Patterns with Seismic Data: An Example from Unit I of Gas Field A, South China Sea显示文摘Sandy debris flow deposits are present in Unit I during Miocene of Gas Field A in the Baiyun Depression of the South China Sea.The paucity of well data and the great variability of the sedimentary microfacies make it difficult to identify and predict the distribution patterns of the main gas reservoir, and have seriously hindered further exploration and development of the gas field. Therefore, making full use of the available seismic data is extremely important for predicting the spatial distribution of sedimentary microfacies when constructing three-dimensional reservoir models.A suitable reservoir modeling strategy or workflow controlled by sedimentary microfacies and seismic data has been developed.Five types of seismic attributes were selected to correlate with the sand percentage, and the root mean square(RMS)amplitude performed the best. The relation between the RMS amplitude and the sand percentage was used to construct a reservoir sand distribution map.Three types of main sedimentary microfacies were identified:debris channels, fan lobes, and natural levees.Using constraints from the sedimentary microfacies boundaries,a sedimentary microfacies model was constructed using the sequential indicator and assigned value simulation methods. Finally, reservoir models of physical properties for sandy debris flow deposits controlled by sedimentary microfacies and seismic inversion data were established.Property cutoff values were adopted because the sedimentary microfacies and the reservoir properties from well-logging interpretation are intrinsically different.Selection of appropriate reservoir property cutoffs is a key step in reservoir modeling when using simulation methods based on sedimentary microfacies control. When the abnormal data are truncated and the reservoir properties probability distribution fits a normal distribution,microfacies-controlled reservoir property models are more reliable than those obtained from the sequence Gauss simulation method. The cutoffs for effective porosity of the debris channel, fan lobe, and natural levee facies were 0.2,0.09,and 0.12,respectively;the corresponding average effective porosities were 0.24,0.13,and 0.15.The proposed modeling method makes full use of seismic attributes and seismic inversion data, and also makes the property data of single-well depositional microfacies more conformable to a normal distribution with geological significance. Thus, the method allows use of more reliable input data when we construct a model of a sandy debris flow.LI Shengli YU Xinghe JIN Jianli 2016Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2016,90,1:1
Different initial density turbidite sediments with coarse grain injection and their corresponding flow pattern: Additional insights from numerical simulation in a study case of South China Sea显示文摘The work presents the sedimentology and depositional results of the turbidity flow from Miocene to Pliocene along the North Slope of South China Sea(SCS).The integration of the core-log-seismic data has enabled us to clarify turbidity flow with different density and characterize their corresponding seismic geomorphic sedimentation.Based on the differences between the initial density and the later,we classified the turbidity flow into two types,namely:low-and high-density flow with coarse grain injection.According to the hydrodynamic numerical simulation results,we constructed different subcritical turbidity flow models with various density and rebuilt the depositional pattern along the slope. As to the numerical simulation model,we introduced the erosion rate into the classical full Reynolds-averaged N-S(RANS)equation,which is suitable to the deep-sea slope area.Through comparison of the above simulation models, the results show that the high-density turbidites with coarse-grained injection are mostly developed with lower vertical erosion rates and higher lateral abrasion rates. They are characterized with multi-branched and lobe-shaped sedimentary volumes, while low-density turbidites with coarse-grained injection are characterized with higher vertical erosion rates and lower lateral abrasion rates. And this kind of turbidites can generate single-branched and banding deposits. In addition, the fluctuating sea levels and the varying topographies are important to influence the subcritical turbidity flow models in the deep-water slope.Chao Fu Xinghe Yu Yulin He Jianqiang Liang Zenggui Kuang 2019Petroleum Research2019,4,1:1

Evolution model of a modern delta fed by a seasonal river in Daihai Lake,North China:determined from groundpenetrating radar and trenches显示文摘While deltas fed by seasonal rivers are common in modem sedimentary environments, their characteristics remain unclear as compared to those fed by perennial rivers. This study identifies a small delta discharged by a seasonal stream flowing into Daihai Lake,in northern China, which is driven by ephemeral and high-energy flood events.Detailed 3D facies architecture was analyzed using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and sedimentary logs from outcrop and trenches.Four types of radar surfaces, including truncations of underlying inclined strata, weak reflections, and depositional surface of downlap and onlap, were identified.Six radar facies (highangle obliquetangential,low-angle subparallel, gently plane parallel,plane-parallel,chaotic,and continuous strong reflection) were identified based on distinctive reflections, including amplitude, continuity, dip, and termination patterns.Five depositional units (Unit A to E) were documented from proximal to distal delta.Seasonal discharge signatures include significant grain-size decrease over short distance, abundant Froude supercritical flow sedimentary structures, poorly developed barforms, and small-scale scour and fill structures.Records of lake-level and sediment budget were evaluated over the past 60 years. In highstand stage (1960- 1980),amalgamated channel (Units A and B),and delta front (Unit C) were deposited. In slope stage (1980-1996),the lower deposits (Units A,B,C) were eroded by Unit D with a distinct truncation surface. In lowstand stage, most eroded sediments bypassed the incised channel and accumulated in the distal part,in which a new depositional unit was formed (Unit E).The model demonstrates that deltas fed by seasonal rivers tend to accumulate large amounts of sediments carried by high magnitude floods within short periods.Beibei LIU Chengpeng TAN Xinghe YU Xin SHAN Shunli LI 2019Frontiers of Earth Science2019,13,2:1

Submarine landslides, relationship with BSRs in the Dongsha area of South China Sea显示文摘Gas hydrate samples were first obtained in the Dongsha area,South China Sea(GMGS2)in 2013.High-resolution 3D seismic data in the area show various small 1andslide bodies developedas huge mass transport deposits. These bodies are divided into seven types on the basis of theirshapes, intermal structures and geneses(slide, collapse and deformation above BSRs,as well asthe slump wedge, lens, block and sheet below BSRs).Based on this classification, detailed studieswere conducted, including measurements of the slump body sizes and slope gradients of landslides, depiction of their three-dimensional characteristics, and research on the landslide distribution.Todetermine the genetic differences of these seven types, this study analyses the possibility of verticalflow-pattern-transformation and mechanisms of submarine landsltide formation. Results show that thedominant factor influencing the submarine landslides in the Dongsha area is the free gas emitted fromgas hydrate decomposition, with possible fransformation between flow patterns. Finally, there are twokinds of relationships between submarine landslides and BSRs since the free gas either influences thesubmarine landslide bodies below or above BSRs,resulting in two types of submarine landslide bodyassociations:Type A is characterized by submarine slide above BSRs and slump lens below BSRs,whereas Type B shows deformation above BSRs and slump blocks below BSRs.Type Ais favourablefor gas exploration because it indicates less decomposition and better sealing of gas hydrate layers.Li Wan Xinghe Yu Tyson Steve Shunli Li Zenggui Kuang Zhibin Sha Jinqiang Liang Yulin He 2016Petroleum Research2016,1,1:1
Geochemical constraints on mixed source and hydrocarbon filling process in theYingjisu Sag,Tarim Basin,Xinjiang显示文摘The Yingjisu Sag was petroliferous for normal oil, condensate oil, reservoir bitumen and natural gases. Geochemical studies showed that natural gases in the Yingjisu Sag were a gas mixture consisting mainly of Cambrian pyrolysis gas, Jurassic condensate oil in well Yingnan 2 and normal oil in well Tadong 2, reflecting the characteristics of marine-phase gases and oils, while crude oils in well Longkou 1 demonstrated the characteristics of both marine and terrestrial oils, which were derived from lower algae and higher plants. Jurassic oils from wells Longkou 1 and Huayingcan 1 and Cambrian crude oils from well Tadong 2 were derived mainly from Cambrian-Lower Ordovician source rocks. Jurassic and Silurian reservoir bitumens from well Yingnan 2 were biodegradated, suggesting they are of marine and terrestrial origins. The bitumens have similar geochemical characteristics, which are correlated well with Ordovician crude oils from well Tadong 2 and Jurassic condensate oil from well Yingnan 2. Based on the characteristics of tectonic evolution in this area and the analysis of hydrocarbon accumulation, the constraints on the mixed source and hydrocarbon filling process in the Yingjisu Sag were brought forward.PANG Lingyun CHANG Xiangchun WANG Mingzhen YU Xinghe MA Lixin DUAN Yunge 2009Chinese Journal Of Geochemistry2009,28,3:0
Strata Architectural Variability and Facies Distribution in a Structural Transfer Zone: A Case Study of Fushan Sag, Northern South China Sea显示文摘Structural transfer zones in a half-graben rift basin play a significant role in controlling sandy sediments and providing a target for hydrocarbon exploration. Previous studies have classified the transfer zone in lacustrine environments into two different patterns: synthetic approaching transfer zones and synthetic overlapping transfer zones. However, the evolution of the depositional pattern and the controlling factors of the above transfer zones are still unclear. In the Fushan Sag, the northern South China Sea, an overlapping transfer zone developed in the early Eocene Epoch, while a synthetic approaching transfer zone developed in the late Eocene, due to tectonic uplift. This evolutionary process provided an opportunity to study the stacking pattern of strata architectural variability and facies distribution in the structural transfer zone of the Eocene lacustrine basin. In this study, following the indications of the oriented sedimentary structures in core samples and heavy mineral assemblages of 18 wells, the evolution of the paleo-hydrodynamic distribution during the early and late Eocene has been reconstructed. The sequence-stratigraphy was then divided and the sand body parameters calculated, according to the seismic data and well log interpretations. During the early Eocene, the lake level was at a low stand, the faults broken displacement in the East block being over 50 m. The prograding delta and turbidites are oriented perpendicular to the structural transfer zone. According to the quantitative analysis of the flow rate and the depositional parameters, we speculate that gravity transportation of the sediment and the sediment-supply are the dominating factors during this period. Up to the late Eocene, the rising lake level and the decreased fault displacement leads the flow to divert to a NE-direction, resulting in it being parallel to the axis of the transfer zone. Thus, we speculate that the accommodation space is predominant in this period. In comparison with the above two periods, a braided river delta with an isolated sand body and turbidites developing in the deep area is prominent in the overlapping transfer zone, while a meandering river delta is characteristic of the synthetic approaching transfer zone.FU Chao YU Xinghe CHEN Weitong REN Guiyuan LIU Desheng 2021Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2021,95,6:0
Sedimentary characteristics comparison and genesis analysis of the deepwater channel in the hydrate enrichment zones on the north slope of the South China Sea显示文摘Natural gas hydrate(NGH) is one of the important clean energy at present and even in the future. The study of its sedimentary environment and minerogenetic condition has long been a hot issue that has received much concern from geologists all over the world. China has successfully obtained the samples of NGH in Shenhu and Dongsha sea areas in 2007, 2013 and 2015, respectively. From this, the continental slope north of the South China Sea becomes an important test site for the study of NGH sedimentary genesis and minerogenetic condition. NGH has been found in Shenhu, Dongsha and Qiongdongnan areas within the continental slope north of South China Sea,at different depths of water, with different sedimentary characteristics, gas genesis, and minerogenetic conditions.Using a seismic sedimentology theory, combining seismic facies results of each facies, sedimentary facies and evolution of each area are documented in turn establishing a sedimentary model by considering palaeogeomorphology, sea level change and tectonic movement. The channel system and MTD(Mass Transport Deposition) system among these three areas were compared focusing on the developing position, appearance and controlling factors. Relative location among three areas is firstly defined that Dongsha area in a nearprovenance steep upper slope, Shenhu area in a normal gentle slope and Qiongdongnan area in an awayprovenance flat plain. Besides, their channel systems are classified into erosional, erosional-aggradational and aggradational channel, and MTD systems into headwall domain, translational domain and toe domain.Chao Fu Xinghe Yu Yiis Dong Yulin He Jinqiang Liang Zenggui Kuang 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,3:0
Classification of mass-transport complexes and distribution of gashydrate-bearing sediments in the northeastern continental slope of the South China Sea显示文摘The drilling areas in Shenhu and Dongsha,South China Sea,studied from 2007 to 2015,reveal great heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of the gas hydrate reservoir.Various types of mass-transport complexes(MTCs)were developed in the study areas, which served as ideal reservoirs. To conduct exploration in these areas,it is necessary to study the different types of MTCs and the corresponding gashydrate accumulations.By integrating seismic reflection and log coring data,we classified three types of MTCs according to their stress distribution:the tension, extrusion, and shear types, and their corresponding gashydrate accumulation patterns. The results show that the accumulation of the gas-hydrate varies with the type of MTC and stress distribution depending on the MTC’s position(e.g.,in the headwall, translational,or toe areas).Owing to this variance of the MTC’s position, the corresponding kinemics situation in the MTCs also varies.Accordingly,we determined the corresponding location in which the gashydrate develops for various types of MTCs.Based on the bottom simulating reflectors(BSRs)and the hydrate core and image logging data, the gashydrate reservoir shows an obvious heterogeneity in various types of MTCs.The gashydrate in the tension-type MTCs are mostly borne in the toe and the headwall parts. In extrusion-type MTCs,the translational and toe parts constitute an ideal hydrate reservoir. In shear-type MTCs,the headwall and toe parts’coarse-grained sediments show an obviously hydrate response. After comparing the gashydrate saturation and MTCs morphology statics data,we were able to quantitatively prove that the main factors determining gashydrate accumulation in the different types of MTCs are the fault displacement, sedimentary rate, and flow erosion rate.Chao FU Xinghe YU Xue FAN Yulin HE Jinqiang LIANG Shunli LI 2020Frontiers of Earth Science2020,14,1:0
