| 1 | Observer-based Adaptive Fuzzy Control for a Class of Nonlinear Time-delay Systems显示文摘An observer-based adaptive fuzzy control is presented for a class of nonlinear systems with unknown time delays. The state observer is first designed, and then the controller is designed via the adaptive fuzzy control method based on the observed states. Both the designed observer and controller are independent of time delays. Using an appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, the uncertainty of the unknown time delay is compensated, and then the fuzzy logic system in Mamdani type is utilized to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the constructed observer-based controller and the closed-loop system are proved to be asymptotically stable. The designed control law is independent of the time delays and has a simple form with only one adaptive parameter vector, which is to be updated on-line. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. | Hassan A. | 3 | Performance of an activated carbon made from waste palm shell in simultaneous adsorption of SO_x and NO_x of flue gas at low temperature显示文摘This study examined the individual and simultaneous adsorption of SOx (SO2) and NOx (NO-NO2) on activated carbon prepared from waste palm shell. The adsorption process was examined in a fixed bed reactor at low temperatures (100―300℃). For individual adsorption without any catalytic activation, SOx showed good adsorption whereas NOx was very much poor. In the simultaneous adsorption of SOx and NOx, SOx showed greater adsorption affinity than NOx. For palm shell activated carbon (PSAC) impregnated with metal catalyst (Ni and Ce) the concentration adsorbed profile showed that the amount of SOx adsorbed decreased regularly, while the amount of the adsorbed NOx increased irregularly. The properties of the pure and impregnated PSAC were analyzed by BET, SEM and EDX. | 5 | The microsatellite polymorphism of heme oxygenase-1 is associated with baseline plasma IL-6 level but not with restenosis after coronary in-stenting显示文摘Background Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) can express heme-oxygenase (HO), a rate-limiting enzyme in the degradation of heme to bilirubin, ferritin and carbon monoxide (CO). VSMC-derived CO can suppress VSMC proliferation and may serve as an antiproliferation factor. The promoter region of HO-1 shows a polymorphism with different (GT)_n repeats that has been reported to differently induce gene expression. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of this variation on the occurrence of restenosis after in-stent treatment in patients with coronary artery disease. Methods Candidates who underwent coronary stent implantation were genotyped for the HO-1 promoter polymorphism using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and automated DNA capillary sequencer. Serum levels of IL-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP) were obtained at baseline, 24 hours and 48 hours after stenting. The primary end point for the study was angiographic evidence of in-stent restenosis at 6 months. All parameters for evaluation of restenosis were analysed by quantitatve computer-assisted angiographic analysis (QCA). Results One hundred and eighty-seven patients who underwent coronary stent implantation were studied of whom 27.8% showed ≥50% restenosis after 6 months. The distribution of (GT)_n repeats of all patients in the promoter region of HO-1 genotype ranged from 22 to 42, with (GT)_ 25 and (GT)_ 32 being the two most common alleles. The allelic repeats were divided into the short class (S) with 29 (GT)_n, the middle class (M) with 30-37 (GT)_n and the long class (L) with 38 (GT)_n. There was no significant difference in the restenosis between the genotype groups or between post operation levels of inflammation markers, but carriers of the S allele (n=120) had 33.3% lower baseline IL-6 compared with non-S carriers (n=67, P=0.0008). Conclusions Although no association was observed between the HO-1 promoter polymorphism aod coronary in-stent restenosis following the stent procedure, the association with plasma IL-6 levels suggests that HO-1 S allele might protect from the atherosclerotic inflammatory process. | LI Ping Mohamed A. | 7 | Evaluation of phosphorus bioavailability in El Mex Bay and Lake Mariut sediments显示文摘Phosphorus(P) fractions and their bioavailability in the sediments from El Mex Bay and Lake Mariut in Egypt were investigated using different chemical extraction methods. Sodium bicarbonate(NaHC03)extractable P(Olsen-P) was the largest fraction(14.42%), followed by algal available P(AAP)(3.56%),water soluble P(WSP)(0.79%), and readily desorbable P(RDP)(0.06%) for El Mex Bay. While AAP contributed 9.94% to total P in sediments from Lake Mariut, Olsen-P 8.53%, WSP 4.11%, and RDP 0.92%.Summation of the bioavailable P fractions didn't exceed the sediment quality guidelines, and, therefore, P doesn't represent a danger to marine organisms. Correlation coefficients showed that no apparent relations between total P(TP) and iron(Fe), aluminum(Al), and calcium(Ca) in the sediments. Furthermore, Fe:P ratio was less than 15 indicting that there was not enough Fe in surface sediments to bind to P at most of the sampling sites. The positive correlation between TP and organic matter(OM) for Lake Mariut and El Mex Bay sediments indicated that the organic matter content of the sediment was a useful predictor of the total phosphorus content. Data from this study constitute a baseline of phosphorus bioavailability in sediments from El Mex Bay and Lake Mariut and could be used as a reference for future studies on the changes of bioavailable and residual phosphorus fractions over time. | Naglaa F. | 10 | Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Three Rows of Vertical Slotted Wall Breakwaters显示文摘In this study, we examine the hydrodynamic characteristics of three rows of vertical slotted wall breakwaters in which the front and middle walls are permeable and partially immersed in a water channel of constant depth, whereas the third wall is impermeable. The wave–structure interaction and flow behavior of this type of breakwater arrangement are complicated and must be analyzed before breakwaters can be appropriately designed. To study the hydrodynamic breakwater performance, we developed a mathematical model based on the eigenfunction expansion method and a least squares technique for predicting wave interaction with three rows of vertical slotted wall breakwaters. We theoretically examined the wave transmission, reflection, energy loss, wave runup, and wave force under normal regular waves. Comparisons with experimental measurements show that the mathematical model results adequately reproduce most of the important features. | 13 | A simulation study of using active traffic management strategies on congested freeways显示文摘The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using active traffic management (ATM) strategies on freeways in terms of the driver's behavior and operational impacts. A few test beds were selected to evaluate the impacts of ATM such as speed harmonization, shoulder utilization, and ramp metering. Test beds used in this study were at places where an ATM is either proposed or previously implemented, i.e., where data exists for conditions prior to and after the implementation of ATM. Data collected from the test beds were used in a simulation model to evaluate the impacts of each ATM strategy on speed, travel time, and crash rates. Simulation results indicated that the implementation of speed harmonization on US 90 showed a 14% reduction in crashes and a 2%-3% increase in freeway speed; the implementation of hard shoulders on US 90 showed a 39% increase in travel time, 22% increase in freeway capacity and 60% decrease in delays; and the implementation of ramp metering on US 59 between Bissonnet St. and Fondern road showed a decrease of 23 % in freeway travel time, a 14% increase in freeway speed and 11% decrease in accident rates. | Ramakrishna VADDE Joseph O. | 15 | Green synthesis of iron oxide(Fe_3O_4)nanoparticles using two selected brown seaweeds:Characterization and application for lead bioremediation显示文摘The exploitation of different plant materials for the biosynthesis of nanoparticles is considered a green technology because it does not involve any harmful chemicals. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles(Fe_3O_4-NPs) were synthesized using a completely green biosynthetic method by reduction of ferric chloride solution using brown seaweed water extracts. The two seaweeds Padina pavonica(Linnaeus) Thivy and Sargassum acinarium(Linnaeus) Setchell 1933 were used in this study. The algae extract was used as a reductant of Fe Cl_3 resulting in the phytosynthesis of Fe_3O_4-NPs. The phytogenic Fe_3O_4-NPs were characterized by surface plasmon band observed close to 402 nm and 415 nm; the obtained Fe_3O_4-NPs are in the particle sizes ranged from 10 to 19.5 nm and 21.6 to 27.4 nm for P. pavonica and S. acinarium, respectively. The strong signals of iron were reported in their corresponding EDX spectra. FTIR analyses revealed that sulphated polysaccharides are the main biomolecules in the algae extracts that do dual function of reducing the Fe Cl_3 and stabilizing the phytogenic Fe_3O_4-NPs. The biosynthesized Fe_3O_4-NPs were entrapped in calcium alginates beads and used in Pb adsorption experiments. The biosynthesized Fe_3O_4-NPs alginate beads via P. pavonica(Linnaeus) Thivy had high capacity for bioremoval of Pb(91%) while that of S. acinarium(Linnaeus) Setchell 1933 had a capacity of(78%) after 75 min.The values of the process parameters for the maximum Pb removal efficiency by Fe_3O_4-NPs alginate beads synthesized via P. pavonica(Linnaeus) Thivy were also estimated. | EL-KASSAS Hala Y. | 18 | Characterization and modeling of long-term stress-strain behavior of water confined pre-saturated gypsum rock in Kurdistan Region,Iraq显示文摘In order to understand the effects of soaking time and confined water pressure on the strength of rock due to dissolution of gypsum,rock samples with 96% of gypsum content collected from Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq were investigated.Laboratory tests were then performed on the normal gypsum rock samples under pre-saturated condition to obtain their uniaxial compressive strength(UCS) values.The pre-saturated samples were submerged in distilled water for 35 d,70 d and 105 d,respectively,under confined water pressures of 0-0.5 MPa.The gypsum content decreased by 11% after 105 d of soaking under confined water pressure of 0.5 MPa.The UCS of the normal gypsum rock was 19.6 MPa and it decreased to 6.3 MPa and 2 MPa after 105 d of soaking under confined water pressures of 0 and 0.5 MPa,respectively.A nonlinear constitutive model was used to simulate the experimental stress-strain relationships of rock samples under various conditions.The constitutive model parameters were sensitive to the gypsum content. | N. Nanocomposites are class of materials that contain at least one phase in the nanometric size range and can be produced by any suitable technique for preparing nanomaterials. Composites are an interesting class of materials that have recently been used in numerous applications, including structural, biomedical, electronics, and environmental applications. In composites, reinforcements might be fibers, particulates, or whiskers. Mechanical alloying(MA) is a promising technique for producing nanocomposite materials that are difficult or impossible to prepare via conventional techniques. In this review, we provide an overview of nanocomposites prepared by the MA process.
