A multi-purpose National Forest Inventory in Bangladesh:design, operationalisation and key results显示文摘Background:National forest inventory and forest monitoring systems are more important than ever considering continued global degradation of trees and forests. These systems are especially important in a country like Bangladesh, which is characterised by a large population density, climate change vulnerability and dependence on natural resources. With the aim of supporting the Government’s actions towards sustainable forest management through reliable information, the Bangladesh Forest Inventory(BFI)was designed and implemented through three components:biophysical inventory,socio-economic survey and remote sensing-based land cover mapping. This article documents the approach undertaken by the Forest Department under the Ministry of Environment,Forests and Climate Change to establish the BFI as a multipurpose, efficient, accurate and replicable national forest assessment. The design, operationalization and some key results of the process are presented. Methods:The BFI takes advantage of the latest and most well-accepted technological and methodological approaches.Importantly,it was designed through a collaborative process which drew from the experience and knowledge of multiple national and international entities.Overall,1781 field plots were visited,6400 households were surveyed, and a national land cover map for the year 2015 was produced.Innovative technological enhancements include a semi-automated segmentation approach for developing the wall-to-wall land cover map,an object-based national land characterisation system, consistent estimates between sample-based and mapped land cover areas, use of mobile apps for tree species identification and data collection, and use of differential global positioning system for referencing plot centres. Results:Seven criteria, and multiple associated indicators, were developed for monitoring progress towards sustainable forest management goals, informing management decisions, and national and international reporting needs.A wide range of biophysical and socioeconomic data were collected, and in some cases integrated, for estimating the indicators. Conclusions:The BFI is a new information source tool for helping guide Bangladesh towards a sustainable future.Reliable information on the status of tree and forest resources,as well as land use, empowers evidence-based decision making across multiple stakeholders and at different levels for protecting natural resources. The integrated socioeconomic data collected provides information about the interactions between people and their tree and forest resources, and the valuation of ecosystem services. The BFI is designed to be a permanent assessment of these resources, and future data collection will enable monitoring of trends against the current baseline. However, additional institutional support as well as continuation of collaboration among national partners is crucial for sustaining the BFI process in future.Matieu Henry Zaheer Iqbal Kristofer Johnson Mariam Akhter Liam Costello Charles Scott Rashed Jalal Md.Akhter Hossain Nikhil Chakma Olaf Kuegler Hossain Mahmood Rajib Mahamud Mohammad Raqibul Hasan Siddique Khaled Misbahuzzaman Mohammad Main Uddin Mohammed Al Amin Farid Uddin Ahmed Gael Sola Md.Baktiar Siddiqui Luca Birigazzi Mahmudur Rahman Ilias Animon Saimunnahar Ritu Laskar Muqsudur Rahman Aminul Islam Heather Hayden Frida Sidik Mondal Falgoonee Kumar Rakibul Hassan Mukul Hossain Nishad Ariful Hoque Belal Asif Reza Anik Abdul Khaleque Md.Shaheduzzaman Syed Shahadat Hossain Tariq Aziz Md.Tauhidor Rahaman Ruhul Mohaiman Patrick Meyer Purnata Chakma A.Z.M.Manzoor Rashid Sourav Das Shrabanti Hira Mohammed Jashimuddin Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman Karl Wurster Sarder Nasir Uddin Abul Kalam Azad S.M.Zahirul Islam Laurent Saint-André 2021Forest Ecosystems2021,8,1:0
Effects of Convolvulus arvensis Water Extract on Germination of Okra Under Different Seed Sizes显示文摘Convolvulus arvensis is a toxic allelopathic weed that suppresses germination and growth of crops. The prime object of present study was to investigate effect of Convolvulus arvensis water extract on germination and performance of okra with different seed sizes. The seeds of okra variety pusa green were separated into three different sizes, viz large size(4.00-5.00 mm),medium size(3.00-3.50 mm)and small size(2.00-3.50 mm),and then soaked in allelopathic plant bindweed water extract and kept in patrisdishes for germination into the germinator at 15℃.The experiment was laid out using Complete Randomized Design(CRD)with three replications. The results showed that after sowing of 12 days the highest germination was observed in non-treated seeds as compared to seeds treated in Convolvulus arvensis water extract for 1 h,further non-treated large seeds produced maximum plants as compared to treated small seeds after sowing of 24 days.Meanwhile, root length, shoot length, root fresh and dry weight, shoot fresh and dry weight were recorded higher in non-treated large seeds as compared to small seeds soaked for 1 h in Convolvulus arvensis allelopthic water extract. It could be found that Convolvulus arvensis affected germination, seed growth and overall performance of okra, further presence Convolvulus arvensis in crops could cause negative impact on germination and integrity of okra crops.Abid Hussain Khoso Ghulam Mustafa Laghari Aziz Ahmed Laghari Ali Muhammad Bozdar Asif Ali Kaleri Nasir Ali 2017Journal of Northeast Agricultural University(English Edition)2017,24,1:0
Cartesian Product Based Transfer Learning Implementation for Brain Tumor Classification显示文摘Knowledge-based transfer learning techniques have shown good performance for brain tumor classification, especially with small datasets. However,to obtain an optimized model for targeted brain tumor classification,it is challenging to select a pre-trained deep learning(DL)model, optimal values of hyperparameters, and optimization algorithm(solver). This paper first presents a brief review of recent literature related to brain tumor classification.Secondly,a robust framework for implementing the transfer learning technique is proposed. In the proposed framework,a Cartesian product matrix is generated to determine the optimal values of the two important hyperparameters:batch size and learning rate.An extensive exercise consisting of 435 simulations for 11 state-of-the-art pre-trained DL models was performed using 16 paired hyperparameters from the Cartesian product matrix to input the model with the three most popular solvers(stochastic gradient descent with momentum(SGDM),adaptive moment estimation(ADAM),and root mean squared propagation(RMSProp)).The 16 pairs were formed using individual hyperparameter values taken from literature, which generally addressed only one hyperparameter for optimization, rather than making a grid for a particular range. The proposed framework was assessed using a multi-class publicly available dataset consisting of glioma, meningioma, and pituitary tumors.Performance assessment shows that ResNet18 outperforms all other models in terms of accuracy, precision, specificity, and recall(sensitivity). The results are also compared with existing state-of-the-art research work that used the same dataset. The comparison was mainly based on performance metric“accuracy”with support of three other parameters“precision,”“recall,”and“specificity.”The comparison shows that the transfer learning technique, implemented through our proposed framework for brain tumor classification, outperformed all existing approaches. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed framework is an efficient framework that helped reduce the computational complexity and the time to attain optimal values of two important hyperparameters and consequently the optimized model with an accuracy of 99.56%.Irfan Ahmed Usmani Muhammad Tahir Qadri Razia Zia Asif Aziz Farheen Saeed 2022Computers, Materials & Continua2022,,11:0
Sustainable Learning of Computer Programming Languages Using Mind Mapping显示文摘In the current era of information technology, students need to learn modern programming languages efficiently. The art of teaching/learning program-ming requires many logical and conceptual skills. So it’s a challenging task for the instructors/learners to teach/learn these programming languages effectively and efficiently.Mind mapping is a useful visual tool for establishing ideas and connecting them to solve problems. This research proposed an effective way to teach programming languages through visual tools. This experimental study uses a mind mapping tool to teach two programming environments:Text-based Programming and Blocks-based Programming. We performed the experiments with one hundred and sixty undergraduate students of two public sector universities in the Asia Pacific region.Four different instructional approaches, including block-based language(BBL),text-based languages(TBL),mind map with text-based language(MMTBL)and mind mapping with block-based(MMBBL)are used for this purpose. The results show that instructional approaches using a mind mapping tool to help students solve given tasks in their critical thinking are more effective than other instructional techniques.Shahla Gul Muhammad Asif Zubair Nawaz Muhammad Haris Aziz Shahzada Khurram Muhammad Qaiser Saleem Elturabi Osman Ahmed Habib Muhammad Shafiq Osama E.Sheta 2023Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing2023,,5:0
Zinc oxide nanoparticles accelerate the healing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)-infected wounds in rabbits显示文摘Objective:To synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles(ZnONPs)and evaluate their antibacterial and wound healing effects against wounds infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA).Methods:ZnONPs were prepared by sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD)analysis and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).A total of 18 rabbits were divided into three groups:the ZnONPs group, the gentamicin group and the control group.A wound of 3 cm^(2) was inflicted on each rabbit and contaminated with MRSA inoculum.Treatment was started from the fourth day post-surgery.Wound healing, microbiological analysis, and histopathological analysis were performed to assess the efficacy of ZnONPs ointment. Results:XRD analysis confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure of the ZnONPs with an average crystallite size of 29.23 nm.SEM revealed discoid-shaped ZnONPs with a rough surface and an average size of 48.36 nm.Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed the purity of ZnONPs.Moreover, the particle size ranged from 100-700 nm with a high agglomeration trend.Treatment with ZnONPs promoted MRSA-infected wound healing. In addition,ZnONPs showed a good antibacterial effect as evidenced by a dose-dependent increase in the zone of inhibition. Conclusions:ZnONPs accelerate the healing of MRSA-infected wounds. Therefore,it can be explored for the treatment of MRSA infection.Muhammad Asif Ayesha Safdar Chaudhry Ambreen Ashar Hamad Bin Rashid Muhammad Hassan Saleem Hassaan Bin Aslam Abdul Aziz 2023Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2023,13,11:0
