1Effective simulation of flexible lateral boundaries in two-and three-dimensional DEM simulations显示文摘Discrete element method (DEM) models to simulate laboratory element tests play an important role in advancing our understanding of the mechanics of granular material response, including bonded or cemented, particulate materials. Comparisons of the macro-scale response observed in a real physical test and a 'virtual' DEM-simulated test can calibrate or validate DEM models. The detailed, particle scale information provided in the DEM simulation can then be used to develop our understanding of the material behaviour. It is important to accurately model the physical test boundary conditions in these DEM simulations. This paper specifically considers triaxial tests as these tests are commonly used in soil mechanics. In a triaxial test, the test specimen of granular material is enclosed within a flexible latex membrane that allows the material to deform freely during testing, while maintaining a specified stress condition. Triaxial tests can only be realistically simulated in 3D DEM codes, however analogue, 2D, biaxial DEM simulations are also often considered as it is easier to visualize particle interactions in two dimensions. This paper describes algorithms to simulate the lateral boundary conditions imposed by the latex membrane used in physical triaxial tests in both 2D and 3D DEM simulations. The importance of carefully considering the lateral boundary conditions in DEM simulations is illustrated by considering a 2D biaxial test on a specimen of frictional unbonded disks and a 3D triaxial test on a bonded (cemented) specimen of spheres. 2Effect of sample size on the response of DEM samples with a realistic grading显示文摘This paper shows that for DEM simulations of triaxial tests using samples with a grading that is representative of a real soil,the sample size significantly influences the observed material response.Four DEM samples with identical initial states were produced:three cylindrical samples bounded by rigid walls and one bounded by a cubical periodic cell.When subjected to triaxial loading,the samples with rigid boundaries were more dilative,stiffer and reached a higher peak stress ratio than the sample enclosed by periodic boundaries.For the rigid-wall samples,dilatancy increased and stiffness decreased with increasing sample size.The periodic sample was effectively homogeneous.The void ratio increased and the contact density decreased close to the rigid walls.This heterogeneity reduced with increasing sample size.The positions of the critical state lines(CSLs) of the overall response in e-log p' space were sensitive to the sample size,although no difference was observed between their slopes.The critical states of the interior regions of the rigid-wall-bounded samples approached that of the homogeneous periodic sample with increasing sample size.The ultimate strength of the material at the critical state is independent of sample size.Xin Huang Kevin J.Hanley Catherine O'Sullivan Fiona C.Y.Kwok 2014Particuology2014,12,4:12
3Influence of heterogeneity on rock strength and stiffness using discrete element method and parallel bond model显示文摘The particulate discrete element method(DEM) can be employed to capture the response of rock,provided that appropriate bonding models are used to cement the particles to each other.Simulations of laboratory tests are important to establish the extent to which those models can capture realistic rock behaviors.Hitherto the focus in such comparison studies has either been on homogeneous specimens or use of two-dimensional(2D) models.In situ rock formations are often heterogeneous,thus exploring the ability of this type of models to capture heterogeneous material behavior is important to facilitate their use in design analysis.In situ stress states are basically three-dimensional(3D),and therefore it is important to develop 3D models for this purpose.This paper revisits an earlier experimental study on heterogeneous specimens,of which the relative proportions of weaker material(siltstone) and stronger,harder material(sandstone) were varied in a controlled manner.Using a 3D DEM model with the parallel bond model,virtual heterogeneous specimens were created.The overall responses in terms of variations in strength and stiffness with different percentages of weaker material(siltstone) were shown to agree with the experimental observations.There was also a good qualitative agreement in the failure patterns observed in the experiments and the simulations,suggesting that the DEM data enabled analysis of the initiation of localizations and micro fractures in the specimens.Spyridon Liakas Catherine O’Sullivan Charalampos Saroglou 2017Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2017,9,4:7

6Do probiotics have a therapeutic role in gastroenterology?显示文摘Several hundred species of bacteria inhabit the gut, and affect its cell biology, morphology and homeostasis. Many bacteria are however potential pathogens, especially if the integrity of the epithelial barrier is physically or functionally breached. Conversely, the interaction between host and commensal microbes can confer important health benefits. This has led to commercial and public interest in ’probiotics’, live microbes principally taken as food supplements. Might probiotics also be used in disease therapy? Experimental evidence that probiotics modulate gut physiology, particularly barrier integrity and immunological function, underpins exciting new gastroenterological research. 8Overview of recent advances in metastatic triple negative breast cancer显示文摘Metastatic triple negative breast cancer(TNBC)has an aggressive phenotype with a predilection for visceral organs and brain.Best responses to chemotherapy are predominately in the first line.Recent studies have demonstrated improved progression free survival with the combination of atezolizumab/pembrolizumab and chemotherapy in programmed death-ligand 1 positive metastatic TNBC.However,a recent trial in a similar population showed no benefit for atezolizumab and paclitaxel which led to a Food and Drug Administration alert.Two phase III trials(OLYMPIAD and BROCADE3)demonstrated a benefit in progression free survival(PFS)but not overall survival in patients with BRCAassociated metastatic TNBC treated with Olaparib or Talazoparib respectively.For those treated with Talazoparib,the time to deterioration in health related-quality of life was also longer compared to chemotherapy.The BROCADE3 trial demonstrated that the combination of a platinum and veliparib increased PFS in first-line metastatic TNBC but at the cost of increased toxicity.There are no headto-head comparisons of a poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose)polymerase inhibitors(PARPi)and platinums.There are unanswered questions regarding the role of PARPi maintenance after platinum therapy as is standard of care in BRCAassociated ovarian cancer.Other areas of therapeutic interest include targeting aberrations in the phosphoinositide 3-kinase pathway,protein kinase B,mammalian target of rapamycin or utilising antibody drug conjugates.This review focusses on recent and emerging therapeutic options in metastatic TNBC.We searched PubMed,clinicaltrials.gov and recent international meetings from American Society of Clinical Oncology,San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference and the European Society of Medical Oncology.David O'Reilly Maha Al Sendi Catherine M Kelly 2021World Journal of Clinical Oncology2021,12,3:5
9Assessing resources for implementing a community directed intervention (CDI) strategy in delivering multiple health interventions in urban poor communities in Southwestern Nigeria: a qualitative study显示文摘Background:Many simple,affordable and effective disease control measures have had limited impact due to poor access especially by the poorer populations(urban and rural)and inadequate community participation.A proven strategy to address the problem of access to health interventions is the Community Directed Interventions(CDI)approach,which has been used successfully in rural areas.This study was carried out to assess resources for the use of a CDI strategy in delivering health interventions in poorly-served urban communities in Ibadan,Nigeria.Methods:A formative study was carried out in eight urban poor communities in the Ibadan metropolis in the Oyo State.Qualitative methods comprising 12 focus group discussions(FGDs)with community members and 73 key informant interviews(KIIs)with community leaders,programme managers,community-based organisations(CBOs),non-government organisations(NGOs)and other stakeholders at federal,state and local government levels were used to collect data to determine prevalent diseases and healthcare delivery services,as well as to explore the potential resources for a CDI strategy.All interviews were audio recorded.Content analysis was used to analyse the data.Results:Malaria,upper respiratory tract infection,diarrhoea and measles were found to be prevalent in children,while hypertension and diabetes topped the list of diseases among adults.Healthcare was financed mainly by out-of-pocket expenses.Cost and location were identified as hindrances to utilisation of health facilities;informal cooperatives(esusu)were available to support those who could not pay for care.Immunisation,nutrition,reproductive health,tuberculosis(TB)and leprosy,environmental health,malaria and HIV/AIDs control programmes were the ongoing interventions.Delivery strategies included house-to-house,home-based treatment,health education and campaigns.Community participation in the planning,implementation and monitoring of development projects was reported as common practice.The resources available for these activities and which constitute potential resources for the CDI process include community volunteers,CBOs and NGOs.Others are landlords;professional,women and youth associations;social clubs,religious organisations and the available health facilities.Conclusion:This study’s findings support the feasibility of using the CDI process in delivering health interventions in urban poor communities and show that potential resources for the strategy abound in the communities.Ikeoluwapo O Ajayi Ayodele S Jegede Catherine O Falade Johannes Sommerfeld 2013Infectious Diseases of Poverty2013,2,1:4

11Characterization of artificial spherical particles for DEM validation studies显示文摘This paper describes a study in which advanced particle-scale characterization was carried out on spherical particles that can be used in experimental tests to validate discrete element method (DEM) simulations. Two types of particle, alkaline and borosilicate glass beads, made from two different materials, were considered. The particle shape, stiffness, contact friction properties and surface roughness were measured. The influences of hardness and roughness on the mechanical response of the particles were carefully considered. Compared to the alkaline beads, the borosilicate beads were more spherical and more uniform in size, and they exhibited mechanical characteristics closer to natural quartz sand. 14Discrete element modelling of the quasi-static uniaxial compression of individual infant formula agglomerates显示文摘Infant formula is usually produced in an agglomerated powder form. These agglomerates are subjected to many transient forces following their manufacture. These can be difficult to quantify experimentally because of their small magnitudes and short durations. Numerical models have the potential to address this gap in the experimental data. The objective of the research described here was to calibrate a discrete element model for these agglomerates using experimental data obtained for quasi-static loading, and to use this model to study the mechanics of the particle response in detail. The Taguchi method was previously proposed as a viable calibration approach for discrete element models. In this work, the method was assessed for calibration of the model parameters (e.g., bond stiffnesses and strengths) considering three responses: the force at failure, strain at failure and agglomerate stiffness. The Weibull moduli for the simulation results and the experimental data were almost identical following calibration and the 37% characteristic stresses were similar. An analysis of the energy terms in the model provided useful insight into the model response.
