| 1 | Water quality monitoring in a slightly-polluted inland water body through remote sensing-Case study of the Guanting Reservoir in Beijing,China显示文摘This study focused on the water quality of the Guanting Reservoir,a possible auxiliary drinking water source for Beijing.Through a remote sensing(RS)approach and using Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper(TM)data,water quality retrieval models were established and analyzed for eight common water quality variables,including algae content,turbidity,and concentrations of chemical oxygen demand,total nitrogen,ammonia nitrogen,nitrate nitrogen,total phosphorus,and dissolved phosphorus.The results show that there exists a statistically significant correlation between each water quality variable and remote sensing data in a slightly-polluted inland water body with fairly weak spectral radiation.With an appropriate method of sampling pixel digital numbers and multiple regression algorithms,retrieval of the algae content,turbidity,and nitrate nitrogen concentration was achieved within 10% mean relative error,concentrations of total nitrogen and dissolved phosphorus within 20%,and concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus within 30%.On the other hand,no effective retrieval method for chemical oxygen demand was found.These accuracies were acceptable for the practical application of routine monitoring and early warning on water quality safety with the support of precise traditional monitoring.The results show that performing the most traditional routine monitoring of water quality by RS in relatively clean inland water bodies is possible and effective. | Weiqi HE Shan CHEN Xuehua LIU Jining CHEN | 2008 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2008,2,2: | 10 |

| 5 | Lipid-lowering effects of oleanolic acid in hyperlipidemic patients显示文摘Oleanolic acid(OA) is a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound extracted from olea europaeal, a traditional Chinese medicine herb. OA has been used in the clinic as a hepatoprotective medicine in China since 1970 s. In our previous study, we observed that OA could ameliorate hyperlipidemia in animal models. In the present study, we conducted a small-scale clinical trial to evaluate the hypolipidemia effect of OA in hyperlipidemic patients. Hyperlipidemic patients were administrated with OA for four weeks(4 tablets once, three times a day). The blood samples of the patients were collected before and after OA treatment. The biological parameters were measured. Furthermore, three patients' blood samples were studied with DNA microarray. After OA administration, the TC, TG, and HDLC levels in serum decreased significantly. DNA microarray analysis results showed that the expressions of 21 m RNAs were significantly changed after OA treatment. Bioinformatics analysis showed 17 m RNAs were up-regulated and 4 m RNAs were down-regulated significantly after OA treatment. Five m RNAs(CACNA1 B, FCN, STEAP3, AMPH, and NR6 A1) were selected to validate the expression levels by q RT-PCR. Therefore, OA administration differentially regulated the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism. | 13 | Molecular mechanism of mureidomycin biosynthesis activated by introduction of an exogenous regulatory gene ssa A into Streptomyces roseosporus显示文摘Mureidomycins(MRDs), a group of unique uridyl-peptide antibiotics, exhibit antibacterial activity against the highly refractory pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Our previous study showed that the cryptic MRD biosynthetic gene cluster(BGC) mrd in Streptomyces roseosporus NRRL 15998 could not be activated by its endogenous regulator 02995 but activated by an exogenous activator Ssa A from sansanmycin’s BGC ssa of Streptomyces sp. strain SS. Here we report the molecular mechanism for this inexplicable regulation. EMSAs and footprinting experiments revealed that Ssa A could directly bind to a 14-nt palindrome sequence of 5′-CTGRCNNNNGTCAG-3′ within six promoter regions of mrd. Disruption of three representative target genes(SSGG-02981, SSGG-02987 and SSGG-02994) showed that the target genes directly controlled by Ssa Awere essential for MRD production. The regulatory function was further investigated by replacing six regions of SSGG-02995 with those of ssa A.Surprisingly, only the replacement of 343–450 nt fragment encoding the 115–150 amino acids(AA) of Ssa A could activate MRD biosynthesis.
