1Changes in Mean and Extreme Temperature and Precipitation over the Arid Region of Northwestern China: Observation and Projection显示文摘This paper reports a comprehensive study on the observed and projected spatiotemporal changes in mean and extreme climate over the arid region of northwestern China, based on gridded observation data and CMIP5 simulations under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The observational results reveal an increase in annual mean temperature since 1961, largely attributable to the increase in minimum temperature. The annual mean precipitation also exhibits a significant increasing tendency. The precipitation amount in the most recent decade was greater than in any preceding decade since 1961. Seasonally,the greatest increase in temperature and precipitation appears in winter and in summer, respectively. Widespread significant changes in temperature-related extremes are consistent with warming, with decreases in cold extremes and increases in warm extremes. The warming of the coldest night is greater than that of the warmest day, and changes in cold and warm nights are more evident than for cold and warm days. Extreme precipitation and wet days exhibit an increasing trend, and the maximum number of consecutive dry days shows a tendency toward shorter duration. Multi-model ensemble mean projections indicate an overall continual increase in temperature and precipitation during the 21 st century. 2CMIP6 Evaluation and Projection of Temperature and Precipitation over China显示文摘This article evaluates the performance of 20 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6(CMIP6)models in simulating temperature and precipitation over China through comparisons with gridded observation data for the period of 1995–2014,with a focus on spatial patterns and interannual variability.The evaluations show that the CMIP6 models perform well in reproducing the climatological spatial distribution of temperature and precipitation,with better performance for temperature than for precipitation.Their interannual variability can also be reasonably captured by most models,however,poor performance is noted regarding the interannual variability of winter precipitation.Based on the comprehensive performance for the above two factors,the“highest-ranked”models are selected as an ensemble(BMME).The BMME outperforms the ensemble of all models(AMME)in simulating annual and winter temperature and precipitation,particularly for those subregions with complex terrain but it shows little improvement for summer temperature and precipitation.The AMME and BMME projections indicate annual increases for both temperature and precipitation across China by the end of the 21st century,with larger increases under the scenario of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5/Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5(SSP585)than under scenario of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 2/Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5(SSP245).The greatest increases of annual temperature are projected for higher latitudes and higher elevations and the largest percentage-based increases in annual precipitation are projected to occur in northern and western China,especially under SSP585.However,the BMME,which generally performs better in these regions,projects lower changes in annual temperature and larger variations in annual precipitation when compared to the AMME projections.Xiaoling YANG Botao ZHOU Ying XU Zhenyu HAN 2021Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2021,38,5:21
3Assessment of Indices of Temperature Extremes Simulated by Multiple CMIP5 Models over China显示文摘Given that climate extremes in China might have serious regional and global consequences, an increasing number of studies are examining temperature extremes in China using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5(CMIP5)models. This paper investigates recent changes in temperature extremes in China using 25 state-of-the-art global climate models participating in CMIP5. Thirteen indices that represent extreme temperature events were chosen and derived by daily maximum and minimum temperatures, including those representing the intensity(absolute indices and threshold indices),duration(duration indices), and frequency(percentile indices) of extreme temperature. The overall performance of each model is summarized by a 'portrait' diagram based on relative root-mean-square error, which is the RMSE relative to the median RMSE of all models, revealing the multi-model ensemble simulation to be better than individual model for most indices. Compared with observations, the models are able to capture the main features of the spatial distribution of extreme temperature during 1986–2005. Overall, the CMIP5 models are able to depict the observed indices well, and the spatial structure of the ensemble result is better for threshold indices than frequency indices. The spread amongst the CMIP5 models in different subregions for intensity indices is small and the median CMIP5 is close to observations; however, for the duration and frequency indices there can be wide disagreement regarding the change between models and observations in some regions.The model ensemble also performs well in reproducing the observational trend of temperature extremes. 4Inverse correlation between ancient winter and summer monsoons in East Asia?显示文摘There is a scientific debate on the relationship between ancient winter and summer monsoons in East Asia.Some scholars think that East Asian winter and summer monsoons are anti-correlated,and others think not.For this reason,this study is motivated to assess their linkage from the paleoclimate simulation perspective,through analyzing the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM) and mid-Holocene(MH) climate simulated by CCSM3 model.Compared to the present climate,the Aleutian low is found to be deepened and the East Asian winter monsoon(EAWM) is stronger during the LGM winter.The Pacific high in summer is noticed to be weakened and the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) is weaker at the LGM.During the MH,the Aleutian low and the Asian high in winter are intensified,and the Asian low and the Pacific high in summer are enhanced,indicating that the EAWM and EASM are both stronger than today.Therefore,the EAWM is not always negatively correlated to the EASM.Their relationship may be different at different geological stages.It can be obtained at least from the numerical simulation results that the EAWM and the EASM is negatively correlated during the cooling period,while positively correlated during the warming period.ZHOU BoTao ZHAO Ping 2009Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,20:15
5Linkage between winter sea surface temperature east of Australia and summer precipitation in the Yangtze River valley and a possible physical mechanism显示文摘The relationship between winter sea surface temperature (SST) east of Australia and summer precipitation in the Yangtze River valley and a possibly related physical mechanism were investigated using observation data.It is found that winter SST east of Australia is correlated positively to summer precipitation in the Yangtze River valley.When the SST east of Australia becomes warmer in winter,the western Pacific subtropical high and the East Asian westerly jet tend to shift southward the following summer,concurrent with low-level southwesterly anomalies over eastern China.These conditions favor precipitation increase in the Yangtze River valley,whereas the opposite conditions favor precipitation decrease.The influence of winter SST east of Australia on East Asian summer atmospheric circulations may occur in two ways.First,by an anomalous SST signal east of Australia in winter that persists through the following summer,thus affecting East Asian atmospheric circulations via the inter-hemispheric teleconnection.Second,when the SST east of Australia is warmer in winter,higher SST appears simultaneously in the southwest Indian Ocean and subsequently develops eastward by local air-sea interaction.As a result,the SST in the Maritime Continent increases in summer,which may lead to an anomalous change in East Asian summer atmospheric circulations through its impact on convection.ZHOU BoTao 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,17:12
6Interdecadal change of the linkage between the North Atlantic Oscillation and the tropical cyclone frequency over the western North Pacific显示文摘The relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO) and the tropical cyclone frequency over the western North Pacific(WNPTCF) in summer is investigated by use of observation data. It is found that their linkage appears to have an interdecadal change from weak connection to strong connection. During the period of 1948–1977, the NAO was insignificantly correlated to the WNPTCF. However, during the period of 1980–2009, they were significantly correlated with stronger(weaker) NAO corresponding to more(fewer) tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific. The possible reason for such a different relationship between the NAO and the WNPTCF during the former and latter periods is further analyzed from the perspective of large-scale atmospheric circulations. When the NAO was stronger than normal in the latter period, an anomalous cyclonic circulation prevailed in the lower troposphere of the western North Pacific and the monsoon trough was intensified, concurrent with the eastward-shifting western Pacific subtropical high as well as anomalous low-level convergence and high-level divergence over the western North Pacific. These conditions favor the genesis and development of tropical cyclones, and thus more tropical cyclones appeared over the western North Pacific. In contrast, in the former period, the impact of the NAO on the aforementioned atmospheric circulations became insignificant, thereby weakening its linkage to the WNPTCF. 8Projected Changes in Temperature and Precipitation Extremes over China as Measured by 50-yr Return Values and Periods Based on a CMIP5 Ensemble显示文摘Future changes in the 50-yr return level for temperature and precipitation extremes over China's Mainland are investigated based on a CMIP5 multi-model ensemble for RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The following indices are analyzed:TXx and TNn(the annual maximum and minimum of daily maximum and minimum surface temperature), RX5 day(the annual maximum consecutive 5-day precipitation) and CDD(maximum annual number of consecutive dry days). After first validating the model performance, future changes in the 50-yr return values and return periods for these indices are investigated along with the inter-model spread. Multi-model median changes show an increase in the 50-yr return values of TXx and a decrease for TNn, more specifically, by the end of the 21 st century under RCP8.5, the present day 50-yr return period of warm events is reduced to 1.2 yr, while extreme cold events over the country are projected to essentially disappear.A general increase in RX5 day 50-yr return values is found in the future. By the end of the 21 st century under RCP8.5, events of the present RX5 day 50-yr return period are projected to reduce to < 10 yr over most of China. Changes in CDD-50 show a dipole pattern over China, with a decrease in the values and longer return periods in the north, and vice versa in the south. 9Interdecadal change of the connection between winter North Pacific Oscillation and summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley显示文摘The relationship between the winter North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and the following summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley before and after the mid-1970s is investigated by using the Chinese 160-station precipitation data and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data from 1951 to 2008.It is found that their linkage appears to have an apparent interdecadal variation.Before the mid-1970s, there was a prominent out-of-phase relationship between the winter NPO and the summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley.However, such a relationship is significantly weakened afterwards.The change of atmospheric circulations related to the winter NPO before and after the mid-1970s is further addressed.Before the mid-1970s, a strong (weak) winter NPO was followed by the summer situations with anomalous low-level cyclonic (anticyclonic) circulation over the western Pacific and descending (ascending) over the Huaihe River valley.Meanwhile, the water vapor transporting to the Huaihe River valley was reduced (enhanced).These conditions are unfavorable (favorable) for the precipitation occurring in the Huaihe River valley, and thus the local precipitation was decreased (increased).After the mid-1970s, however, the impact of winter NPO on the summer atmospheric circulation system associated with the rainfall in the Huaihe River valley becomes diluted, thereby weakening its linkage to the summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley.ZHOU BoTao XIA DongDong 2012Science China Earth Sciences2012,55,12:5

11Linkage between the Asian-Pacific Oscillation and the sea surface temperature in the North Pacific显示文摘The linkage between the Asian-Pacific Oscillation (APO) and the sea surface temperature (SST) in the North Pacific during the summertime (June-August) is preliminarily investigated through an analysis of observed data.It is found that APO is significantly and positively correlated to the North Pacific SST,with the correlation coefficient being 0.58 on the interannual timescale during the period 1954-2003,which suggests that a strong (weak) APO corresponds to high (low) SST in the North Pacific.Their in-phase relationship is well supported by the dynamic and thermal conditions in association with the APO anomaly.When APO is in the positive phase,the East Asian westerly jet in the upper troposphere is weakened,and the anomalous anticyclonic circulation prevails in the low-troposphere over the North Pacific.Besides,the negative anomaly of the sensible and latent heat fluxes is predominated in the North Pacific,indicating ocean gets heat flux from the atmosphere.Meanwhile,warm water advection northward is strengthened in the North Pacific.All of these provide beneficial conditions to warm the North Pacific SST,and thus the SST is increased in this region,and vice versa.ZHOU BoTao ZHAO Ping CUI Xuan 2010Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,12:2
12Comparison of Snowfall Variations over China Identified from Different Snowfall/Rainfall Discrimination Methods显示文摘Based on the snowfall observations at 836 surface weather stations in China and the Daily Surface Climate Variables of China version 3.0 dataset for 1961–2013, capability of five methods with different objective criteria for identifying wintertime snowfall is evaluated, to provide reference for application of these methods in snowfall/rainfall discrimination. Methods Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ, and Ⅴuse the daily average surface air temperature(Ta), wet-bulb temperature(Tw), dynamic threshold Tw, 0-cm ground temperature, and 700–850-hPa thickness, respectively, to identify the snowfall. The results show that the climatological distribution of snowfall can be well produced by Methods Ⅰ, Ⅱ, and Ⅲ. Method Ⅳ underestimates the snowfall days in eastern Tibetan Plateau(ETP), and Method Ⅴ cannot yield the actual large numbers of snowfall days and amounts. Accordingly, the linear trends of snowfall days estimated from Methods Ⅰ, Ⅱ, and Ⅲ largely agree with the observations, while a discrepancy is found in the linear trend of snowfall amounts over southeastern China(SEC). For interannual and decadal variations of snowfall, Method Ⅴ shows the worst performance. It is more reasonable to use Tw to distinguish snowfall from rainfall instead of Ta, 0-cm ground temperature, and 700–850-hPa thickness;and the reference thresholds of Tw in northeastern China(NEC), northwestern China(NWC), ETP, and SEC are-1.5,-1.5,-0.4, and-0.3°C, respectively. 13Influences of the 11-yr Sunspot Cycle and Polar Vortex Oscillation on Observed Winter Temperature Variations in China显示文摘Using the NCEP-2 reanalysis data in 1979-2015, we analyze variations in the coupled stratosphere-troposphere system and attribute them to the polar vortex oscillation(PVO) and the 11-yr sunspot cycle(SC). Subsequently, influences of PVO and SC on the near-ground temperature and extreme temperatures are diagnosed based on observations at 2419 surface stations in China over the same period. Empirical Orthogonal Function(EOF) analysis of geopotential height(GH) anomalies indicates that the first and second EOF modes together can explain nearly 50% of the total variance and they have different driving sources, active periods, and regions. The first EOF mode mainly represents variation characteristics of the polar vortex, and its active periods appear in late winter. It is found that a weakened polar vortex(larger amplitude in the positive time series of the first mode) corresponds to lower daily mean, minimum, and maximum temperatures and more frequent cold nights and days. This cooling effect mainly occur in northeastern China. The second EOF mode is closely related to the SC, and its major active periods are late autumn and early winter. The results reveal that strong solar activity(larger amplitude in the positive time series of the second mode) leads to cooling effects in northern China through accelerating seasonal transformation of the stratospheric circulation and enhancing intensity of the subtropical westerly jet in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. The near-ground temperature is lower than usual, especially for daily mean and minimum temperatures. The number of warm nights and days is significantly reduced, and cold nights and days become more frequent. 16Enhanced stability of Pt/Al_(2)O_(3) modified by Zn promoter for catalytic dehydrogenation of ethane显示文摘Catalytic ethane dehydrogenation(EDH) to ethylene over Pt-based catalysts has received increasing interests in recent years as it is a potential alternative route to conventional steam cracking. However, the catalysts used in this reaction often suffer from rapid deactivation due to serious coke deposition and metal sintering. Herein, we reported the effects of Zn modification on the stability of Pt/Al2 O3 for EDH.The Zn-modified sample(PtZn2/Al2 O3) exhibits stable ethane conversion(20%) with over 95% ethylene selectivity. More importantly, it exhibits a significantly low deactivation rate of only 0.003 h-1 at 600 °C for70 h, which surpasses most of previously reported catalysts. Detailed characterizations including in situ FT-IR, ethylene adsorption microcalorimetry, and HAADF-STEM etc. reveal that Zn modifier reduces the number of Lewis acid sites on the catalyst surface. Moreover, it could modify Pt sites and preferentially cover the step sites, which decrease surface energy and retard the sintering of Pt particle, then prohibiting the further dehydrogenation of ethylene to ethylidyne. 18CMIP5 Simulated Change in the Intensity of the Hadley and Walker Circulations from the Perspective of Velocity Potential显示文摘Based on the simulations of 31 global models in CMIP5, the performance of the models in simulating the Hadley and Walker circulations is evaluated. In addition, their change in intensity by the end of the 21 st century(2080–2099) under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, relative to 1986–2005, is analyzed from the perspective of 200 h Pa velocity potential.Validation shows good performance of the individual CMIP5 models and the multi-model ensemble mean(MME) in reproducing the meridional(zonal) structure and magnitude of Hadley(Walker) circulation. The MME can also capture the observed strengthening tendency of the winter Hadley circulation and weakening tendency of the Walker circulation. Such secular trends can be simulated by 39% and 74% of the models, respectively. The MME projection indicates that the winter Hadley circulation and the Walker circulation will weaken under both scenarios by the end of the 21 st century. The weakening amplitude is larger under RCP8.5 than RCP4.5, due to stronger external forcing. The majority of the CMIP5 models show the same projection as the MME. However, for the summer Hadley circulation, the MME shows little change under RCP4.5 and large intermodel spread is apparent. Around half of the models project an increase, and the other half project a decrease. 20DNA methylation affects photoperiodic tuberization in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) by mediating the expression of genes related to the photoperiod and GA pathways显示文摘Overcoming short-day-dependent tuberization to adapt to long-day conditions is critical for the widespread geographical success of potato.The genetic pathways of photoperiodic tuberization are similar to those of photoperiodic flowering.DNA methylation plays an important role in photoperiodic flowering.However,little is known about how DNA methylation affects photoperiodic tuberization in potato.Here,we verified the effect of a DNA methylation inhibitor on photoperiodic tuberization and compared the DNA methylation levels and differentially methylated genes(DMGs)in the photoperiodic tuberization process between photoperiod-sensitive and photoperiod-insensitive genotypes,aiming to dissect the role of DNA methylation in the photoperiodic tuberization of potato.We found that a DNA methylation inhibitor could promote tuber initiation in strict short-day genotypes.Whole-genome DNA methylation sequencing showed that the photoperiod-sensitive and photoperiod-insensitive genotypes had distinct DNA methylation modes in which few differentially methylated genes were shared.Transcriptome analysis confirmed that the DNA methylation inhibitor regulated the expression of the key genes involved in the photoperiod and GA pathways to promote tuber initiation in the photoperiod-sensitive genotype.Comparison of the DNA methylation levels and transcriptome levels identified 52 candidate genes regulated by DNA methylation that were predicted to be involved in photoperiodic tuberization.Our findings provide a new perspective for understanding the relationship between photoperiod-dependent and GA-regulated tuberization.Uncovering the epigenomic signatures of these pathways will greatly enhance potato breeding for adaptation to a wide range of environments.Yanjun Ai Shenglin Jing Zhengnan Cheng Botao Song Conghua Xie Jun Liu Jun Zhou 2021Horticulture Research2021,8,1:1
